An 1892 water tower is now an 87-foot California beach house you can rent

A converted 1892 railway water tower in Seal Beach, California, is a four-story Airbnb with an elevator, a bedroom hidden behind a bookshelf and a train set looping through the living-room ceiling, at a little over $1,000 a night and on a four-review record.

In 1892, crews raised this tower along with others on the Southern California coast, filling the boilers of steam locomotives on the run between Santa Barbara and San Diego. It held water, outlived the steam engines, survived a vote to demolish it, and was lifted off its stilts and moved down the street by crane. Today the octagonal building stands 87 feet above Surfside, a gated strip of beach inside Seal Beach, and all four of its floors are a house you can book. 12

What the building actually is

Southern Pacific rebuilt the tower in termite-resistant redwood, and it fed the railway for about half a century. Diesel retired the coastal water towers through the 1900s, and by the 1970s this one had become a termite-ridden, graffiti-covered landmark. Seal Beach voted to demolish it in 1980. George Armstrong, a math professor at Long Beach, produced a plan to save it instead: in 1984 a crane lifted the tower off its stilts and set it down at 1 Anderson Street, and by 1985 it was a working house. 14
The house spreads 2,828 square feet over four stories, four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. An elevator climbs from the ground floor to the deck level, where the kitchen and the living room sit behind windows that open outward; the two master bedrooms and the top-floor rotunda sit above it, reached by a spiral staircase. The top floor is ringed with glass and capped by a stained-glass cupola. 15

The oddities are structural. A guest room sits behind a bookshelf on the ground floor. A model train circles the redwood rafters. The foyer holds a cascading water feature and a wall of vintage tools dug up in the 1940s. The wraparound deck carries Surfside's live-streamed surf cam. Airbnb's listing calls the house the second-tallest single-family residence in the country; SFGate reported that the 124-foot Falcon Nest in Prescott, Arizona, stands taller. 125

What guests say

Duyen-Thi, visiting from New York for one night in September 2026, went looking for something out of the box and found it overhead:
"The water tower house just absolutely dropped my jaw...all 80+ feet down! Between the mascots hidden throughout the house to the toy train running the perimeter of the living room, this place delivered on old school charm, whimsy, & weird history." 1
Tyler, staying a few nights the same month, found the host had done more than hand over keys: "the added accommodations without any request. Not to mention the gift basket and the cake and ice cream that she put in the refrigerator to really personalize the stay!" 1
Christopher, from Las Vegas, brought his children in July 2026 and wrote that "the Water Tower House was such a unique and special home for my family." Every review on the listing so far is five stars, and four reviews make a thin record to spend over $1,000 a night against. 1

What it costs, and the rules that come with it

The nightly rate puts this stay in trophy-home territory. A five-night booking ran just over $5,000 in 2025, which works out to a little over $1,000 a night, and real-estate records show the building itself changed hands for $4.6 million in January 2026, after a 2025 listing at $5.5 million. 367
Then come the conditions a tower imposes. The host asks for a government photo ID before confirming a reservation, and the person booking has to be at least 30 and present for the whole stay. There is no air conditioning; the ocean breeze and supplied fans do that work. Anyone who cannot manage a spiral staircase sleeps on the lower floors, because the master bedrooms and the rotunda sit above it. Seal Beach's Good Neighbor Policy enforces quiet hours from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and the listing warns that construction, traffic, beachgoers and aircraft noise are ordinary here and will not earn a refund. Check-in opens at 4 p.m., checkout closes at 10 a.m., and eight guests is the ceiling. 1
What you are buying is the building: a piece of 19th-century railway infrastructure that ended up as a beach house with an elevator, a hidden room and a train set in the ceiling. Open the listing on Airbnb to check your dates and the current quote.
