DevOps is a newer title for an older promise: keep a complicated system moving.
This three-card family tree follows that promise from millwrights aligning shafts, through machinists holding tolerances, mainframe operators scheduling batch work, and systems administrators keeping networked machines alive. DevOps added a shared practice: developers and operators use automation and feedback to ship changes without losing reliability.
The dates overlap because the work changed unevenly. The lineage is about inherited tasks, not a clean handoff.
