September 2026 streaming rotation: Netflix is the anchor; Prime Video is optional

A math-backed September rotation plan keeps Netflix as the anchor, adds only one targeted service, and uses trials, pauses, and verified bundles to stay under $35 a month.

The September call: run Netflix, add one targeted service, and stop there

September is a good month to rotate, not to collect. The cleanest plan for a household trying to stay under $35 is Netflix with ads plus one of Apple TV+, Paramount+, or Prime Video. If you already pay for Amazon Prime, Prime Video is effectively a $0 streaming add-on; if you do not, use it only for the month of Neagley and the one-sitting binge it enables.
My default September stack is:
  • Keep or reactivate Netflix Standard with ads: $8.99/month. It has the strongest September runway, not just one premiere.
  • Take Apple TV+ for the seven-day trial, or pay for one month at $12.99 if you need more time. Mayday arrives September 4, and Women in Blue season two continues weekly through September 30.
  • Add Paramount+ Essential at $8.99 only if the household will watch Clash of the Thundermans. Otherwise, skip it.
That three-service version is $8.99 + $12.99 + $8.99 = $30.97/month before tax. It is under the channel's $35 ceiling, uses no password sharing, and gives each dollar a specific watchlist job. If Apple TV+'s seven-day trial is enough, the first-month charge can be just $17.98 for Netflix and Paramount+, provided you cancel Apple before the trial ends. Set the cancellation reminder when you start the trial; do not rely on memory.

The September release calendar that actually changes the rotation

These are the releases worth making a billing decision around. Dates below are based on official release announcements, not search-result dates.
DateAnchorServiceWhat it means for the bill
Sept. 3The Gentlemen season 2NetflixA returning series gives Netflix an early-month reason to stay active. 1
Sept. 3Clash of the ThundermansParamount+A feature-length family/superhero event; a good one-month activation, not a permanent subscription. 2
Sept. 4MaydayApple TV+A film gives trial users a defined weekend target. 3
Sept. 9 and 16Drawn Together and NeagleyPrime VideoTwo separate September reasons: a new adaptation on Sept. 9, then all eight Neagley episodes on Sept. 16. 4 5
Sept. 24-25A Different World sequel and Steel Ball Run: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 2nd StageNetflixNetflix has both a late-month sequel-series event and a weekly anime launch, so it is the only service with a sustained September calendar. 6 7
Apple TV+'s Women in Blue season two is the supporting release rather than the main activation trigger: it premiered August 12 and releases weekly through September 30. 8
The practical takeaway is timing. Start Netflix by September 3 if The Gentlemen is your reason to return. Start Apple TV+ on September 4, or a day before you want to watch Mayday. Start Paramount+ only when the family movie is useful. Start Prime Video by September 16 if Neagley is the actual target; the September 9 title can move that date forward for the right household.
Before making any change, write down each service's next billing date and whether the charge comes from the service, Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, or a phone carrier. Canceling in the wrong account often leaves the subscription running. For a trial, set the reminder for 48 hours before renewal. For a monthly service, cancel immediately after the final planned episode if the platform keeps access through the paid period. The goal is not to cancel early and lose viewing time; it is to prevent an accidental second month.

The eight-service verdicts

ServiceSeptember verdictCheapest credible current routePause/cancel instruction
NetflixKeep / activateStandard with ads $8.99; Standard $19.99; Premium $26.99 monthly. Netflix's current US plan page shows monthly prices and no annual plan. 9Cancel through the account page, not by deleting the app. You keep access through the paid billing period; do not call this a pause. 10
Disney+Skip/cancelWith ads $11.99/month; Premium $18.99/month or $189.99/year. The Disney+/Hulu bundle starts at $12.99/month, and Disney+/Hulu/Max with ads is $19.99/month. 11No September anchor is strong enough to justify a new standalone bill. Cancel through the account or billing partner; do not assume a pause feature.
MaxSkip unless already coveredThe current plan comparison lists Basic with ads at $10.99/$109.99 annual, Standard at $18.49/$184.99, and Premium at $22.99/$229.99. 12No September trigger here is worth adding a full-price subscription. Cancel rather than budgeting around an unverified hold option.
Paramount+Conditional one-month activateEssential $8.99/month or $89.99/year; Premium $13.99/month or $139.99/year. 13The official signup page says cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period and shows no pause language. 14
PeacockSkipSelect $8/month or $80/year; Premium $11/month or $110/year; Premium Plus $17/month or $170/year, based on a July 16 updated comparison. 15No verified September anchor in this issue. Peacock's official plan page exposes the plan names and annual billing but not the prices in the readable page text, so verify checkout before buying.
Apple TV+Seven-day trial / one-month activate$12.99/month after a new-subscriber seven-day trial. Apple's public page did not show an annual Apple TV+ price. It also lists an Apple TV+ and Peacock bundle at $14.99/month. 16The trial is the cleanest route for Mayday. Cancel before day seven if that is all you need; otherwise pay for one month and cancel immediately after subscribing.
HuluPauseHulu alone $11.99/month; Disney+ and Hulu with ads $12.99/month; Disney+, Hulu, and Max with ads starts at $19.99/month. 17Hulu is the one service here with a clearly documented hold: eligible monthly subscribers can pause for up to 12 weeks, with automatic resume and billing afterward. Annual, promotional, gift-card, and many third-party-billed accounts are excluded. 18
Prime VideoActivate only for a defined bingePrime is $14.99/month or $139/year and includes a 30-day trial. 5If Prime is already a shopping membership, count Prime Video's incremental cost as $0. If not, do not open it indefinitely for one show: start near Sept. 16 and cancel before renewal if the binge is complete.

