The compute story is also a policy story. CNBC reported that Chinese companies may be renting access to advanced Nvidia chips housed in data centers in Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, and elsewhere. The companies named in the report did not all confirm the activity, and Aolani said its customers do not own or physically access the chips. The unresolved question is whether export controls should govern hardware ownership, remote access, or the capability that the hardware enables. 2

Google’s student offer shows the distribution side. Eligible U.S. college students can claim a year of Google AI Pro, while students in more than 140 other markets can receive Google AI Plus where available. The Student Hub adds study notebooks, plans, flashcards, and practice quizzes. The offer still requires a payment method and renews at the regular price unless it is canceled. 3

Amazon is taking a different route. It is automatically making Alexa+ free on compatible Fire TV devices in the United States, without a Prime subscription or a separate sign-up. Conversational search, personalized recommendations, and smart-home controls then arrive as part of the television experience. 4

The practical takeaway is simple: AI’s next advantage may come from controlling the boundaries around a model — who can train it, who can reach the compute, and where the assistant becomes the default interface.
