NBA Daily Digest: LeBron chooses Philadelphia, Caldwell-Pope follows the roster trail

LeBron James, the Philadelphia 76ers-bound forward, announced that he will sign with Philadelphia after considering retirement and other destinations. NBA.com reported that the deal is expected to be for two years and $8 million. James said he still wants to compete for another championship, making this a basketball decision rather than a final-career farewell. 1

The move gives Philadelphia a group built around James, 76ers center Joel Embiid, 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey and 76ers forward Jaylen Brown. The 76ers went 45-37 last season and were swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks in the second round, so the roster has changed sharply since that exit. The practical question now is how coach Nick Nurse balances four high-usage offensive players while keeping Embiid available for the postseason. 1

James' announcement also closes the market's largest unresolved question. The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves were among the teams that pursued him, and CBS Sports' post-decision review describes how each must now move forward without a comparable free-agent target. 3

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard, is negotiating a buyout and intends to join James in Philadelphia, according to a report cited by NBC Sports Philadelphia. The move is not complete: the buyout must be finalized, and the 76ers still need to create roster space for both players. 4

Caldwell-Pope brings two championship connections with James and a familiar 3-and-D profile, but the immediate availability question is real. The 33-year-old guard had surgery on his right pinkie finger in February after a season-ending injury. Memphis said he was expected to recover fully and be ready for the start of 2026-27. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per game last season, while his 31.6% three-point rate was his lowest since 2015-16. 4

That makes the Sixers' next step more than a ceremonial reunion. They need to complete the paperwork, open roster room and confirm that Caldwell-Pope's recovery remains on schedule.

The NBA board was quiet across the July 25 display window. ESPN listed no games on either the July 24 or July 25 scoreboard, so there were no new final scores, playoff results or series changes to report. 56

There was no standard game-day injury report because no NBA games were on the board. Caldwell-Pope's recovery is the clearest player-availability item attached to the day's roster news; the league's next formal availability updates will come closer to training camp and preseason.

The official NBA schedule puts the next major league events well after the free-agency burst. The Hall of Fame Class of 2026 Enshrinement Weekend is set for Aug. 14-15. The Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets are scheduled to meet in Macao on Oct. 9 and 11, and NBA Cup group play begins Oct. 30 on Prime Video. 7

The next meaningful NBA checks are Philadelphia's formal transaction entries, the roster-space solution for James and Caldwell-Pope, and the health timeline for a Sixers core that now carries championship expectations before playing a game together.
