Human resources managers connect an organization’s leadership, managers, and workforce. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the role as planning, coordinating, and directing an organization’s administrative HR functions, while O*NET adds staffing, labor relations, compensation, conflict resolution, and team coordination. 1 2

The ladder shown here is a common pattern, not a universal promotion rule: assistant or coordinator, specialist or generalist, manager, director, then VP or chief human resources officer. Titles and order vary with company size. 3 The BLS also notes that some HR managers begin as human resources specialists or labor relations specialists. 1
