Roblox morning briefing — October 9, 2026: Build scores 98 for code and 31 for fun, the licence catalogue opens to avatar items, and He-Man arrives to nine players

Three developments for October 9: Roblox published its own scorecard for its AI game maker and the fun score is 31, the licensing catalogue opened to avatar items with a revenue graphic Roblox had to correct, and a Mattel franchise landed on the platform to nine players.

Roblox's newsroom published its first post since 2 October on Thursday afternoon, and its announcements board added three creator releases between 20:20 and 22:45 that night. The platform's own social accounts said nothing all day, so this morning's briefing is built from the newsroom, the Developer Forum and a game page.
Three things matter today: Roblox graded its own AI game maker and published the 31, the licensing catalogue opened to avatar items, and a Mattel franchise arrived on the platform to nine players.

Roblox graded its own AI game maker, and published the 31

Roblox's newsroom published "How Roblox Evaluates Build Game Creation" on Thursday afternoon, its first post there since 2 October 1. Build is the mobile-first tool that turns a written prompt into a game and publishes it straight to players. Roblox says more than 100,000 people have used it since the alpha launch in New Zealand, and that they have published roughly 9,000 games. Of the thousands who tried it, 71% had never opened Roblox Studio before. Those figures run through 1 September.
The counts are not the interesting part. Roblox measures a Build game on four separate signals — the specification it writes from the prompt, the quality of the place file that comes out of it, whether the game can actually be played start to finish, and how it looks and sounds — and it refuses to average them into one score.
The post walks a single prompt all the way through: "A true 3D obby game, with a start platform, moving hazards, checkpoints, and finish line." Build turned that into a game called Skyforge Ascent. The specification scored 91/100. The engineering lens, reading the place file in Studio without playing it, scored 98/100 and found only two unused helper functions to complain about. The visual score, measured on a phone-sized viewport, was 86/100. The playtest passed all nine items on its plan with no runtime errors at all, a perfect 100. The design lens, reading the same file, scored 31/100 — zero on progression, zero on replayability, zero on player agency and zero on original hook.
A two-column rubric table headed Generic Static Rubric 98.0/100 A beside Static Content Quality 31.5/100 F, the left column of checks all green at 100.0 and the right column mostly red at 0.0 for agency, progression, replayability and original hook
Roblox's own evaluation output for the obby it generated from one prompt. The code passes nearly every check; four content rows score nothing at all.Roblox Newsroom, published 8 October 2026.
"Code quality and content quality are fundamentally different dimensions," the post says, "and a build can be near-perfect on one while failing the other. A single blended quality score would have averaged these into something meaningless." A high specification score, it adds, "only proves that the document is build-ready."
Roblox also publishes how Build has moved. Since the New Zealand alpha, creator satisfaction is up 10% and unintended outputs — a game that is not the one that was asked for — are down from 18% to 3%. About 14% of prompted sessions and 19% of playtests reach publication. Those last numbers are dated 29 August, so they describe where the tool stood six weeks ago rather than this week.
The internal benchmarks are the most quotable thing in the post. Upgrading Build's base model moved playtest scores up 7.6 points, visual finish up 9.0 and content up 5.2. Splitting the work between a heavy model and a lightweight one — a dual-agent setup that preserved content variety — cost 11.2 points of playability and 13.2 points of visual finish. Across Roblox's own prompt suites, the current 3D test set playtests worse than the early 2D set, 51.5 against 75.9, and scores better on content, 33.9 against 19.2.
The post lands the day after Google opened Playground, its own prompt-to-game platform, and the day after Roblox's shares fell as much as 8% in pre-market trading on that launch, with Unity down 1.6% and Alphabet up 2. Roblox's answer to the question the drop was about — whether its tool makes games worth playing — is a report card with a 31 on it, published on purpose, next to the explanation of why the 98 does not rescue it.
The Shorts angle: the chart is the video. Cut from the 98.0 on the left to the 31.5 on the right, then read the four rows underneath that scored 0.0 — agency, progression, replayability, original hook. Roblox published the graphic that makes the clip.

