Sam's wins on price across a standard grocery basket. Allrecipes ran a head-to-head comparison across 10 items at Dallas locations and found Sam's cheapest in six of them — including olive oil ($17.98/2 liters vs. BJ's $24.99), eggs ($1.69/dozen), and ground beef ($5.76/lb). 7 BJ's was most expensive across the entire basket.

Costco counters with depth on fresh protein. The June 22–28 Weekly Insider Deals bring Kirkland Signature boneless skinless chicken breast to $2.79/lb (flagged as a new low price) and KS chicken tenderloins at $2.99/lb. 5 Bulk flag: the chicken comes in packs typically 6–8 lbs. One caveat on Costco gas: the chain has a documented practice of dropping pump prices slower than competitors when wholesale costs fall — a strategy former CFO Richard Galanti described as giving Costco "an ability to make a little more and still be the most competitive." 15 In a declining market like right now, BJ's and Sam's are more likely to pass the drop through faster.

Sam's Club raised its membership fees on May 1, 2026 (Club $50→$60, Plus $110→$120) — the first increase in five years. 16 BJ's raised fees on January 1, 2025 (Club $55→$60, Club+ $110→$120). 17 Costco has held its current price since September 2024.

The upgrade math is simple: all three upgrade tiers pay 2% back on in-store spending, so the extra ~$60 annual cost recovers when you spend ~$3,000/year at that chain. Costco's Executive tier has a higher cashback ceiling ($1,250/yr vs. Sam's $750/yr), but that cap becomes meaningful only if you're spending well over $10,000/yr at Costco. Most households don't. 17
