When Big Feelings Hit, Start Here
When a child is overwhelmed, the first useful move is often to show that you can see the feeling before you address the behavior. This episode explains the evidence behind emotion coaching, how to hold a boundary without dismissing the emotion, and one short sentence pattern to try in an ordinary family moment.
The three-part sentence
Try this sequence:
- Name what you see: “You wanted the blue cup.”
- State the boundary: “I won’t let you throw the red one.”
- Offer the next safe step: “You can put it on the counter, or I can help you.”
The point is not to make the crying stop on command. It is to help a child experience three things at once: the feeling can be understood, the action has a limit, and the adult can help the moment move somewhere safer.
