DeFi Week 45: TVL falls 4.2% on a $6.3B Binance breach, and Maple's $2.3B exit was a relabelling

DeFi TVL fell 4.17% to $82.31B in the week to 1 November and the ether-denominated book fell 1.81%, its first weekly decline in four weeks; a $6.3B breach at Binance drove the repricing, and Maple's $2.34B one-day 'exit' was a move between its own chain legs.

DeFi TVL Ranking & Protocol Anomalies
DeFi TVL Ranking & Protocol Anomalies@NeoDrop Official
DeFi's aggregate total value locked ended the window at $82.3113B, the daily snapshot for 1 November, down $3.5776B or 4.165% from $85.8889B on 26 October. 1
The window runs from 26 October to 2 November 2026, 10:00 GMT-5. TVL figures use the daily snapshots for 26 October and 1 November, and prices are daily closes read at 10:10 GMT-5 on 2 November.
Ether closed at $2,270.61, down 2.40% from $2,326.46. 2 The dollar book fell further than its own unit of account, so the same book measured in ether shrank: 36.9183M to 36.2507M ETH, down 1.81%. 1
That ends a three-week run. The ether-denominated book rose 2.96% in the week to 11 October, 2.42% in the week to 18 October and 1.43% in the week to 25 October. 1 Deposits had outrun the price decline for three weeks; this week they joined it.
The provider also restated its own recent history, and the correction is uneven. Last week's brief printed $89.3849B for 25 October; the series now returns $86.6141B, and 19 October reads $88.7608B against the $90.6060B printed then — both 3.1% lower. 1 Further back the cut is smaller: 18 October moved 2.0% and 12 October 1.7%. Every figure below takes both ends from the current series.

The breach repriced the book, and then deposits left

The Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75% to 4.00% on 28 October, a 10–2 vote. 14 Crypto markets took the pause without much movement, and ether closed 29 October at $2,357.52, its highest of the window. 2
Then Binance disclosed a security incident. The exchange put the impact at about $6.3 billion in client assets, said roughly $3 billion had been frozen on-chain, and pledged to cover losses from its Secure Asset Fund for Users. 7
Binance's first account described a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that gave an attacker access to a service container and the ability to submit unauthorised withdrawals. Co-CEO Richard Teng later told CNBC the attack was more complex than one engineer's permissions. 7
Chainalysis attributed the theft to the North Korean group it tracks as TraderTraitor; TRM Labs pointed to patterns it said match earlier North Korea-linked heists. 7 Tether's chief executive said the company froze more than $1.5 billion of its stablecoin, Circle's chief executive said it froze more than $800 million of USDC, and Ripple said it was freezing RLUSD tied to the incident. 7
Bitcoin fell 4.1% to $77,445.96 on Friday 30 October, ether 4.4% to $2,229.50 and BNB 6% to $701.18. 15 Binance suspended withdrawals, said deposits were unaffected, and expected withdrawal services to resume within 48 hours. 7
The dollar loss on 30 October overstates what holders lost in their own unit. Measured in ether, the book gave up 0.64% that day. 1 Priced in ether, the week cost 1.81%; priced in dollars, 4.17%.
Deposits left anyway, and the split is visible in the two largest Ethereum books. Aave V3's Ethereum supply fell from 5.9061M to 5.5791M ETH, a 5.54% decline, while Lido's fell 0.26%, essentially flat at about 9.64M ETH. 516
Lending lost the deposits and liquid staking held them. Aave V3's total fell $1.2972B that session alone, from $16.5221B to $14.9748B. 5

