August 17-23 Warehouse Club Scorecard: Costco Has the Fresh Book, Sam's Has the Tech, BJ's Has the Gas
For Aug. 17-23, Costco is the best first stop for verified food and household savings, Sam's Club has the clearest electronics alerts, and BJ's is mainly a gas and short-dated paper stop.
Plan one Costco stop first, then divert to Sam's Club only for a named electronics model. Add BJ's for gas or the short paper-product window when the local trip works. The public book and retailer pages supplied this week's price evidence. Local warehouse tags and pump boards still decide the checkout price, especially for BJ's merchandise and gas. I found no auditable Aug. 18 in-warehouse photo confirmation to replace those public pages, so the article keeps unpaired rows out of the winner column.
Headline picks
- Best food buy: Costco Poppi. The 18-pack of 12-ounce cans is $14.99 after $5 off through Aug. 30, or about $0.83 per can. That is a clean sale price and a manageable pack for a two-person household that actually drinks it. Costco's 24-count Melona ice bars are also $3.70 off through Aug. 30, but a 24-pack of frozen treats is a freezer-space decision, not an automatic bargain. 1
- Best electronics price: Costco Galaxy Book4 Edge. The 14-inch touchscreen Copilot+ PC is $999.99 after $400 off through Aug. 30. It is a serious purchase, but the price cut is concrete. Costco also has a Bose Solo Soundbar Series II at $139.99 after $40 off through Aug. 23. 2
- Best Sam's tech alternative: Sam's Beats Pill. Sam's Club is advertising the Beats Pill at $99, down from $149.95, in a roundup published Aug. 17. The same roundup lists the Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headset at $39, down from $59, and the EcoFlow Trail 200 at $89, down from $119. These are useful targeted buys, but the public source does not give one common end date for every item. 3
- Best short-deadline household coupon: BJ's Puffs. BJ's Puffs Plus Lotion facial tissues are listed at $15.99 for 10 boxes, with $2 off through Aug. 19, making the advertised net $13.99. BJ's Bounty Select-a-Size paper towels are $29.99 for 12 rolls, with $8 off when buying two, also through Aug. 19. Those are active coupons, but they are different paper products and different pack economics; neither is a clean win over Costco's Charmin toilet paper. 4
- Best gas lead: BJ's, with a local-price warning. A dated chain benchmark put BJ's regular gas at $3.695 per gallon across 202 stations in 22 states on Aug. 18. That is $0.370 below AAA's same-day national regular average of $4.0654, but it is not a three-way local comparison. Use the BJ's figure to decide whether to open the app, then compare the actual Costco, Sam's, and BJ's pumps near you. 56
The week at a glance
| Category | Costco | Sam's Club | BJ's | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food | Poppi 18-pack, $14.99 after $5 off; Melona 24-count, $3.70 off. | No current public Instant Savings book verified for Aug. 17-23. | No BJ's food row with a verified Aug. 17-23 expiry; a dated Nathan's listing has no qualifying end date, so it is excluded. | Costco has the cleanest current food sale, but this is an alert rather than a two-chain winner. |
| Household | Charmin Ultra Soft, 30 rolls, $23.99 after $6 off; valid through Aug. 23. | The last public book ended Aug. 16. | Puffs and Bounty coupons run through Aug. 19. | No clean winner. Tissue, toilet paper, and paper towels are not interchangeable units. |
| Electronics | Galaxy Book4 Edge at $999.99 after $400 off; Bose Solo Soundbar at $139.99 after $40 off. | Beats Pill at $99; LG SC9S soundbar at $699, down from $999; HP ZBook Firefly at $1,999, down from $2,799. | No readable current item coupon row. | Costco for lower outlay; Sam's for specific tech. Models and specifications differ. |
| Travel | Costco Travel's August Spotlight includes vacation packages and cruises; book by Aug. 31. | Public travel hub exposes hotels, rental cars, theme parks, and attractions, but no comparable current member price in the retrieved page. | No current public voucher price verified. | Costco is the only actionable travel lead. It is not a three-way price comparison. |
| Gas | Local pump price required. | Local pump price required. | $3.695 chain average on Aug. 18. | BJ's is the benchmark lead, not a universal winner. |
Costco's current warehouse book is valid July 27 through Aug. 23, and its weekly page adds the Aug. 17 launch items. The most useful food numbers are the ones with both a sale price and a pack count: Poppi works out to roughly $0.83 per can, while Costco's 30-roll Charmin price works out to about $0.80 per roll. That calculation does not make toilet paper cheaper than a paper-towel coupon; it simply tells you what the package costs on its own terms. 12