The licensing catalogue now sells IP as avatar items

The Developer Forum announcement went up on Thursday night 3. The Licensing catalogue, which until now covered things made inside games, now issues Marketplace licences for approved IP, and the categories a licence covers are body items, clothing, accessories, animations and makeup.
A creator applies through the Creator Hub's Licences page, finds an IP that offers a Marketplace licence, reviews the licence terms, and submits a pitch explaining what they plan to do with it. The rights holder decides whether to offer this licence type at all, reviews every request against its own content standards and brand guidelines, and can refuse. The rights holder also sets the revenue share, and the rate is shown in the licence terms before the creator applies. Roblox splits each sale automatically, and the share applies to resales too.

The new licence selector sits under Item Attributes on an avatar item's configure page, next to a field that reads the rate back to the seller. Roblox Developer Forum, published 8 October 2026.
The limits are worth knowing before anyone applies. One licence covers up to 100 items for now. An item can carry one IP licence at a time. Selling licensed items inside a game does not need a separate game licence. If a licence expires or is terminated, the items come off sale, and players keep what they already bought unless the item is separately moderated.
Then the post tripped over its own revenue graphic. The screenshot showed a Marketplace sale splitting 6% to the rights holder, 24% to the creator and 70% to Roblox, and an in-experience sale as 6% to the rights holder, 24% to the creator, 40% to the experience and 30% to Roblox. In the replies, the co-owner of the catalogue game My Avatar wrote that the table implied a game's own developers would pay the IP fee while the UGC creator earned the same amount, and that it showed the creator and the item creator earning 70% when in fact the item creator earns 30% and the seller 40% 3. A member of Roblox staff replied: "Thank you, this image has an error and we will replace it shortly. To confirm, the affiliate share mechanics are not changing, it will still be 40%."
Two answers in the same thread matter for anyone already making items. Roblox confirmed that a Roblox developer can license their own game's IP today through the same manager, which would give games like 99 Nights in the Forest a route to control merchandise modelled on them; the company says it needs evidence of IP ownership for now and plans to make that easier. A creator who asked whether anything would change about unlicensed uploads and DMCA enforcement did not get a reply. Roblox says licensed asset packs are coming later this year, and that it is exploring access-controlled images, models, meshes and music for licensed creators.
The Shorts angle: show the graphic, then show the reply from Roblox saying it is wrong and the affiliate share stays at 40%. A company correcting its own revenue maths in public is the whole clip, and 40% is the number a creator will still remember tomorrow.

He-Man landed on Roblox, and nine people are playing

"Masters of the Universe: Battle for Grayskull" is available worldwide on Roblox, Mattel Game Studios announced together with the developer Twin Atlas 4. It is a faction-based action RPG: the player picks He-Man and the Heroic Warriors or Skeletor and the Evil Warriors, then fights for control of Castle Grayskull, questing through Snake Mountain and Subternia, unlocking abilities on a skill tree, levelling and collecting loot. The licensing trade press carried it on Wednesday and the entertainment press followed on Thursday night 5.
Sean Thompson, a vice president at Mattel Game Studios, framed it as more than a port. "Our goal wasn't simply to bring Masters of the Universe to Roblox — it was to build an experience that belongs there," he said, "while staying true to the characters, world and action that have made the franchise a fan favorite for generations" 4.
On the platform, the game is not there yet. Roblox's own page for it showed nine people playing this morning, 102,306 visits and 898 favourites since the experience was created in May, with 205 likes against 90 dislikes 6. Total Drama Island, another licensed television game and itself only in open beta, had 74 people in it at the same moment 7.

The launch artwork, cut to the platform's own proportions: Roblox avatars in He-Man's world rather than screenshots from it.License Global, published 7 October 2026.
That gap is the useful thing here. In the same week, Roblox handed its own creators a way to make a living from licensed IP, and a company that owns one of the largest toy and film franchises in the world published straight onto the platform — and the two halves of that strategy are running at very different speeds. An announcement can be quoted; a player counter cannot be argued with.
The Shorts angle: hold the launch art, then cut to the game page and the counter under it. If the numbers move in a week, the same two frames make the sequel.

