Jordan Daily Brief — Monday, June 9, 2026
Five stories from Jordan today: the Kingdom prepares to mark 27 years of King Abdullah II's reign; Jordanian airspace was briefly breached by missiles before normal operations resumed; King Abdullah pressed for Arab sovereignty in a meeting with Iraq's parliament speaker; industrial exports rose 2.6% in Q1; and a rare Jupiter–Venus conjunction is visible tonight.
Today's bulletin covers five stories that matter to anyone tracking the Kingdom: a milestone royal anniversary, a security alert that activated sirens across the country, King Abdullah's diplomatic push for Arab sovereignty, two economic snapshots, and a rare celestial event visible tonight.
1. Jordan marks 27 years under King Abdullah II
Tomorrow, June 9, Jordan celebrates the 27th anniversary of King Abdullah II's accession to the throne. Since assuming constitutional powers in 1999, the King has pursued a broad reform agenda spanning institutional governance, healthcare expansion, economic development, and military modernization. 1
Queen Rania Al Abdullah is credited alongside that agenda — specifically for work in education reform, women's entrepreneurship, and international humanitarian advocacy.
On the foreign-policy front, Palestinian statehood remains the constant thread: Jordan's official position continues to call for a two-state solution based on international law.
2. Airspace breach triggers sirens; airports remain open
Missile fire linked to the ongoing Iran–Israel exchange crossed Jordanian airspace on the evening of June 7, prompting the Public Security Directorate to activate sirens across several areas. 2
Government spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani confirmed the breach and reiterated Jordan's firm stance: the Kingdom "will not allow its territory to be used as a battleground for any party."
By Monday morning, the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) reported that Jordan's airspace and all airports are operating normally. 3 CARC chairman Daifallah Al-Farajat advised passengers to confirm schedules with airlines before travelling, noting some individual flights may be affected by regional developments.
Iraq, by contrast, closed its airspace entirely on Monday morning until further notice. 4
3. King presses for Arab sovereignty in meeting with Iraqi parliament speaker
King Abdullah received Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat Al Halbousi at Al Husseiniya Palace on Sunday. 5 The meeting focused on strengthening Jordanian–Iraqi ties, and on the wider regional picture.
The King called for accelerating efforts to consolidate the US–Iran ceasefire, and specifically warned against using regional instability as justification to impose new facts on the ground in Jerusalem, the West Bank, or Gaza. The meeting included House of Representatives Speaker Mazen Qadi and Royal Court Director Alaa Batayneh.
The royal message is consistent: Jordan is using every bilateral channel to resist changes to the status quo in the Palestinian territories while the region remains unstable.
4. Economy: gold steady, industrial exports up 2.6%
Two economic data points published this week paint a stable, if cautious, picture.
- Gold: 21-karat gold is priced at JD 88 per gram on the local market as of Monday morning. 6
- Industrial exports: Jordanian industrial exports rose 2.6% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to data published by Petra News Agency. 7
The Franchise and Trade Agencies Expo 2026 opens in Amman today (Tuesday), adding a commercial dimension to an otherwise security-dominated news week. 8
4b. Franchise Expo opens in Amman today
The Franchise and Trade Agencies Expo 2026 opens at an Amman venue on Tuesday, gathering regional and international franchise brands alongside local entrepreneurs. 8
5. Look up tonight: Jupiter and Venus converge in a rare conjunction
The Jordan Meteorological Department says a Jupiter–Venus conjunction will be visible over the Kingdom on Tuesday evening. The two planets will appear unusually close in the western sky after sunset. 9
Separately, moderate summer weather is forecast across most of Jordan through the week, with lower-than-typical humidity. 10