BJ's current public deal list gives a useful expiration cliff. Puffs is $13.99 after the coupon through Aug. 19, and Bounty becomes $25.99 per 12-pack when the $8 savings is spread across a two-pack purchase. The Bounty math only works if you need 24 rolls and can store them. A one- or two-person household should treat that as a storage and usage decision, not as permission to buy two cases. The same caution applies to Costco's 30-roll Charmin pack and Costco's 24-count Melona freezer item. 4
The Sam's situation is the part that can make the "Costco is always cheapest" meme look smarter than it is. Sam's has real August electronics markdowns: the Beats Pill is $50.95 below its listed price, the LG SC9S is $300 below, and the HP ZBook is $800 below. But those are not the same models as Costco's Bose speaker, Bose soundbar, or Galaxy laptop. The correct conclusion is that Sam's can beat Costco for a shopper who wants one of those exact Sam's models, not that Sam's wins the electronics category. 3
Sam's public Instant Savings calendar is the bigger timing fact. The July 22-Aug. 16 book is marked confirmed, while the next Aug. 26-Sept. 20 book is listed as predicted. I carried none of the prior book's product prices into this week. Plus members can benefit from earlier access when a live Instant Savings book is active, but that advantage cannot turn an Aug. 16 expiration into an Aug. 18 deal. 7
Cherry-picker's route
Make Costco the single planned store this week. The current book has the broadest verified sale coverage and the longest useful window: Aug. 23 for the main warehouse book, Aug. 30 for Poppi, Melona, the Galaxy Book4 Edge, and several other Aug. 17 items.
Grab only what fits your actual household:
- Food: Poppi if you will finish 18 cans, or Melona only if your freezer has room. The 30-count Animal Crackers sale is a lunchbox quantity, not a sensible default for a small household. Costco lists the crackers at $3.20 off through Sept. 13. 1
- Electronics: Galaxy Book4 Edge at $999.99 after $400 off if the Snapdragon configuration and 14-inch screen fit your work. Otherwise, check the model-specific Sam's tech list before driving there. 23
- Household: Buy Costco Charmin or BJ's Puffs based on the product you actually use. If you choose BJ's Bounty, the coupon is a two-pack play and ends Aug. 19. 4
- Gas: Before leaving, check the local pump prices. BJ's chain average is a lead, not proof that the nearest BJ's beats your nearest Costco or Sam's. 5
Skip a second warehouse trip for travel unless you already have a destination in mind. Costco Travel has an August Spotlight with packages and cruises to Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and other destinations, with an Aug. 31 booking deadline. Its live offer page also lists a Disney Cruise Line deal with $150-$500 in instant savings and an Aug. 30 booking deadline. Sam's public travel page lists the shopping lanes but shows no comparable member price, and BJ's current voucher price is unavailable on its public pages. 89
Membership math
Use regular annual fees, not acquisition promotions, for a break-even decision. Costco Gold Star is $65 and Executive is $130, so the upgrade costs $65. At a 2% reward rate, Executive needs about $3,250 in eligible annual Costco or Costco Travel purchases to cover that upgrade. Costco excludes gas from the reward calculation, so fuel spending does not move that number. 10
Sam's Club is $60 for Club and $120 for Plus. Plus therefore adds $60 of annual cost. Its 2% Sam's Cash benefit reaches that amount at about $3,000 in qualifying annual spend, before considering Plus-only shipping, delivery, early shopping, pharmacy, optical, and tire benefits. Sam's is currently advertising a new-member promotion that prices the first year at $55 for Plus and $25 for Club through Sept. 30, but that is an acquisition offer, not the renewal math. 11
For BJ's, using $60 for Club and $110 for Club+ makes the upgrade difference $50. With 2% back on most in-club purchases, the simple reward break-even is about $2,500 in eligible annual BJ's spend. BJ's also says Club+ includes 2% back and its membership hub advertises average gas savings of 20 cents per gallon, but local pump volume and store availability still determine whether the upgrade pays off for you. 12
Next week's preview
The first cliff arrives before next Tuesday: BJ's Puffs and Bounty offers are scheduled to end Aug. 19. Costco's main book runs through Aug. 23, so Aug. 24 is the more important Costco transition date. Sam's next Instant Savings book is listed by KCL as predicted to begin Aug. 26, not as a current offer. The next scorecard should therefore recheck three things first: whether Sam's publishes the new book early for Plus members, whether Costco's Aug. 24 book supplies comparable food or paper rows, and whether BJ's exposes a readable coupon cycle instead of only a gas benchmark. 47
The practical verdict is narrower than a three-store sweep: shop Costco for the verified sale basket, shop Sam's for a named electronics deal, and use BJ's gas or the two-day paper-product window only when your local trip makes the arithmetic work. A deal that cannot survive pack-size math or an expiration check is not a winner.
