Montréal road worlds, the Laver Cup and Batumi juniors: Team USA watch, Sept. 21–27 (2026)

This issue covers Sept. 21–27, 2026, and Montréal owns the week. The UCI Road World Championships run their full programme there — junior, under-23 and elite, against the clock and then on the road — through Sunday, when the men's elite road race closes the championships. In London, the Laver Cup puts Taylor Fritz, Brandon Nakashima and Learner Tien on the same Team World bench. Batumi, Georgia, hosts the fifth stop of figure skating's Junior Grand Prix, and Oberstdorf, Germany hosts the senior Nebelhorn Trophy. The sorting that matters for planning is simple. Montréal awards world titles. The Laver Cup decides nothing outside its own three days. Batumi is junior development. Oberstdorf is a senior international measuring stick.

What changed since last week

The FIBA Women's World Cup final is settled. The United States beat France 97–79 in Berlin on Sept. 13 for a fifth consecutive title and a 12th overall. 7

Prague went to Czechia, and the U.S. is out of the Davis Cup. Trailing 1–2, the host Czech Republic won both reverse singles on Saturday, Sept. 19 to take the tie 3–2. Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek had given the Americans the lead by winning the doubles 5–7, 6–3, 7–6 (8), but Jakub Mensik came from a set down to beat Ben Shelton 5–7, 6–4, 6–3, and Jiri Lehecka beat Learner Tien 6–3, 7–5 in the deciding match. Czechia joins the Final 8 in Bologna on Nov. 24–29; the United States drops to the 2027 Qualifiers first round. 8

Copenhagen gave the United States a mixed team gold and two individual medals. At the World Athletics Road Running Championships, Yared Nuguse took silver in the men's road mile in a season's-best 3:52.33, behind Germany's Robert Farken in 3:51.80, with Vincent Ciattei eighth in 3:54.62. Nuguse and Ciattei then combined with Addison Wiley (10th in 4:31.02) and Gracie Hyde (11th in 4:31.92) to win the mixed team title in 16:49.89. In Sunday's women's half marathon, Emma Grace Hurley finished fifth in a personal best 1:06:23, Weini Kelati Frezghi was sixth in 1:06:35 and Jessica McClain seventh in 1:06:53, which put the United States second in the team standings behind Kenya; Agnes Ngetich won in a women-only world record 1:05:15. 9 10

Soldier Hollow produced two American under-23 podiums. Makena Kellerman finished second in the women's under-23 cross-country short track in 20:52 and third in the under-23 cross-country Olympic race in 1:21:01 as the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series closed its American round in Midway, Utah. 11

Montréal opened with the elite time trials. Marlen Reusser of Switzerland defended her women's elite time trial title in 50:24.44 on her 35th birthday. Taylor Knibb was the best American in 13th, 2:18.91 back, and Kristen Faulkner finished 21st. The men's elite time trial was still running when this issue was assembled, with Artem Shmidt among the riders out on the course. 12 13

The LA28 read

Montréal decides who wears the rainbow jersey, not who goes to Los Angeles. Olympic road places are settled later, from national ranking positions built across a qualification window rather than from one week of racing, so results in Montréal feed that ledger without settling anything on their own. Read this week as a world-title fight first: the elite time trials are done, the mixed relay team time trial runs Tuesday, the women's elite road race is Saturday and the men's elite road race closes the championships on Sunday. 2 14

London is an exhibition. The Laver Cup sits outside the ranking structures that feed Olympic selection, so the only thing on the line at The O2 is the cup itself and the three days of team tennis around it. Watch it for Fritz, Nakashima and Tien playing in the same shirt, not for anything that moves an American toward the Games. 3 17

Batumi is development. The Junior Grand Prix builds skaters toward the junior Final and, eventually, the senior circuit. A placing in Batumi is a marker of where a young American stands internationally; it is not a selection result for any senior team. 4 18

Oberstdorf is a measuring stick. The Challenger Series exists to give skaters senior international competitions and World Standing points early in the season, which is why Nebelhorn's fields matter for the season's shape rather than for an Olympic team. 19
