Academic Fantasy Digest — Issue #5: Night Witch, Wistoria Season 3, and Abracademia's school demo
This issue sorts the week's strongest academic-fantasy signals: Jaymin Eve's Weatherstone College sequel, Wistoria's season 3 production news, late-volume manga and home-video releases, and a catch-up demo for Abracademia's wizard-school life sim.
The strongest academic-fantasy signal this week is clean: a major campus-romantasy sequel landed in books, Wistoria immediately bought itself more runway on screen, and the game lane has one June demo worth catching up on even though it predates this week's window.
| Pick | Format | Date signal | Best fit | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Night Witch by Jaymin Eve | Book | On sale June 23, 2026 | Readers who want Weatherstone College, elemental magic, and enemies-to-lovers dark academia | Read now if romantasy is already your lane; skip if you want low-romance school fantasy 1 |
| Wistoria: Wand and Sword season 3 | Anime | Production announced June 28, 2026 | Regarden Magic Academy fans who like underdog battle-school fantasy | Track now; the renewal keeps the academy arc alive after season 2 2 |
| Chivalry of a Failed Knight Complete Collection BD | Anime home video | North American release June 23, 2026 | Collectors of magical-knight academy anime | Buy only if you collect discs; otherwise this is a reminder to revisit the series 3 |
| A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! GN 18 | Manga | North American release June 23, 2026 | Supernatural-school comedy readers already following the series | Continue, not a jump-in point at volume 18 3 |
| Trinity Seven GN 32 | Manga | North American release June 23, 2026 | Magic-academy action fans keeping up with long runners | Continue only if caught up; volume 32 is deep-series territory 3 |
| Abracademia demo | Game | Demo released June 3, 2026; included here as a catch-up pick | Cozy wizard-school players who like idle sims and desktop companions | Try the demo if you want school scheduling and spell progression more than combat 4 |
Night Witch is the book release to sort first
Night Witch is the second book in Jaymin Eve's Weatherstone College duet, and Harlequin lists it as on sale June 23, 2026. The official copy puts the story back in year two at Weatherstone College, after Logan Kingston's first year ended with darkness, monsters, and an unresolved bond with the narrator 1.
The useful filter is tone. This is not the kind of academy fantasy built around lectures, houses, and puzzle-box lore. The publisher sells it as a spicy magical dark-academia romantasy, with elemental magic, forbidden romance, and an enemies-to-lovers arc. If you liked the first book, this is the obvious weekly read. If you mainly come to magic schools for curriculum, rival houses, and exams, put it behind the screen and game picks.
Wistoria gets the cleanest anime-news win
The official Wistoria: Wand and Sword site announced on June 28 that season 3 production has been decided, right after season 2's finale. The same post says a commemorative visual by character designer Sayaka Ono and a production-announcement teaser were released with the news 2.
For this channel, the fit is obvious: Will Serfort's story is anchored at Regarden Magic Academy, where his lack of conventional magic clashes with a school and social order built around magical rank. Anime News Network's write-up also notes that Crunchyroll streamed season 2 as it aired and that Kodansha USA describes the manga as Will entering Regarden Magic Academy to reach the top of the magical world 5.
Verdict: track it rather than rewatch immediately. The announcement confirms more is coming, but it does not yet give a premiere window for season 3.
The manga shelf is mostly for continuing readers
This week's North American anime and manga release list has several school-adjacent or magic-academy-adjacent items, but most are late-volume releases. That makes them useful signals for existing fans, not fresh on-ramps.
| Title | Publisher / format | Date | Why it matters here | Reader move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chivalry of a Failed Knight Complete Collection | Sentai Filmworks Blu-ray Disc | June 23 | A magical-knight academy series returning as a North American home-video package | Buy if you collect physical anime; stream or sample first if new 3 |
| A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! GN 18 | Yen Press print manga | June 23 | Supernatural school comedy with a high volume count, so continuity matters | Continue if you are already reading; new readers should start at volume 1 3 |
| Trinity Seven GN 32 | Yen Press print manga | June 23 | Long-running magic-academy action remains active in English print | Continue, but do not treat volume 32 as an entry point 3 |
One caveat: the same release list is broad, and plenty of fantasy titles in it are not academic fantasy. I would not pad the digest with generic isekai or dungeon releases unless they actually use school, academy, teacher, exam, or formal magical study as part of the appeal.
Game catch-up: Abracademia is small, specific, and more school than spell combat
Abracademia falls outside the June 22-29 weekly window, but it is still the best academic-fantasy game pick to catch up on because its demo went live earlier in June and the store page is unusually explicit about school structure. Steam lists the demo release date as June 3, 2026, with a premise built around picking a coven, managing a daily routine, learning spells, making friends, taking exams, and working toward graduation 4.
The demo is not pretending to be a full RPG campaign. The press release says it covers the first month of enrollment, includes entrance exams and coven assignment, and gives access to 10 of the full game's 20 magic disciplines. The full game is planned around five school years and more than 300 spells 6.
Rock Paper Shotgun's June 12 write-up had the right reservation: the pitch is charming if you are open to an idle game that lives on the bottom of your desktop, but that format is the dealbreaker for some players. Its summary of the loop is still useful: create a wizard, live through five school years, learn spells across many disciplines, and maintain relationships with other students 7.
Verdict: try the demo if you liked Witchbrook's school-life promise but want something playable now. Skip if you need exploration, combat, or a conventional narrative campaign.
Book radar beyond this week's new release
Pan Macmillan updated its fantasy recommendation guide on June 26, and two academy-adjacent entries are worth filing away as track-later picks rather than this week's main read.
- Fallen Gods sends Rey Stjerne to Endir University on a mission to steal Mjolnir, which puts Norse-inspired fantasy romance inside a university setting rather than a classic child-at-school frame 8.
- The Ashes of Thezmarr series begins with Wren Embervale being offered a place at an ancient academy after a royal attack, with trials and alchemy-fueled fantasy doing the academy work 8.
Treat that guide as a discovery list, not a neutral critic's ranking. It is still useful when you want to widen the shelf beyond strict magic-school novels into university fantasy, ancient academies, and scholarly sorcerers.
What to do this week
Start with Night Witch if your academy-fantasy shelf leans romantic and adult. Track Wistoria for the next real anime date, because season 3 is confirmed but not scheduled. For games, give Abracademia one demo session before writing it off; this is the rare wizard-school game where exams, routine, and classmates seem to be the point rather than background flavor.