Hyperliquid L1 is the only chain in the top seven to gain, and HYPE's 11.93% rise accounts for the shape of it. Every Hyperliquid protocol on the gainer list moved with the token: Hyperliquid Earn +11.33%, Kinetiq kHYPE +13.76%, stHYPE +15.13%, Hyperliquid Spot Orderbook +23.51%. 3
Ethereum's 9.18% fall overstates what left the chain, because nearly half of it is a relabelling. On 27 to 28 October the Ethereum chain total dropped $2.164B, from $48.237B to $46.073B. 17 Maple's Ethereum leg dropped $2.3377B on the same date, and two new legs appeared beside it. The next section takes that apart.
Plasma's 10.94% and Monad's 9.51% falls are ordinary in shape: no single protocol step explains either, and both chains stayed small enough that one lending book moves them. Aave V3 on Monad fell from $351.2M to $264.6M, a 24.7% drop that carries most of the chain's loss. 5

The $2.3B exit that never happened

Maple's Ethereum leg ran $2,643.8M on 27 October and $306.2M on 28 October. Taken as a line, that is the largest one-day decline in DeFi this week, and it is wrong. 6
On the same day two legs appeared where there had been none: Bitcoin at $2,057.7M and Ripple at $298.7M. Maple's total, which is what the protocol controls, went from $2,631.3M on 26 October to $2,590.7M on 1 November, a fall of 1.5%. 6
The dollars changed columns. Anyone reading the Ethereum leg alone would conclude that $2.3B left a lending protocol in a day, and would be reading a chain attribution.
That failure mode has company this week. LayerZero V2 tops the dollar ranking at +$257.6M, and the entire move sits in its Polygon leg, which ran $9,606.2M, $9,128.2M, $9,378.0M, $8,899.1M, $8,490.2M, $9,207.5M and $10,082.2M across the seven days. 31 Polygon's own chain total fell $47.3M over the same period. 27
Uniswap V4 has a similar hole in its total. The protocol fell $385.3M, and $277.6M of it landed in one session on 27 October, when the leg the feed labels Binance went from $309.9M to $32.3M. 32 Uniswap V3's Binance-labelled leg stayed near $43M all week, so nothing picked the money up. 33
The Aerodrome pair still needs its two entries added together. aerodrome-slipstream fell from $111.1M to $93.8M while aero-slipstream rose from $87.4M to $116.0M. 3435 Combined, the pair went from $198.5M to $209.8M, a gain of $11.3M.
A smaller version of the same problem sits in Morpho Blue, whose Morph-chain leg went from $67.1M to $2.6M on 28 October. 36

The ether-terms column changes how four of those rows read. Lido and SSV Network shed $971.7M between them and both fell less than 1% in ether terms. Aave V3 and Sky Lending fell 5.54% and 4.52% in ether terms, and that figure is money leaving a credit market.
The same test lifts Spark Savings and Grove Finance to the front of the week's real outflows. Spark's Ethereum book fell from $1,166.8M to $914.2M, 19.72% in ether terms, and $178.5M of that arrived in the single session of 29 October. 41 Grove's Ethereum leg fell 37.14% in ether terms over the same days.

What the largest moves were, and what nobody has explained

Anemoy Capital's decline arrived in three daily steps. The fund's total went $330.5M, $283.3M, $237.9M, $102.6M across 27 to 30 October, with the Ethereum leg moving from $324.6M to $97.0M and the Base leg holding at $5.6M. 42
A $228M exit spread over three sessions is the shape of a fund's book being returned. The balances stand as reported; the cause is unresolved.
Grove Finance's Ethereum leg fell every day of the week, from $704.7M to $416.2M by 30 October and $432.3M by 1 November, while its Base leg rose from $430.4M to $495.7M. 43 That is a $272.4M Ethereum decline with a $65.3M Base gain beside it, and the Base gain covers under a quarter of it. The cause is unresolved.
Spark Savings is the third balance in this group. Its Ethereum book fell $178.5M on 29 October and a further $37.1M on 31 October, with no announcement in the window accounting for either step. 41
Uniswap V4's Binance-labelled leg and LayerZero V2's Polygon leg remain what they were last week: figures that move in one-day jumps no protocol announcement describes. Both need their caveat beside them in any ranking.
Aave V3 and Sky Lending need no explanation of that kind. Their declines arrive on 30 October, match the session's ether move in the right proportion, and are larger than it by a few points, which is what a leveraged book does when collateral prices fall.

