Issue 9: BILLY hides a real desk

IKEA's July 1 launch is big enough to be noisy: IKEA Japan said more than 550 new products started rolling out in stores and online on July 1, while Hunker published a 20-item July roundup the same day. 12 For a small apartment, the useful thread is narrower: furniture that changes jobs, storage that uses dead corners, and pieces that do not need permanent floor space.

Best for: a rental bedroom or living room where a desk cannot stay open all day.

Decision: Buy if you can anchor furniture to the wall and you want one piece to handle storage plus WFH. Skip if you need adjustable shelves, doors, or a no-drill setup.

The BILLY bookcase with foldable table uses a standard BILLY-style frame with three shelves, while the lower section rolls out and folds into a tabletop on wheels. 3 The captured dimensions are 31.5 inches wide by 13 inches deep when closed, 44 inches deep when open, and 41.7 inches high. 3 The table load is listed at 25 kg, or 55 lb, and the product weight is 14.26 kg, or 31.4 lb. 3

Price and availability: The US price is not cleanly confirmed because the captured sources conflict: Apartment Therapy's quick overview showed $149, while a captured IKEA US product listing showed $180. 34 UK pricing was found at £150, and Sweden pricing was found at 1,995 SEK. 56 Japan pricing and current stock status were not confirmed.

Assembly watch-out: Treat this as real furniture assembly, not a desk accessory. Official assembly instructions exist, the unit has two packages, and the available estimate is 45-90 minutes. 7 Apartment Therapy's hands-on review said it was "a bit more difficult to assemble than the standard BILLY," and the product must be secured to the wall. 3

Best for: a bed pushed against a wall, a loft bed, or a studio where a nightstand would block the walkway.

Decision: Buy if your phone, book, remote, or glasses currently live on the floor. Skip if you need a hard surface for a lamp or water glass.

STICKAT is a blue polyester bed pocket with one large pocket and two small pockets. 2 The captured dimensions are about 15 3/8 inches wide by 11 3/4 inches high, and the design hangs from the side of a bed instead of taking floor space. 2 Hunker framed the use case clearly: it is for rooms where there is no space for a bedside table, or only enough space for a narrow one. 2

Price and availability: The captured US price is $8. 2 UK, Japan, Nordic pricing, and current stock status were not confirmed in the research summary.

Assembly watch-out: There is no assembly. STICKAT hangs on the bed side and needs no tools. 2 The tradeoff is capacity: this replaces bedside clutter storage, not a real side table.

Best for: dark cabinets, pantries, wardrobes, under-sink storage, and rental kitchens where drilling is a nonstarter.

Decision: Buy if your storage is usable only when the room light is on. Skip if you dislike battery maintenance or need a hardwired under-cabinet light.

GÖMPYSSLING is a two-pack of white battery-operated LED sensor lights. 8 Each light is about 3 inches in diameter, uses a motion sensor for instant activation, and turns off automatically after 10 seconds without movement. 8 The installation uses a peel-and-stick gel pad, so the product fits renter kitchens and closets better than screw-mounted lighting. 8

Price and availability: The captured US price is $5 for two units, or $2.50 each. 2 UK, Japan, Nordic pricing, and current stock status were not confirmed in the research summary.

Assembly watch-out: There is no furniture assembly and no drilling. The watch-out is that rechargeable batteries are required and not included. 8

Best for: a one-person kitchen where the corner behind the kettle or coffee gear is wasted space.

Decision: Buy if you need low-cost vertical storage on the counter. Skip if your counter already feels visually crowded, because the shelf keeps everything visible.

NÅLBLECKA is a limited-edition two-tier corner shelf made from bamboo and steel. 2 The confirmed footprint is an 11-inch cube, or 28 cm by 28 cm by 28 cm. 14 That matters because one-person kitchens often have enough cabinet volume on paper but not enough easy-access counter organization.

Price and availability: The US price is captured as $25 in Hunker and $24.99 in the regional pricing check. 2 The UK price is £15, and Sweden pricing was found at 149 SEK. 910 Japan availability was found for a utensil-rack variant, but Japan pricing and current stock status were not confirmed. 15

Assembly watch-out: This is the lowest-friction furniture-adjacent pick of the week. Official assembly instructions exist, and the available estimate is 5-10 minutes for one person with roughly 8-10 screws. 11

Action link: Open the NÅLBLECKA corner shelf product page.

Best for: a tiny entryway, living-room corner, or bookshelf-adjacent spot where a soft seat should also hide small items.

Decision: Buy if you want the cheapest multi-use object in this week's five. Skip if you need a firm dining-height stool or hard-sided storage.

KJUGE is a pouf with storage that can work as a footrest, extra seat, and hidden storage cube. 2 The July signal is new deep green and gray-beige colorways, and the captured US dimensions are 15 inches in diameter by 13 inches high. 16 Hunker reported that reviewers liked its function and appearance, and that it can be assembled within minutes while handling a good amount of weight. 2

Price and availability: The captured US price is $12.99-$13, the UK price is £9, and Sweden pricing was found at 139 SEK. 21213 Japan pricing and current stock status were not confirmed.

Assembly watch-out: The assembly basis is estimated, not official. Hunker says it assembles within minutes, while the research estimate is 10-15 minutes for one person and notes that no independent official assembly PDF was confirmed. 2

Click BILLY first if your desk currently lives on the dining table. It has the most friction because of wall anchoring and assembly, but it also solves the biggest small-apartment problem: a real work surface that disappears. Click GÖMPYSSLING first if you only want a $5 rental-friendly fix, and click NÅLBLECKA first if your kitchen counter is the bottleneck.
