Knicks Are Champions. Now the Trade War Begins.

New York ended its 53-year drought on Friday night in San Antonio, and the offseason officially opened the minute Jalen Brunson's 12-foot floater split the net with 1:06 left. The parade is Thursday. The trade deadline is in eight days. Here's every rumor and roster move that mattered in the week of June 8–15.

The Knicks closed out the Spurs 94–90 in Game 5 on June 13, winning the series 4–1 and their third franchise championship — and first since 1973. 1 The pattern that defined the series held through the final horn: New York fell behind by double digits in the first quarter of every game, trailed by 10 points (83–73) early in the fourth, and still won. 2

Brunson finished Game 5 with 45 points on 14-of-27 shooting — a Knicks Finals single-game scoring record and the highest total by a road player in a clinching game since Michael Jordan's 45 in 1998. 3 He scored 10 straight points to tie the game at 83 after New York's deficit hit its peak, then hit the go-ahead floater at the 1:06 mark that the Spurs never answered. 1

For the series, Brunson averaged 32.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists — the highest scoring average by a point guard in Finals history — and was named Finals MVP by unanimous vote. 3 He joins Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and six others as the only players to hold NCAA championship, NBA championship, and Finals MVP simultaneously. 4

Karl-Anthony Towns (center, New York Knicks) fouled out in 23 minutes with just 2 points on 1-of-7 shooting in the clincher. Mitchell Robinson (center, New York Knicks) filled the gap: 10 rebounds, including the offensive board on Josh Hart's missed free throw with 22 seconds left that led directly to Anunoby's sealing free throws. 1 Robinson played through a broken right pinky the entire Finals. He is an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was direct: "The better team won. We did a lot of good things, and we didn't finish the job." 1 Dylan Harper (guard/forward, San Antonio Spurs) scored 25 points in the loss and is the first rookie to score 20-plus multiple times in a Finals since Richard Dumas in 1993.

One subplot that will not be reviewed: in the third quarter, Victor Wembanyama (center, San Antonio Spurs) stepped into Brunson's landing zone on a three-point attempt. Brunson landed on Wemby's foot and visibly reacted. Referee Scott Foster did not call a flagrant foul. Had he done so, it would have been Wembanyama's fourth flagrant-foul point of the playoffs, triggering an automatic one-game suspension for Game 6. Bill Simmons called it "absolutely horrific missed call on Wemby," and Kevin O'Connor wrote: "I can't believe that wasn't a flagrant. Very clearly was in Brunson's landing zone." 5 With no Game 6 to play, the question is moot.

New York mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced the city's first Knicks ticker-tape parade for Thursday, June 18, along Broadway's Canyon of Heroes from Battery Park to City Hall. 6 It will be the first parade in franchise history — the 1970 and 1973 titles never got one.

Offseason cap situation: the Knicks currently have eight players signed for 2026–27 at roughly $209 million, about $13 million below the NBA's second apron (the hard-cap threshold that restricts trades and buyout signings, projected at ~$201M). Re-signing Robinson and Landry Shamet — who shot 47.5% from three in the playoffs — would push them over it. 8

The most consequential deadline in the NBA offseason isn't free agency — it's June 23, when Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam wants Giannis Antetokounmpo's future settled. That's eight days from today. 9

The big development this week: the Celtics submitted a formal trade offer to Milwaukee.

Bill Simmons confirmed it on his June 14 podcast: "From what I heard, they made an offer in the past week. A couple days before I mentioned it on Thursday. I don't know what the offer was and I don't know who was in it, but they are in it — hat was in the ring." 10 Zach Lowe confirmed on the same podcast that Boston is "not just dipping their toe in, but diving in." Simmons predicted: "I think Boston's going to get Giannis, and I think it will happen in the next week." 9

Lowe added appropriate caution: "The safest bet is always inertia. The safest bet is, 'We know the nucleus that we have works really well, and there's some degree of risk in shaking that up for a 31-year-old who's been injury prone, and we're going to have to sign him to a ginormous extension.'" 10