Security: $6.3 billion left Binance, and $6.95 million left DeFi

Binance's breach is the largest theft in the industry's history, and the failure sat in an exchange's withdrawal infrastructure. Binance suspended withdrawals while it rebuilt withdrawal security and revoked the affected address authorisations, and said deposits kept operating. 7
The DeFi-native incidents in the same window carry quantified losses of $6,950,035 across seven protocols. Four more have no single dollar figure: b14g's loss is denominated in CORE, Hifi's is disputed, Zilliqa's is undisclosed, and Myriad voided its markets before any loss settled. 44

Three of the eleven protocol incidents ran through permissions: Hifi's governance takeover, Troves' legacy contract and Myriad's leaked key. Three ran through someone else's software: Polymarket's monitoring service, Predict Fun's documentation site and the third-party module inside Bloom's trading infrastructure.
Polymarket resumed trading after suspending the international platform, and had refunded 95% of affected wallets by Friday; more than 700 accounts lost funds. 45
One follow-up from last week's brief: rekt.news reported on 28 October that Initia's mint traced to a stale script cache in its MoveVM, with forged balances moving out over LayerZero and CCTP and about $2.73M of real reserves paid before the halt. 47 The Initia Foundation has approved funding to restore backing.

Governance: Balancer writes the wind-down into code, and Hifi loses its DAO

Fifty-eight proposals closed on Snapshot in the window. 48 The consequential one is Balancer's BIP-936, which passed on 27 October with 6,306,479 FOR, no votes against, thirty voters and the 5,000,000 quorum met. 8
BIP-936 is the mechanical half of the shutdown BIP-928 approved in early October. Its specs have the DAO multisig disable the official Balancer V2 pool factories that support disabling, and grant itself pause rights through the AuthorizerAdaptorEntrypoint with where=0x0, with the core team performing the matching actions from its multisig on every other chain. 8
Two smaller Balancer votes passed alongside it: BIP-934 burns the DAO's 10 million BEETS on Sonic, worth about $39,000, and BIP-935 claims leftover AAVE rewards, 6,609,797 FOR and none against. 49
Aave closed three ARFCs, two on 31 October and one on 26 October. Aave V3.8 passed 381,439 FOR with none against across 88 voters; Aave V4 deployment on Tempo passed with 381,423 FOR of 381,435 cast; and onboarding mWIN, the Midas-issued, Wellington-managed fixed-income portfolio, to Aave Horizon passed 383,302 FOR with none against across 82 voters. 505152
The mWIN vote matters most for lending exposure. The proposal describes a tokenised multi-sector fixed-income portfolio used as collateral for leveraged carry on Horizon, and says mWIN reached $15M in TVL within days of launch. 52
CoW DAO's CIP-90 passed 39,299,828 FOR to 1 AGAINST, 36 voters, quorum of 35,000,000 met. It replaces the six-month fee-experimentation renewals with a standing mandate for the core team to set fee policy within set ranges. 53
Spark passed three Spark Liquidity Layer items on 29 October, each with about 500 million votes: onboarding OUSD mint and redeem, onboarding the Uniswap v4 OUSD/USDS pool, and activating the Base Diamond PAU with a CCTP V2 facet. 5455
Grove raised the deposit rate limit on the Grove x Steakhouse USDC Morpho Vault v2 on both Ethereum and Base, 96,251,572 votes for and none against on each. 56 Steakhouse Financial's book gained $137.3M in the same week, $155.5M of it on Base.
StakeDAO's SDGP-80 passed 6,493,366 FOR with none against, mandating the Stake DAO Association to engage one or more curation service providers under a stated eligibility and compensation framework; SDGP-78, a 4% vlSDT revenue share for liquid lockers, failed with every vote against. 5758
Hifi Finance is the governance failure of the week. An attacker acquired HIFI, cast four coordinated votes shortly before the window closed and passed proposal 21, which would upgrade the BalanceSheet contract so that existing collateral could be treated as untracked and transferred to an attacker-controlled Safe, and would mint 25 million HIFI. 44
Hifi's own update on 30 October states the position plainly: HIFI holders are no longer in control of the protocol, its governance contracts or the token supply, the imposed timelock was expiring, and the attacker would likely sweep the last $14,000 of WETH from the balance sheet while retaining the ability to push arbitrary code to it. 59
The loss figures differ by a factor of fifty. The team estimated about $20,000 and said the DAO has funds to compensate affected users; analyst Spreek put collateral losses near $1 million. 46 Hifi also said the app front end had been redirected away from the compromised contract. 59
For anyone holding a Hifi DSProxy, Hifi published the affected addresses and told owners to move to a new wallet, because a future code push could target outstanding WETH approvals. 59

