Champions League play-off field set as La Liga starts and the Premier League waits
A 10-match Champions League qualifying night set the play-off bracket, while La Liga opened with four completed fixtures and the Premier League remained on the starting line.
The club season has finally started moving, but not everywhere at once. The 10 Champions League third qualifying-round return legs on 11 August settled the play-off field, La Liga supplied its first four completed matches, and the Premier League remained a week away from its opening fixture. This is the state of the three competitions at the Monday 17 August 2026, 10:00 UTC cutoff.
The week at a glance
| Competition | What happened | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Champions League qualifying | All 10 third-round second legs were played on 11 August; Bodo/Glimt and NEC needed extra time. 1 | Seven play-off ties are now set. The winners enter the league phase; the losers continue in the Europa League. 2 |
| La Liga | Alaves, Sevilla, Racing Santander, Villarreal, Espanyol and Levante were involved in four completed opening-weekend matches. 34 | Alaves, Espanyol and Sevilla have three points; Racing Santander and Villarreal have one. The table is still a partial snapshot because 15 clubs have not played in the completed matches covered here. |
| Premier League | No league match fell inside this window. The first listed fixture was Arsenal v Coventry City on Friday 21 August. 5 | There is no English table movement to analyze yet. |
Champions League qualifying: the bracket is set
The return-leg scoreboard looks straightforward until the details are separated. Four ties were decided by a single goal on the night, two went beyond 90 minutes, and the most important changes came from aggregate swings rather than from the largest individual scorelines.
| Tie | Second leg | Aggregate and outcome | Match detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kairat Almaty v Levski Sofia | 0-1 | Levski Sofia won 2-0 on aggregate | Levski completed a second 1-0 win. 1 |
| Sabah v AGF Aarhus | 4-0 | Sabah won 5-2 on aggregate | Sabah scored four unanswered goals through four different players in the home leg. 12 |
| Kauno Zalgiris v Dinamo Zagreb | 1-2 | Dinamo Zagreb won 7-1 on aggregate | Dinamo's 5-0 first-leg lead made this the least uncertain tie, even though Kauno scored at home. 1 |
| Crvena zvezda v Hapoel Be'er Sheva | 0-2 | Hapoel Be'er Sheva won 3-0 on aggregate | Hapoel kept a clean sheet in both legs and removed one of the round's more established names. 1 |
| Slovan Bratislava v Mjallby | 2-0 | Slovan Bratislava won 4-1 on aggregate | Slovan converted its first-leg advantage into a comfortable home win. 1 |
| Celje v Ararat-Armenia | 2-0 | Celje won 3-2 on aggregate | Celje overturned the first-leg deficit without needing extra time. 1 |
| Bodo/Glimt v Union Saint-Gilloise | 3-2 after extra time | Bodo/Glimt won 6-5 on aggregate | Bodo's Andreas Helmersen scored in extra time; the match also ended with red cards for Raul Florucz and Adem Zorgane. 1 |
| NEC v Olympiacos | 2-1 after extra time | NEC won 2-1 on aggregate | The tie stayed scoreless after the first leg, then NEC used extra time after Olympiacos received a red card in the 80th minute. 2 |
| Sturm Graz v Fenerbahce | 0-1 | Fenerbahce won 3-0 on aggregate | Fenerbahce controlled the tie after winning both legs. 1 |
| Lyon v Sparta Prague | 3-0 | Lyon won 4-2 on aggregate | Sparta's 34th-minute red card made Lyon's comeback route much easier. 2 |
Four results that changed the round
Sabah produced the clearest reversal. AGF's 2-1 first-leg win gave the Danish side the advantage, but Sabah's 4-0 response turned a narrow deficit into a 5-2 aggregate win. The important point is not just the margin: four different Sabah players scored, so this was a collective collapse rather than a single-player rescue job. The result sends Sabah into a play-off against Hapoel Be'er Sheva. 2
Hapoel Be'er Sheva supplied the round's biggest away statement. A 2-0 win in Belgrade made the aggregate score 3-0 and ended Crvena zvezda's run. The clean-sheet sequence matters because the tie never gave the Serbian side a route back after Hapoel took the first-leg lead. 2
Extra time separated two very different contests. Bodo/Glimt and Union traded a 3-2 extra-time result in a tie that finished 6-5 on aggregate, while NEC needed extra time to beat Olympiacos 2-1 after the first leg had ended 0-0. In both matches, the 30 additional minutes were not a footnote: they decided who advanced. 12
Lyon turned a 2-1 first-leg loss into a 4-2 aggregate win. The 3-0 home victory was already enough to overturn the deficit, and Sparta's red card in the 34th minute removed the possibility of a long defensive hold. Lyon now meets Fenerbahce in the league path. 2
The play-off route
The next round has seven two-legged ties. The first legs are scheduled for 18 and 19 August; the second legs follow on 25 and 26 August. The aggregate winners take the final seven places in the league-phase draw, while the defeated teams continue in the Europa League. 2
| First leg | Path |
|---|---|
| Levski Sofia v AEK Athens; Dinamo Zagreb v Viking | Champions path |
| Hapoel Be'er Sheva v Sabah; Celtic v LASK; Slovan Bratislava v Celje | Champions path |
| Fenerbahce v Lyon; NEC v Bodo/Glimt | League path |
The most informative tie is Fenerbahce v Lyon: one side has already won both third-round legs, while the other just erased a first-leg deficit. Sabah v Hapoel is the other immediate test of whether Sabah's four-goal explosion was a turning point or simply one exceptional night.