Top Fall Games to Watch

  • Duck Duck's Halloween Event — tonight, Friday 9 October, 22:30 CEST. The game's own events rail dates it for 20:30 UTC and the game was holding 7,925 players this morning on 22.6 million visits and 153,386 favourites 8. It is one of the two places the free Roblox-made Duck-o-Lantern is earned, through quests here and in Family Zone, before 8 November. Pitch: a free Roblox-made item with a short quest line, walked through inside sixty seconds and posted before the event closes.
  • Adopt Me!'s Halloween Week 2 — tonight, Friday 9 October, 17:05 CEST. The events rail lists "ADOPT ME NEW UPDATE! Halloween Week 2" at 15:05 UTC, then "ADOPT ME ADMIN ABUSE! Freebies & Chaos!" on Saturday at 16:00 UTC, then "ADOPT ME 2D TUESDAY! 2X Bucks & XP!" on Tuesday at 23:00 UTC. Adopt Me! was holding 140,607 players this morning 9. Pitch: the Halloween calendar, one slide per game, with the freebies round-up as the hook.
  • BOMBANANA!'s next big update — Saturday 10 October, 19:30 CEST. The game page carries a "NEW BIG UPDATE!" set for 17:30 UTC 10. It sits on 17,635,177 visits and 86,823 favourites, up from 16,831,219 and 83,378 on Wednesday morning. Pitch: a Steam co-op hit that found a second life on Roblox, told through the visit count.
  • Dress to Impress: HALLOWEEN! — Saturday 10 October. The platform's events page lists the event for the game's Halloween and fall season 11. The game had 30,325 players this morning. Pitch: the pieces players will be hunting in the first hour, filmed as a shopping list.
  • Total Drama Island — full release Thursday 15 October. The official game from the show's maker Fresh TV is still in open beta under the TotalDramaGames group, on 157,932 visits and 2,268 favourites 7. Pitch: a television franchise going straight at Roblox's party-game audience, with the beta's small numbers as the before shot.
  • Animal Hospital's Halloween update — Saturday 17 October. The game was holding 24,870 players this morning on 2.4 billion visits 12. Pitch: the update where a studio's promise to stop using AI art gets tested in public, a fortnight after its artist walked out.
  • FischFright 3 — Saturday 17 October. Fisch's annual limited Halloween event returns for a third year 13. Pitch: two Halloween updates land on the same day, and only one of them carries a controversy.

Also worth knowing

Roblox will report its third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday 29 October, after the market close, with a conference call the same afternoon 14. It is the first hard date on the calendar since the Google and Unity launch moved the shares.
Two more creator releases landed with the licensing announcement. State Machines and Luau Expressions are in Studio beta for the Animation Graph Editor, so a character's animation states and the transitions between them can be laid out in the graph instead of tracked in a Luau script 15. Automatic translation is now available for the text-to-speech API: the AudioTextToSpeech instance carries an AutoLocalize property, on by default, that detects the language of the input text, compares it with each player's language setting, and generates the speech in the player's own language through a matching preset voice. It covers 11 of the platform's 17 languages for now, and audio assets made through TTS are not included yet 16.
Where the big games stand this morning. At 08:15 CEST Steal An Egg led the platform at 1,352,356 concurrent players, ahead of Brookhaven at 223,510, 99 Nights in the Forest at 169,543, Adopt Me! at 140,607 and Blox Fruits at 139,713. Fisch held 55,657, Dress to Impress 30,325 and Animal Hospital 24,870 17.
Roblox In Real Life runs at Samsung KX in King's Cross, London, this weekend — Saturday 10 October from 11am to 7pm and Sunday 11 October from 11am to 5pm, free entry and no booking, with zones for Duck Duck, Pixel Quest and Warden and a 25% off in-game purchase voucher for the first 5,000 visitors 18. The same weekend opens Duck Duck's Halloween event.