Kevin O'Connor reported that Boston is "open to trading anybody besides Jayson Tatum." A deal involving Jaylen Brown (guard/forward, Boston Celtics) as the salary anchor is one framework, though Brown told fans on Twitch: "If it were up to me, I would play in Boston for the next 10 years." 11 A non-Brown structure would involve Derrick White, Sam Hauser, Payton Pritchard, and multiple first-round picks. Brad Stevens told reporters at his end-of-season press conference that the Celtics need "more of an impact at the rim" — Giannis has led the NBA in made field goals inside five feet in each of the last five seasons. 10

Per Simmons, Giannis prefers Boston or Miami, in that order, based on championship opportunity. He is reportedly willing to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with the Celtics. 12

Heat remain the frontrunner by most accounts. Marc Stein reported "momentum continues to rest with the Miami Heat," while also noting he has "spoken to teams and well-placed insiders around the league who believe that it remains possible that Antetokounmpo does not ultimately land on South Beach." 13 The refined Heat package per The Athletic: Tyler Herro + Kel'el Ware + Jaime Jaquez Jr. + either Pelle Larsson or Kasparas Jakučionis + up to three first-round picks. Notably, Nikola Jović — part of the previous package — has been relegated from the core offer. Tyler Herro unfollowed the Heat on social media last week. 14 Gery Woelfel reported the Bucks are "comfortable with the Heat's offer for Antetokounmpo but have been trying to enlist a third team to sweeten the deal." 15

Here's where every team stands:

Contract context: Giannis (forward, Milwaukee Bucks, age 31) is owed $58.5M in 2026–27 with a $62.8M player option for 2027–28. Any receiving team must wait six months post-trade before offering the four-year, $275M extension available October 1. He played 36 games this season — 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 62.4% FG. 14

James Harden (guard, Cleveland Cavaliers) was arrested in Houston at 3:41 AM on June 13 on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon — specifically, a handgun found in plain sight, unholstered, in a vehicle he owns. He was booked at 4:57 AM, posted a $100 bond, and was released before dawn. His arraignment is scheduled for June 22. 1617

His bail conditions prohibit carrying weapons, alcohol consumption, and drug use, and require random drug testing. 17

The Cavaliers' full statement: "The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information. We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment." 19 His representatives declined to comment to ESPN.

The contract complication: Harden holds a $42.3M player option ($13.3M guaranteed) for 2026–27 that must be decided by June 29. Since May 29 — 17 days ago — a two-year, $60M extension had been described as agreed in principle by Cleveland media, but no signed paperwork has been reported. League sources told ESPN they have "heavy expectation" that Harden and the Cavaliers will still agree to a multiyear deal, with estimates ranging from two years at $56M (per ESPN's Bobby Marks) to two years at $65–70M (per John Hollinger). The arrest's legal, reputational, or contractual impact on that framework has not been reported. 1619

In 26 regular-season games after his February trade from the Clippers, Harden averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists. He posted 19.2 points and 5.5 assists in the playoffs as Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. 18

Sam Amick (The Athletic) and Michael Scotto (HoopsHype) both confirmed that the Sacramento Kings and Charlotte Hornets have had preliminary discussions about Domantas Sabonis (center, Sacramento Kings). The reported framework: Miles Bridges ($22.8M expiring) + Josh Green ($14.7M) + a first-round pick in exchange for Sabonis. The Hornets declined to include their 2026 first-round pick — either #14 or #18 — and Amick wrote there is no deal imminent and the trade looks unlikely before the June 26 draft. 20 Sabonis has two years and $94.1M remaining on his contract and played just 19 games in 2025–26 after a November meniscus tear. The Toronto Raptors previously had serious interest.

Rich Paul (CEO, Klutch Sports, LeBron James's agent) told The Pat McAfee Show on June 13: "There's nobody that knows anything about anything that pertains to LeBron. All these reports, nobody knows. They're just speculating. They put out salaries, nobody knows. There's been zero conversations and there won't be conversations until I have a conversation with the man himself." 21 Paul confirmed 10 to 12 teams have expressed interest in LeBron as a free agent.

