Episode guide

Four stories this morning, and one shape underneath all of them. In every single one, somebody found out what something cost after they had already paid: a first date that came with unspoken terms, a friendship with a punchline in it, a nap nobody mentioned, and a surprise with an invoice attached.
These are anonymous posters' accounts, paraphrased to protect identifying details. A Reddit post is one person's version of events rather than proof of every claim in it, and a comment section is a crowd of readers reacting, not a verdict. Where a poster reports what somebody else said, thought or felt, this piece repeats it as the poster's account. All four stories surfaced on 17 October 2026. The first one is a recap of a post from September with its updates.

A shed, a backpack, and no bathroom

She is in her forties and he is about the same age. His dating profile said he was very successful and financially comfortable, but low key about it. She was late to the date, he had already left by the time she arrived, and then he came back when she called to apologise. From that point on, she wrote, the date was genuinely great. He asked before he kissed her, and he was, in her assessment, a very good kisser. 1
Then they were making out in his car and he asked if she wanted to stop by one of his nearby properties. He works in property investment, owns several rentals, and is always looking for his next project. The property was a shed. A dusty one, with a mattress on the floor and a plan to become a small living space at some point. It did not currently have a bathroom.
They started fooling around anyway, and then he stopped and said he was not sure this was a good idea, and then, almost immediately afterwards, told her she was so skinny. She still cannot tell whether the two sentences were connected. Her own theory is that he was worried he might break her. Nothing happened, which she later counted as lucky, because that was when she found out about the plumbing.
After that it turned strange. He wanted to know whether they knew any of the same people, and said some of his family were very socially connected and intrusive about his dating life. He asked her not to tell anyone. She still does not know where he actually lives. And at one point he walked to his car and came back with a backpack, took out rolls of hundred dollar bills, and remarked that he carries far too much cash.
They went for food, the date became normal again, and they talked about children. She told him she cannot have biological children and that it had been painful for her. He was kind about it, and then told her he had always hoped to meet someone he could have a child with, and began asking whether she could be tested again, or see a doctor, or consider adoption. On a first date, two hours after the mattress in the shed.
Two days later the conversation on the dating app was gone, and so was his profile. She googled his phone number and got nothing. A week after that he texted again: he was putting in a hot tub for the winter, and maybe she would like to try it out. She still did not know which house the hot tub was going into.
1,413 upvotes and 654 comments. The room arrived at the answer in about four seconds. Girl, you know where he lives — it is the shed. Others went further: he is probably married, and the shed is where he takes people, which would explain both the questions about mutual friends and the request for silence. One commenter supplied the word of the day and called him a hobosexual.

"You look like a highway with hair"

She is twenty, at college, and her friend N has been commenting on her body since the day they met. Sometimes it was small: a remark about what she was eating, a joke about skipping dessert. Sometimes N pointed at her stomach in photographs, or told her which outfits did not suit her body. She did it in front of other people. When somebody offered to share food, N would say, girl, you really don't need that. 2
The poster asked her to stop more than once. The answer was always the same: I'm just joking, you're too sensitive. The rest of the group laughed it off, and nobody said anything when it happened.
Then N developed a very large crush on a guy in the group. Last Friday they were all in the cafeteria, N was talking about a dress she wanted to wear to a college festival, somebody asked to see a picture, and the guy said it looked nice on her. N turned straight to the poster and said, in front of the whole table, "where do you think you'll buy a dress? I don't think they have your size in normal stores."
The table laughed, a little. The poster said: at least I can fill out a dress. You look like a highway with hair. Total silence. The crush looked away trying not to smile, and N did not speak for the rest of lunch.
That evening N texted her: disgusting person, never been so humiliated, you knew I was insecure about my chest and my body hair. The poster replied that perhaps now N understood how she felt. Then the crush texted the poster to say how satisfying it had been to watch, the poster mentioned it to N's roommate, and the roommate — in the middle of her own fight with N — inflated the whole thing and used it. The friend group is now in pieces, and some of them blame the poster for starting it.
5,692 upvotes and 1,014 comments, and the room is not unanimous. Most are on her side, a lot of them because of the line. A few made the harder argument: body shaming back is still body shaming, and she could have said what a rude thing to say and let the table sit in the silence.

The tent in the garage

His wife and their two older daughters were on a Girl Scout camping trip, thirty or forty minutes from the house, and he had stayed home with the two little ones. An hour after she left, and about fifteen minutes after both toddlers finally went down for a nap, she called. She had remembered everything except the tent, which was in the garage, and she needed it brought to her immediately. 3
He asked whether he could bring it in a few hours, when the children woke up. He asked for one hour, so they could sleep a little first, because waking them now would ruin the rest of the day. She said: bring it now, or I will go to Walmart and buy one.
So he found a tent on Walmart's website, sent her the link, and told her it would probably be cheaper than him wasting petrol on a ninety minute round trip. She went to Walmart. She bought the tent. And then she texted him that she was upset he had not helped her when she needed help.
861 upvotes and 260 comments, and the room is mostly on his side, with one very sharp observation running through it: if she could drive to Walmart, why could she not drive home and get the tent out of the garage? A few went the other way — the children would have fallen asleep in the car, and it would have been a shorter trip than the one she made to the shop.

The surprise invoice

She is twenty four, he is twenty six, and they have been together two years without living together. She had had a horrible few weeks at work, so they planned a quiet weekend at home. On the Friday he announced that he had booked a two night getaway: around six hundred dollars, on a hotel that does not refund. 4
She thanked him and meant it, and then said she did not want to go. She was exhausted, and she offered to cover her half of the dinners they had already planned. He said he had been trying to do something nice, that he had put time and money into the surprise, and that she had made his effort mean nothing. He went alone. And now he wants half the hotel, on the grounds that he would not have booked it if he had not been planning to take her.
178 upvotes and 75 comments, and this one really is split. The majority: you do not spend somebody else's money without asking them. Surprise, you owe me three hundred dollars — no. The minority is not stupid either: you could have relaxed at the hotel, and you should have gone.

Your group chat this morning

A night in a shed cost her the right to ask where a man lives. Two years of friendship cost her the right not to be the punchline. A tent cost two toddlers a nap. And a surprise cost three hundred dollars, charged after the fact.
None of those prices were written down anywhere. Every one of them was discovered afterwards.
So here is the question for your group chat today: what did you find out the price of, only after you had already paid?
