Box office and streaming
1. The Odyssey becomes Universal's biggest global hit ever
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has officially surpassed Jurassic World to become the highest-grossing release in Universal Pictures history, reaching $1.684 billion worldwide. The historical epic generated $601.2 million domestically and $1.083 billion overseas across nine weekends in theaters. The milestone cements the film as the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time globally and the biggest non-franchise release in modern box-office tracking.
2. Practical Magic 2 conjures a $30M weekend win
Warner Bros. and Alcon's Practical Magic 2 led the North American box office with an estimated $30 million opening across 4,146 theaters. Propelled by strong turnout from female moviegoers and a 93% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, the sequel outpaced recent nostalgic follow-ups like Freakier Friday. The debut kicked off fall moviegoing with a solid return on its $75 million net production budget.
3. Netflix agrees to report box-office grosses for upcoming slate
Ending years of theatrical secrecy, Netflix announced it will publicly report ticket grosses for six major upcoming releases. The reporting roster includes Cannes winner La Bola Negra, David Fincher's The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, Mosquito Bowl, Ink, Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The policy shift signals a friendlier relationship with major theater chains ahead of wider theatrical windows.
4. Reacher storms back to No. 1 on Nielsen streaming charts
Prime Video's Reacher returned to the top spot on Nielsen's U.S. streaming rankings for the week of Aug. 10–16, racking up 1.5 billion viewing minutes. The three-episode season four launch accounted for 1.19 billion minutes on its own, giving Alan Ritchson's action series its fifth-highest weekly total. Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso followed closely with 996 million minutes, while Paramount+'s Lioness posted a series-high 955 million minutes.