A well-connected league source told Monte Poole (NBC Sports Bay Area) separately: "I know it seems crazy. But there is at least curiosity on both sides. This wouldn't even be a conversation five or six years ago, and it might not happen now, but there's enough there that we shouldn't ignore the possibility. It's mostly up to LeBron." 22 The Warriors' realistic offer is capped at roughly the non-taxpayer mid-level exception (~$15M) without a major roster restructure. The Lakers remain the most likely landing spot.

The Memphis Grizzlies are trying to trade Ja Morant (point guard, Memphis Grizzlies). No confirmed destination exists. CBS Sports' Sam Quinn ranked Morant 11th on his 2026 offseason trade-candidate list, writing: "Some team is going to talk itself into the idea that if the front office builds an offense around him, he can recapture the rim-pressure that once made him a star. The numbers don't support that idea." 23 His 2026–27 salary: $42.17M. Memphis traded Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. in the past year and is in a rebuild.

Trae Young (guard, Washington Wizards) holds a $48.9M player option due by June 23. Young is widely expected to decline it and sign a new deal, most likely in the range of three years, $120M (per Marc Stein's model). On The Pivot podcast, Young said: "I wanted to go [to Washington]. It's not like [Atlanta] just shipped me there. That wasn't the case." He added: "This is the most slept on I've been in my whole life." 24 He played just 15 games in 2025–26 due to a quad bruise, MCL sprain, and back issues.

Marc Stein reported June 14 that Aaron Gordon (forward, Denver Nuggets) is "receiving trade interest" and is the most coveted Nuggets trade target, but Denver prefers to move Christian Braun (guard/forward, Denver Nuggets) instead. Gordon is in year one of a three-year, $103.6M extension with a player option on year three. He played just 87 games over the past two seasons due to injury. 25

Chicago Bulls hired Tiago Splitter as their new head coach on June 15, per Shams Charania. 26 Splitter, 41, went 42–39 as interim head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers this season after Chauncey Billups was placed on leave following an FBI gambling-probe arrest. He led Portland to the play-in tournament — the franchise's first postseason appearance since the 2019–20 bubble. The Spurs eliminated them 4–1 in the first round. Splitter won an NBA title as a player with San Antonio in 2014 and has previously served as an assistant with the Nets, Rockets, and Paris Basketball.

The Bulls' four finalists were Splitter, Micah Nori (Minnesota Timberwolves assistant), Ryan Schmidt (Atlanta Hawks assistant), and Wes Unseld Jr. (Chicago Bulls assistant). 27

Splitter's departure creates an immediate vacancy in Portland. The Dallas Mavericks are also still searching, with candidates including Micah Nori, Royal Ivey (Houston Rockets assistant), Jama Mahlalela (Toronto Raptors assistant), Tony Dobbins (Boston Celtics assistant), and former Blazers head coach Terry Stotts — interviews were held over the June 14–15 weekend. 27

Zero official transactions were recorded in the June 8–15 window. This is standard for the pre-draft period — no contracts can be signed until free agency opens July 6. 28

Notable player options approaching their June 29 deadline: Harden ($42.3M, partial guarantee), Marcus Smart (Los Angeles Lakers, model values him at $11.6M), and five Milwaukee Bucks players — Kevin Porter Jr. ($5.39M), Gary Trent Jr. ($3.82M), Gary Harris ($3.82M), Taurean Prince ($3.82M), and Jericho Sims ($2.80M). Hollinger predicts all five will decline their options and re-sign at minimum salary, freeing roughly $5M in Bucks cap flexibility. 29

Draft green room: The NBA issued its first wave of invitations on June 9. The 14 invitees include AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Darryn Peterson (Kansas), Cameron Boozer (Duke), Caleb Wilson (UNC), Keaton Wagler (Illinois), Darius Acuff (Arkansas), and eight others. Yaxel Lendeborg (Michigan, ESPN #12) and Morez Johnson (Michigan, ESPN #14) were not in the first wave; additional invites are expected. 30
