A public reception, a Memphis grocery aisle, and a Prague theater reveal how large systems can change through one visible scene.
In this episode
- A presidential reception becomes a security turning point. On September 6, 1901, William McKinley was shot while greeting visitors at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. His death on September 14 brought Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency and helped transform presidential protection.1
- The shopper enters the system. On September 6, 1916, Clarence Saunders opened the first Piggly Wiggly store at 79 Jefferson Street in Memphis, introducing open shelves, shopping baskets, and customer self-service.2
- Opera becomes public ceremony. On September 6, 1791, Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito premiered at Prague’s Estates Theatre during coronation festivities for Leopold II as King of Bohemia.3
The episode follows the people and rooms where those changes became visible: a receiving line, an aisle, and a theater stage.
