The Stone Keeps No Count of Years

0:00 / 2:59
A wide river runs below a high bank, and at the lip of the bluff, in the dry grass, one stone stands in the shape of a person. Nobody set it there. It has no face and no name cut into it, and it faces out across the water the way someone would who had climbed up here to watch the far road.
The stone is 望夫石, the wife-watching stone, and the earliest record of it is four lines in 《幽明錄》, the fifth-century collection of strange reports 1:
武昌陽新縣北山上有望夫石,狀若人立。相傳:昔有貞婦,其夫從役,遠赴國難,婦攜弱子,餞送此山,立望夫而化為立石,因以為名焉。
The note reads like a land survey with a story caught inside it. On the north hill of Yangxin county there is a stone that stands like a person, it says; a woman walked her husband as far as this hill before he left for the wars, and she stood here watching until she was standing stone, and that is where the name comes from. The name then travels. The same figure stands on a hill above Sha Tin in Hong Kong — a granite outcrop some fifteen metres tall that reads as a mother with a child on her back — and again near 羚羊峽 in 肇慶, and again in the hills north of 連州 2. Whoever moves away, the landscape keeps a woman looking at the far bank.
The best-known poem on the subject is 王建's, and it is short enough to hold in one breath 3:
望夫處,江悠悠。 化為石,不回頭。 山頭日日風復雨, 行人歸來石應語。
The first line puts the watching-place and the water in one clause: 江悠悠, the river going on and on. The second cuts a whole life down to a single direction — turned to stone, and not once turning her head. The third is only weather, day after day. The fourth is the line this song is built on. 石應語: if the traveller ever came back, the stone would have to speak.
劉禹錫 came to the same stone much later and found something stranger in it: 終日望夫夫不歸,化為孤石苦相思。 4. Thousands of years have gone by on that cliff, and the stone looks exactly as it did in the first moment it began to look. Waiting has no length from the inside. That is the chorus of this song:
望來幾千載 還似初望時 石不記年月 人自數歸期
The stone keeps no count of the years; everyone who passes keeps a count of the days. 李白's version supplies the two details that date her better than she dates herself — 露如今日淚,苔似昔年衣 5. The dew on the stone is always today's tears, and the moss on it is last year's clothes. The weather keeps the stone current instead of letting it date.
The song takes the silence seriously. If the stone ever spoke, her husband had come home; a thousand years without one word out of it means nobody ever came. 石不曾言語,人自作言語 — the stone never said anything, and people have been talking ever since. What the song will not do is read the figure as a memorial. Nobody raised it to remember her, and it is not there to be admired; it is a woman doing the one thing she could still do. The verses stay close to the stone and its small facts: no writing on it, no brows and no mouth, so the only way to know what it is looking at is to stand where it stands and look. The bridge holds the two of them side by side to the end — 我看江,石看江 — I look at the river, the stone looks at the river, and it is the same first look in both cases, because neither counts the years.
The colour under all of this is the 揚琴, the hammered dulcimer whose light bamboo beaters strike the strings and leave each note ringing once before it dies away. Its strokes fall like a slow count of days, which is the whole subject. Sparse guqin holds the verses, a low xiao answers in the bridge where the counting happens, faint pipa harmonics sit behind the later phrases, and no drum enters anywhere. The first chorus stays close in; the last one opens out; the outro thins to a struck string and one breath of xiao.
Play it at the end of an afternoon when you are standing at the edge of something and watching for a person who may not come — or on a day when the waiting has gone on so long that you have stopped being able to say how long it has been. The lyrics panel runs with the audio if you want to read along.
