Briscoe's Chicagoland Breakthrough, Jones' Overtime Steal and CTMP's LMP2 Spotlight: Week 28

Chicagoland came back with a Toyota lockout at the front of the Cup race, a late O'Reilly Series restart duel, and a useful playoff-pressure readout. Chase Briscoe won the Cup race by 0.276 seconds over Christopher Bell, while Denny Hamlin finished third to complete Joe Gibbs Racing's 1-2-3 run; Brandon Jones beat Chase Elliott by 0.171 seconds in the O'Reilly race; and Connor Mosack led the final 71 laps of ARCA's first Chicagoland race since 2019. 123

The Cup takeaway is simple: Briscoe moved from a strong summer runner to a locked-in winner, and Toyota's intermediate-track pace looked deep. Seven Toyotas finished in the top 10, and Briscoe held the final 46 laps after the last green-flag stop cycle. 1

The points picture still runs through Hamlin and Reddick. NASCAR's official standings after Chicagoland list Hamlin first with 764 points and four wins, Reddick second with 720 points and five wins, and Briscoe up to eighth with 538 points after his first win of the season. 4

The In-Season Challenge also got more interesting. Round 3 at EchoPark includes a Joe Gibbs Racing head-to-head between Hamlin and Bell, while Alex Bowman and Todd Gilliland have kept lower-seed runs alive after Chicagoland. 5

Cup inspection cleared Briscoe's win, while NASCAR sent the Nos. 11 and 48 cars back to the R&D Center for teardown inspection. 1

In the O'Reilly garage, post-race inspection was also clean for Jones' win. The Nos. 0 and 54 each had one lug nut not safe and secure, costing those teams pit-stall selection at EchoPark, and the Nos. 88, 54 and 99 were selected for full teardown. 11

IMSA's main team-change note for this coming weekend is at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park: Car Blanche moves into GTD PRO with its No. 68 Aston Martin, Ricky Taylor makes an LMP2 cameo in the No. 52 BHA w/PR1 Mathiasen entry, and Robert Wickens returns in DXDT Racing's No. 36 Corvette. 12

IMSA's next WeatherTech round is not a standard all-class weekend. GTP is off, so LMP2 becomes the overall class at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the third straight year. The entry list shows 10 LMP2 cars, 10 GTD PRO cars and 13 GTD cars, with all three class title margins close enough to matter: 55 points in LMP2, 60 in GTD PRO and 157 in GTD between first and second. 12

The LMP2 race has a championship tell. IMSA notes that the last two CTMP LMP2 winners went on to win that class title, and George Kurtz / Alex Quinn arrive with a 55-point lead after Watkins Glen. 15

Briscoe's Chicagoland win matters because it locked another JGR car into the Cup win column and tightened Toyota's grip on the summer narrative. Jones' O'Reilly win matters because it came against Elliott in overtime, not by attrition. The coming weekend is split cleanly: NASCAR heads to EchoPark, IMSA gives LMP2 the CTMP spotlight, and the regional calendar has meaningful Modified, weekly-track and sprint-car racing instead of filler.
