August 29 brings three moments when a boundary gave way: a treaty reshaped trade and territory in East Asia, an iron-ring experiment connected magnetism to electricity, and The Beatles left the touring circuit for the studio.

On August 29, 1842, the Treaty of Nanjing ended the First Opium War. The Qing government paid Britain an indemnity, ceded Hong Kong, and opened five treaty ports to British trade. Britannica identifies it as the first of the unequal treaties imposed on China by foreign imperial powers. 1

The war grew from Qing attempts to suppress British opium smuggling and from Britain’s dissatisfaction with its trading and diplomatic position. The treaty weakened the Qing dynasty and created a framework for further foreign demands. A supplementary treaty in 1843 granted British citizens extraterritorial rights and gave Britain any privileges China later granted to other countries. 2

On August 29, 1831, Michael Faraday wound two insulated coils around a thick iron ring. Closing and opening the battery circuit caused a galvanometer in the second coil to jump in opposite directions. The experiment showed that a changing magnetic condition could induce an electric current. 3

The apparatus and the principle behind it led toward the electric generator and the dynamo. The Royal Institution’s historical account also connects Faraday’s work to the modern understanding of electromagnetic induction and to the technology of power generation. 4

On August 29, 1966, The Beatles played their final proper concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. Photographer Jim Marshall documented the band around the venue, including backstage scenes.
