Some sea stars eat with their stomach outside.

They use tube feet to pry open shellfish, then evert the stomach through the mouth and digest the prey outside the body. In a 2025 field study, eight crown-of-thorns starfish fed on 65% of observation days, so that measured rhythm belongs to this species and study, not every sea star. 1 2
