Three Trails Worth the Drive: July 15-22, 2026

For July 15-22, these are three very different trips worth planning: a glacier-facing climb at Lake Louise, a serious summit day on Mount Washington, and a cooler highland route to Virginia's highest point. Plain of Six Glaciers is the best choice if you can handle lingering snow; Tuckerman Ravine is the big-weather option; Mount Rogers is the most forgiving summer escape from lowland heat.

Pick this if: you want a full alpine day without committing to a technical climb, and you are willing to hike through early-season snow patches.

Parks Canada rates Plain of Six Glaciers as a moderate trail: 5.8 km one way, 595 m of elevation gain and about four hours round trip from the Lake Louise Lakeshore trailhead. The trail starts at the lake, then climbs toward the glacier-filled amphitheatre above it. 1

The current reason to choose it is also the reason to take it seriously. Parks Canada's last dated entry, July 10, rated the trail Fair and reported snow-covered and slippery sections, snow patches, and a recommendation for sturdy boots and hiking poles. Banff's general hiking guidance says the prime season runs from July through mid-September and that most alpine passes are snow-free by mid-July, but this route has not fully dried out yet. 12

Treat the trailhead as a transit-planning problem, not a drive-up lake stop. Parks Canada says the Lake Louise shuttle runs May 15 through October 15, paid parking is in effect over the same season, and spaces are limited. Regular shuttle reservations open in advance, with additional seats released on a rolling 48-hour window. A reservation includes free parking at the Lake Louise Park and Ride; the regular shuttles leave from the ski resort lot, not the lakeshore. 23

If you drive directly to the lake, the 2026 Lake Louise Lakeshore parking rate is CA$42 per vehicle. Parking is paid on site, cannot be booked ahead, and is separate from park admission. Canada Strong Pass makes Parks Canada admission free from June 19 through September 7, 2026, but it does not waive the lakeshore parking fee or shuttle cost. 34

Go / no-go check: keep the trip if you have boots with reliable grip, poles and enough daylight for a slow snow-covered descent. Recheck the trail report before leaving; do not treat the turquoise lake and clear valley weather as proof that the upper route is dry.

Pick this if: you want the hardest and most dramatic hike in this week's group, and you are comfortable turning around when the mountain says no.

From the Pinkham Notch visitor center, the standard Tuckerman Ravine route to Mount Washington is about 8.4 miles round trip with 4,250 feet of climbing and descending. A detailed route account rates it as a 5-9 hour day, with the first 2.4 miles relatively gradual before the ravine and final summit push become steep and rocky. Mount Washington's summit is 6,288 feet. 56

The route earns its place this week because the full summer experience is available: Crystal Cascades, Hermit Lake, the Tuckerman bowl and an exposed final approach to the summit. The same exposure is the catch. Mount Washington Observatory warns that higher-summit weather can change quickly and become extreme, and says its forecast is only one tool for deciding whether to go. 7

The trailhead is behind the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center on Route 16, near Gorham and the Mount Washington Auto Road. The Forest Service's current pass page does not list Pinkham Notch as a separate fee-site entry, so verify the lot's current payment instructions when you arrive rather than assuming that an America the Beautiful pass or a free lot applies. Arrive early enough to deal with a busy lot and a slow start; this is a long day even before weather delays. 58

Check the Observatory's higher-summits forecast immediately before departure, then compare it with the Forest Service warnings at Pinkham Notch. The Forest Service specifically points hikers toward Tuckerman and Huntington Ravine avalanche advisories and warns that high-mountain weather can shift fast. Carry warm and rain layers, food, water, a headlamp, a map and a route plan that allows a retreat. Wet rock and strong wind are enough reason to stop; summer does not remove the mountain's exposure. 79

Go / no-go check: only commit to the summit if the same-day higher-summits forecast, visibility and wind are within your group's experience. Otherwise, turn the day into a shorter Hermit Lake or ravine outing and save the summit for a better window.

Pick this if: you want a long but nontechnical highland day, cooler air, open ridge walking and a good chance of seeing the area's famous ponies without chasing a hard summit route.

The Massie Gap route to Mount Rogers is 8.4 miles round trip with 1,378 feet of climbing. The route follows the Appalachian Trail past Wilburn Ridge and Thomas Knob before taking the Mount Rogers Spur Trail to Virginia's highest point. The summit itself is wooded, so the reward is the approach: open highland views, rock outcrops and the sense of crossing into the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The route source does not publish a fixed round-trip time; for this distance and elevation, plan roughly five to six hours plus breaks, and start early if the forecast is unsettled. 10

July is a good fit for the high country. Grayson Highlands says the park's higher areas rise above 5,000 feet, and that summer temperatures in the higher boulder fields are often in the 70s with cool breezes. Hikers are likely to encounter wild ponies, but the park says not to approach, feed or pet them. The route is exposed for long stretches, so a clear lowland forecast is not enough; bring a shell and check the mountain forecast before driving up. 11

Start at the Massie Gap parking area in Grayson Highlands State Park, near Mouth of Wilson. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., but its visitor center is scheduled to be closed for renovations from July 6 through August 15, 2026. Download or carry the map before you go; the trail guide notes that Massie Gap fills quickly during peak season. 1011

Virginia State Parks lists Grayson Highlands parking at $7 on standard days and $10 on weekends from April through October. Overnight backpacker parking is $15 per night. That fee is separate from camping reservations, and backcountry camping is not allowed inside Grayson Highlands State Park; overnight hikers must use the permitted Mount Rogers National Recreation Area side instead. 1112

Go / no-go check: this is the best pick of the three for a hot week, but do not mistake "cooler" for easy. The route is long, exposed and easy to extend with photo stops. Start early, carry more water than the valley temperature suggests, and give ponies a wide berth.

Before leaving for any of the three, check the land manager's current alerts on the morning of the hike. Weather and trail conditions can change faster than a weekly guide can.
