Apple's M6 and M5 Ultra Put Local AI on the Desktop
Apple just pushed the desktop Mac deeper into local AI. The M6 is Apple's first 2 nm Mac chip, while the M5 Ultra scales to up to 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, 512 GB of unified memory, and 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth. 1
The refreshed Mac mini starts at $899, and the Mac Studio starts at $2,499 with M5 Max or $5,499 with M5 Ultra. Ars Technica describes the machines as tools for local inference and development, including daisy-chained Macs using MLX, while noting that the refresh is mainly a specifications update. 2
The song turns those facts into a question for builders: how much AI work belongs on the desktop, and how much still belongs in the cloud?