La Liga: fast starts, unfinished table
The opening weekend had produced four completed matches by the cutoff. That is enough to identify the early winners, but not enough to treat the standings as a real title or relegation signal.
| Match | Result and scorers | Turning point |
|---|---|---|
| Alaves v Getafe | Alaves 3-0. Nahuel Tenaglia 73' (assist: Mariano Diaz); Mariano Diaz 90+1'; Mikel Rodriguez 90+4' (assist: Mariano Diaz). 6 | Getafe's Kiko Femenia was sent off after 42 minutes. Alaves then turned a narrow lead into a three-goal finish. 6 |
| Sevilla v Rayo Vallecano | Sevilla 2-1. Alvaro Garcia 4'; Jon Guridi 52' penalty; Peque Fernandez 90+7' penalty. 7 | Sevilla survived a poor start, then won it after Kike Salas was sent off in the 88th minute. 7 |
| Racing Santander v Villarreal | 2-2. Andres Martin 21' penalty; Sergio Martinez 34'; Pape Gueye 45'; Nicolas Pepe 45+ minutes. 8 | Racing led 2-0 before Villarreal scored twice before half-time. 8 |
| Espanyol v Levante | Espanyol 3-0. Roberto Fernandez 5' and 40'; Tyrhys Dolan 80'. The report credits Edu Exposito's free kick, Javi Hernandez and Rafa Bauza in the build-up to the goals. 8 | VAR confirmed Espanyol's opener, and Levante could not turn second-half possession into a goal. 8 |
What the provisional table says
| Club | Played | Record | Goal difference | Points | Change from pre-season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alaves | 1 | 1-0-0 | +3 | 3 | New competitive season |
| Espanyol | 1 | 1-0-0 | +3 | 3 | New competitive season |
| Sevilla | 1 | 1-0-0 | +1 | 3 | New competitive season |
| Racing Santander | 1 | 0-1-0 | 0 | 1 | New competitive season |
| Villarreal | 1 | 0-1-0 | 0 | 1 | New competitive season |
The other 15 clubs had not appeared in a completed match in the evidence available by the cutoff. That makes the useful conclusion narrower than "Alaves lead the title race": three clubs have won their first match, two have drawn, and the remaining teams still have to create the table's first meaningful separation. The goal difference belongs to the opening weekend, not yet to a season-long trend. 34
Premier League: the table stays frozen
There was no Premier League result to summarize in this seven-day window. The first fixture on the BBC's 21 August schedule was Arsenal v Coventry City, so the English table could not move before this issue's cutoff. That is not a lack of news so much as a calendar fact: the World Cup-delayed season starts later than the Spanish campaign and the Champions League qualifying rounds. 5
For this channel, the distinction matters. Pre-season friendlies may shape selection and injury stories, but they do not create Premier League points. The meaningful English storyline therefore belongs to next week's issue: how Arsenal begin their title defence, and whether the opening results make the early table worth reading.
What to watch next
- 18-19 August: the Champions League play-off first legs begin, with Fenerbahce v Lyon and NEC v Bodo/Glimt in the league path, and Sabah v Hapoel Be'er Sheva among the champions-path ties. 2
- 25-26 August: the return legs decide the seven aggregate winners that complete the league-phase field. 2
- 21 August: Arsenal v Coventry City opens the Premier League schedule. 5
The week therefore ends with one competition already sorting its European field, one just beginning to hand out domestic points, and one still waiting for its first whistle.
