Zverev takes No. 1 from Sinner, Alcaraz wins Vienna, and Wawrinka retires in Basel

Alcaraz wins Vienna without dropping a set as Zverev replaces Sinner at No. 1, Vacherot takes Basel and Wawrinka bows out, Shnaider wins Tokyo after Rybakina's withdrawal, and Dart claims a first title at 30.

Carlos Alcaraz won the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Sunday, beating Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 in 97 minutes 1.
The title is his fourth of 2026, a season in which he missed five months with a wrist injury. He is 16-0 at ATP 500 events this year, and he has now won 25 matches in a row at that level 12.
Alexander Zverev is the new world No. 1. The rankings published on Monday put him 100 points clear of Jannik Sinner, who did not play last week 23.
The swap happened because the points from the 2025 Paris Masters came off the table on Monday, a week earlier than usual: this year's Paris tournament starts on 2 November, and Sinner won the 2025 edition 4.
This issue covers 26 October to 1 November 2026 and closes at Monday's 10:00 UTC cutoff. Four tour-level titles were decided inside it, at two ATP 500s, a WTA 500 and a WTA 250, and all four finals were played on Sunday.
Stan Wawrinka's career ended in Basel on Tuesday, beaten 7-5, 7-6(2) by Jiri Lehecka in the first round 5.

Erste Bank Open (ATP 500): five matches, no sets dropped

Vienna ran from 26 October to 1 November at the Wiener Stadthalle, its 52nd edition, on indoor hard courts with a 32-player draw and €2,797,985 in prize money 910.
Alcaraz broke De Minaur in the opening game of the final and led by a double break before the first set was half done 1.
The win is his seventh in a row against De Minaur, and his fifth match of the week in straight sets 1.
De Minaur reached the final by beating top seed Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in two hours 30 minutes, in a deciding set in which neither player created a break point 210.
For Zverev it was his first match since he was confirmed as the incoming No. 1, and it ended in defeat 2.
Third seed Daniil Medvedev lost the other semifinal to Alcaraz 6-4, 7-6(2). Medvedev had qualified for the ATP Finals the day before 1011.
The draw had thinned before the semifinals. Sixth seed Frances Tiafoe lost his opening match to Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(6), 7-5, and Andrey Rublev went out to Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-2 10.
Fourth seed Flavio Cobolli retired in the round of 16 against Matteo Berrettini at 5-2 in the first set, with a muscle problem in his left thigh. Tests found a minor strain, and Cobolli intends to play Paris 1011.
Eighth seed Jakub Mensik lost at the same stage to qualifier Adrian Mannarino, 6-4, 7-5 10.

Swiss Indoors (ATP 500): a second title, and a career's last match

Basel ran from 26 October to 1 November at the St. Jakobshalle, its 55th edition, on indoor hard courts with a 32-player draw and €2,584,155 in prize money 1213.
Valentin Vacherot, unseeded, beat eighth seed Lehecka 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, taking the title when Lehecka's two-handed backhand landed out 9.
It is the second tour-level title of his career. The first was the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he came through qualifying 9.
His week included a three-set win over third seed Rafael Jódar in the round of 16, another over Holger Rune in the quarterfinal, and a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over sixth seed Taylor Fritz in the semifinal 13.
The top two seeds went out early. Ben Shelton lost in the round of 16 to Swiss wild card Kym 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(1), and second seed Arthur Fils retired in the quarterfinal against Fritz after losing the opening set 6-2 and trailing 2-0 13.
Fourth seed Novak Djokovic lost in the round of 16 to Jan-Lennard Struff, 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-6(5) 13.
Wawrinka's farewell ran alongside all of it. He was honoured at a ceremony on the Monday night and played his last tour-level match the next day, at 41 5.
He won the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open, reached No. 3 in the world and spent 267 weeks in the top 10 5.
His career lasted 23 years and 985 matches. "At some point you have to close the book," he said afterwards 5.