The safest cost plans

Plan A: the disciplined standalone stack

For the broadest September coverage without Prime:
  • Netflix Standard with ads: $8.99
  • Apple TV+: $12.99
  • Paramount+ Essential: $8.99
  • Total: $30.97/month
This is the recommended ceiling plan only when the household wants all three anchors. If Clash of the Thundermans is not on the family calendar, remove Paramount+ and the total falls to $21.98. That is below the $25-$35 target, and below is the point: the range is a ceiling, not a spending quota.
If you do not already have Prime but Neagley outranks Mayday, use Netflix plus Prime instead: $8.99 + $14.99 = $23.98 for one month. Do not add Apple TV+ automatically. Rotate the second service next month.

Plan B: use a phone bundle only when you already qualify

Verizon's Netflix and HBO Max with ads perk is now $13/month, not the old $10 price, and the reported savings are $6.98/month. 19 If an eligible Verizon plan already gives you that perk and you also qualify for the $15 Apple One perk, the streaming add-ons total $13 + $15 = $28/month. Verizon's Apple One support page lists the individual perk at $15/month; check the qualifying plan before counting it. 20 Apple One includes Apple TV+ alongside other Apple services; Max is a bonus, not a reason to add another standalone bill.
T-Mobile's official newsroom describes Hulu and Netflix as included with Experience Beyond and Apple TV at $3/month, with the customer-facing eligibility details handled through the account. 21 If you already have that qualifying phone plan, the marginal streaming line can be as low as $3 for Apple TV+, with Hulu and Netflix on us. Do not switch a phone plan solely to chase a streaming discount; compare the full wireless bill, taxes, and lost benefits.
AT&T is not included in this month's math because I did not verify a currently active, directly comparable bundle term. That is a deliberate omission, not an invitation to treat an old promotion as current.

Annual prepay: where it helps, and where it does not

Annual billing is useful for a service you will actually use for most of the next year. It is the wrong move for a rotation service.
  • Prime: $139/year versus $179.88 at $14.99 monthly, a $40.88 annual difference.
  • Disney+ Premium: $189.99/year versus $227.88 monthly, a $37.89 difference.
  • Paramount+ Essential: $89.99/year versus $107.88 monthly; Premium: $139.99/year versus $167.88 monthly.
  • Peacock Select, Premium, and Premium Plus: $80, $110, and $170/year, respectively, versus twelve monthly payments.
  • Max's listed annual prices are $109.99, $184.99, and $229.99 by tier.
Netflix, Apple TV+, and Hulu did not show annual standalone prices on the official pages read for this issue. Do not infer a discount from a third-party checkout or convert a monthly trial into annual billing by accident.

Price-hike anti-pattern: audit before the next bill

Paramount+ raised Essential from $7.99 to $8.99 and Premium from $12.99 to $13.99 on January 15, 2026. 13 If you are keeping it only for a single movie, use one month and cancel; the annual plan is not a bargain for a one-title household.
The sharper September warning is Verizon's Netflix + HBO Max perk: it moved from $10 to $13 on May 6. At $13, it still beats buying Netflix with ads and Max with ads separately ($8.99 + $10.99 = $19.98) if you genuinely use both. But if you only watch Netflix, the standalone $8.99 plan is now better priced by $4.01/month. Recheck the perk line before the next billing cycle rather than treating the old $10 value as permanent.

The 90-day look

October has a clear Apple TV+ reactivation signal: Nocturne premieres October 30 with two episodes, then releases weekly through December 25. 22 November has a clean Prime Video binge: Blade Runner 2099 premieres November 25 with all eight episodes. 23
So the rotation should not roll forward unchanged. Use Netflix for September's multiple launch windows, then consider swapping the Apple TV+ line into October and the Prime line into late November. Keep Hulu paused for up to 12 weeks if you are eligible, cancel unused Paramount+ and Peacock, and make every reactivation answer one question: what exactly are we watching before the next bill?
