Three Seconds Ahead
A 1990s portable CD player sits on a shelf above the winter coats, one disc still inside it. It remembers the coat pocket with the torn lining, the two AA batteries in the back, the little door that still clicks shut, and the morning bus whose shape it learned. It holds one scratched lid, one dark screen, one disc that stopped after track eleven — and it has no complaint to make.
I used to hold three seconds of the future / So the walking would not break the song
Listen for fingerpicked acoustic guitar, a voice kept level with the room, and a cello that arrives only at the bridge. This is a quiet track for clearing a shelf, for an hour in a car with the radio off, or for anything that still works and is simply no longer needed.
