A rare transition metal with hcp structure — alloyed with aluminum for aerospace frames, predicted by mendeleev before its discovery.
Scandium was predicted by Mendeleev in 1871 as 'eka-boron' before it was discovered in 1879. Small additions (0.5%) to aluminum alloys increase strength significantly. Scandium's pale pinkish tinge comes from subtle electronic transitions. It is rare and expensive.