Yield: the thousand-percent club emptied

At $500,000 of TVL or more, exactly one pool on the screen still shows 1,000% or better: Aerodrome's VIRTUAL-DEUS on Base at 15,089.75%, all of it rewards, on $0.58M. 9 A week ago there were three such pools; two weeks ago, seventeen.
Further down the screen, seven pools clear 500% and nine clear 200%, all at that $500,000 floor. 9 The long tail of four- and five-figure APYs that has led this section since September is gone.
What replaced it is a set of pools printing zero. Aerodrome Slipstream's USDC-PROS shows 0.00% against a 30-day mean of 71,161.50%; CTR-USDC shows 0.04% against 64,991.42%; USDC-SNDKC shows 0.02% against 1,711.05%. 9
Swell's restaking tokens went the same way: rswETH prints 0.00% at $26.3M against a 30-day mean of 1,355.78%, and swETH 0.00% at $25.5M against 68.71%. 9 Those tokens carry an accumulated repricing that showed up as APY for two weeks and now does not.
A pool whose trailing mean is 60,000% and whose current rate is zero earned its fees in one window, and the window has closed. Anyone who treated the earlier number as run-rate income was reading the fee spike.
The deep, fee-led pools kept paying, and all of them sit below their own 30-day means: Uniswap V3's WETH-USDC on Base at 30.12% on $151.4M against a mean of 52.93%, Orca's SOL-USDC at 29.99% on $25.6M against 49.59%, Uniswap V3's WETH-USDT on Ethereum at 22.22% on $79.5M against 46.05%, and WETH-USDC on Arbitrum at 13.61% on $36.5M against 22.09%. 9
Stablecoin pools above $10M still lead with Axis SUSDX at 15.57% on $53.7M, Apyx APXUSD at 13.13% on $151.2M and Maple's USDG at 4.84% on $722.5M. 9

What the next window will show

Three things decide whether this week reads as a repricing or a withdrawal cycle. The first is Binance's withdrawal resumption and how much of the frozen $3B reaches holders. 7
The second is whether Aave V3's Ethereum book and Spark Savings keep shedding ether. A single down week in the ether-denominated series after three up weeks is a turn; a second would be a trend.
The third is Balancer. BIP-936 authorises the pause machinery, and rekt.news reported on 14 October that the schedule puts pools into withdrawals-only from 30 October, with redemptions opening in May 2027 at an estimated $0.158 per BAL. 860 Whether the remaining Balancer TVL leaves quietly in the next few weeks is a test of how the first orderly wind-down of a major DEX actually runs.
On the anomaly side, three balances to re-read next Monday: Anemoy Capital's fund at $102.7M, Grove Finance's Ethereum leg at $432.3M and Spark Savings' Ethereum book at $914.2M. If any continues to fall at the same daily rate, the cause will matter more than the price did this week.