Toray Pan Pacific Open (WTA 500): the top seed leaves, the third seed wins

Tokyo ran from 26 October to 1 November at the Ariake Coliseum on outdoor hard courts, with $1,206,446 in prize money 1415.
Elena Rybakina withdrew from her quarterfinal on Friday with inflammation and pain in her neck, and Leylah Fernandez advanced with a walkover 16.
Earlier in the same week Rybakina had secured the WTA year-end No. 1 ranking for the first time, after a season in which she won two Grand Slam titles 16.
Diana Shnaider, seeded third, took the title instead, beating Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours 18 minutes 12.
Shnaider led 6-4, 4-0 and then lost seven of the next eight games. She saved three break points to hold for 1-1 in the decider, broke in the fifth game and closed with four straight games 12.
It is her first title of the season and the sixth of her career, and her third at WTA 500 level. She has now won her last six finals 12.
The 500 points lift her two places to a career-high No. 11 1217.
Fernandez had reached the Ningbo final seven days earlier. Tokyo was her second final in a row, and only her fifth defeat in 21 matches 12.
Kamilla Rakhimova, a lucky loser, reached her first WTA 500 semifinal by beating Maya Joint 7-5, 5-7, 6-1, then lost to Fernandez 1416.
Seventh seed Naomi Osaka lost in the round of 16 to Mia Pohankova, and eighth seed Alexandra Eala lost her quarterfinal to Shnaider in three sets 14.

Guangzhou Open (WTA 250): a first title at 30

Guangzhou ran from 26 October to 1 November on hard courts, with $283,347 in prize money 18.
Harriet Dart, a qualifier ranked No. 115 and the British No. 5, came from a set down to beat fourth seed Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 16.
It is her first WTA title, at 30. She won four of her seven matches in Guangzhou after losing the first set 16.
The points take her back inside the top 100, which brings direct entry into the Australian Open in January 16.
Tagger is 18 and ranked No. 53. She had beaten Venus Williams on her way to the final 16.
Top seed Daria Snigur lost her opening match to Anna Bondar 6-4, 6-2, and second seed Janice Tjen lost in the round of 16 to Dart 18.

A dash means the position is unchanged from the table published on 26 October, and movement is measured against that table.
Both men at the top lost points in the same week: Sinner shed 1,000 when his Paris title left the 52-week window, and Zverev 200 for the equivalent week 34.
Auger-Aliassime, seventh a week ago, falls six places to No. 13 on 2,875 points 3.
Jódar reaches No. 10, the highest ranking of his career, a week after his Shanghai final and a round of 16 in Basel where he held a break in the deciding set 311.
Fils, Tiafoe and De Minaur each move up one place. Lehecka's run to the Basel final takes him up six to No. 15, and Vacherot's title puts him at No. 27 3.

Behind them, Fernandez's second straight final takes her up five places to No. 18, and Rakhimova's Tokyo semifinal lifts her 22 places to No. 44. Maja Chwalinska slips one place to No. 12 17.

The week ahead: 2–8 November

The Rolex Paris Masters runs from 2 to 8 November at La Défense Arena in Nanterre, on indoor hard courts, with a 56-player draw and €6,309,095 in prize money 419.
Zverev is the top seed and Alcaraz the second. Sinner, ranked No. 2 but out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, is missing from the draw 411.
The top eight seeds start in the second round. Djokovic, seeded 10th, opens against Vacherot, the Basel champion, and Alcaraz's first match is against Lehecka or Alex Michelsen 14.
Four places at the ATP Finals are still open, with 1,000 points going to the Paris champion 11.
Medvedev took the fifth place on Friday. Zverev, Alcaraz and Shelton were already in, and Sinner has qualified on points but will not play, so the player who finishes ninth in the Race takes the last spot 11.
Cobolli (3,690), Fils (3,525), Tiafoe (3,380) and Jódar (3,209) hold the four places on Race points. De Minaur, Djokovic and Fritz are close enough that a run in Paris rearranges the field 11.
On the women's side, both WTA events this week are 250s: the Chennai Open at the SDAT Stadium and the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, each with $283,347 in prize money and both running 2–8 November 20212223.
Cirstea is the top seed in Hong Kong and Eala the second 23.
The WTA Finals begin on Sunday 8 November at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with eight singles players and $15,500,000 in prize money 24.
Rybakina arrives as the year-end No. 1 and the reigning champion, nine days after she withdrew in Tokyo with the neck injury 1624.
