AP Psych Zero: How to Read a Data Set
A single unusually high score can make an average tell a very different story from the one most people in the group are living. How do you know which summary of the data deserves your attention?

AP Psych Zero: How to Read a Data Set
This episode turns the statistics in AP Psychology data questions into a sequence you can actually use: inspect the data, describe the center, describe the spread, read the shape, and only then state a conclusion.
What you will learn
- How to calculate and interpret the mean, median, and mode.
- Why an outlier can pull the mean away from the typical score.
- How the range and standard deviation describe variability.
- How to recognize a normal, skewed, or bimodal distribution.
- Why a percentile rank describes relative position, not percent correct.
- How to apply the sequence to a short AP-style practice check.
Study check
Use the episode's example data set: 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 20.
- Which measure of center is most resistant to the score of 20?
- Is the distribution positively or negatively skewed? What feature tells you?
- Which measure describes the typical distance of scores from the mean?
- Why is an 85th-percentile score not the same as getting 85 percent of questions correct?
The answer pattern is: median; positive skew because the tail extends toward the larger value; standard deviation; and percentile rank describes position within a comparison group rather than accuracy on the task.
Scope and sources
The College Board's AP Psychology course framework identifies Data Interpretation as a science practice and asks students to calculate and interpret measures of central tendency, variation, and percentile rank. It specifically names mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, normal curves, skewness, and bimodal distributions. 1
The College Board course page describes AP Psychology as a course that applies research methods and data interpretation to evaluate claims and communicate evidence. 2
This episode is a study aid. Use your teacher's current materials and the current College Board framework for course-specific assignments and exam details.
