DeFi Week 43: TVL falls 3.3%, deposits rise in ether, and $543M lands in two Base vault books

DeFi TVL fell 3.35% to $88.89B in the week to 18 October while the ether-denominated book rose 2.06% for a second week; $543M landed in two Base curator books on 13 October, UNCX's exploit carried three different price tags, and Spark passed a 100M sUSDS bridge to Arbitrum.

DeFi TVL Ranking & Protocol Anomalies@NeoDrop Official
DeFi's aggregate total value locked ended the window at $88.8945B, the daily snapshot for 18 October, down $3.0785B or 3.3472% from $91.9730B on 12 October. 1
The scheduled window runs from 12 October to 19 October 2026, 10:00 GMT-5. TVL figures use the nearest daily snapshots, 12 and 18 October, and prices are sampled at daily closes.
Ether fell from $2,534.63 to $2,400.31, a drop of 5.30%, over the same seven days. 2 Balances are marked at current prices, so the price term is larger than the aggregate's decline. The same book measured in ether went from 36.287M to 37.035M ETH, up 2.06%. 1
That is the second consecutive week of ether-denominated inflow. Measured from 5 October, before the liquidation flush, the ether book is 4.57% larger, at 37.035M against 35.417M ETH. 1
Two events shaped the week. Ether lost 3.5% on 13 October and another 3.1% on 15 October, with a 2.1% bounce between them. 2 On Friday 16 October, WTI crude rose 3.8% to $101.70 on reports that Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline had been targeted; the Nasdaq fell 2.15% and the VIX rose 22%. 3
Bitcoin traded below $80,000 briefly on Thursday 15 October. 3 Against that backdrop, two Base vault books added $543M in a single day, and four curator books stepped up by far more than their chains' own totals moved.

A dollar move and a flow move separate whenever the unit of account moves. Ether's 5.30% decline is larger than the aggregate's 3.3472%, so the difference between the two is the flow, and it runs positive. 1
The macro calendar explains the shape. CoinDesk reported on 16 October that Fed Chair Kevin Warsh defended September's rate hike, and that October hike odds had fallen to 15% from about 45% after Wednesday's CPI report. 3 A hot inflation print, an oil spike and a 5.1% ten-year Treasury yield delivered two selling days in one week. 3
The next window will show whether the ether-terms inflow held through a third week, or whether the two-week gain was positioning ahead of the CPI print.

Eleven of these fifteen chains fell in dollars. Two of the fifteen also fell in ether terms: Hyperliquid L1 at -3.76% and Avalanche at -3.34%. Solana sat flat at +0.05%, and the other twelve held or grew.
Two chains only look weak in dollars. Hyperliquid L1 fell 8.86% while HYPE fell 9.97%, which leaves the chain up 1.23% in HYPE terms. 15 Avalanche fell 8.47% while AVAX fell 10.99%, which leaves it up 2.83% in AVAX terms. 32
Solana tells the same story in SOL: the chain fell 5.25% while SOL fell 7.09%, leaving it up 1.98% in SOL terms. 14
Arc's +40.57% needs a label. Its series sat near $534M on 15 October and jumped $261M on 17 October to $795M. 27 Two curator vault sets arrived on Arc on 15 October, covered below; the chain total lagged them by two days. Treat Arc's weekly change as a new chain filling in its coverage.
The chain endpoint now lists 420 networks and $89.7823B at its latest reading, against 468 networks a week ago. 16 The aggregate series carries no matching step at that scale, so this issue keeps the daily series for every window figure.

Protocol ranking: the daily series against the feed

DeFiLlama's change_7d anchors to the same clock time seven days earlier; the window here ends at the 18 October daily snapshot. 4 Three measurement effects decide which number to use.
The provider's series firmed up on 19 October, before this issue's cutoff. LayerZero V2's Polygon leg ran from $4.024B on 18 October to $5.283B on 19 October, PancakeSwap V3's BSC leg from $424.2M to $666.1M, Uniswap V4's Arc leg from $4.3M to $271.3M, and Polygon's own chain total from $679.7M to $1.233B. 3334
Those steps sit inside the feed's 7-day column. LayerZero V2 shows +9.17% today against -3.09% on the daily window, and PancakeSwap V3 shows +119.32% against +45.02%. 4 The tables below use the daily series, and each figure a reader will see on the feed has its counterpart here.
DeFiLlama also restated the 11 October aggregate to $91.4920B from the $92.0986B reported in this brief last week. 1 This issue uses the current series at both ends of its window.
Uniswap V4's daily series ends on 16 October at $1.372B, so its 19 October reading of $1.885B ($267M of it Arc) sits outside the window. 35

Lido, SSV Network, Binance staked ETH and ether.fi Stake each landed within 0.3 points of ether's own -5.30%. 4 Three of the four came out positive in ether terms. Aave V3 fell less than ether, at -4.39%, which leaves it +0.96% in ether terms.
The week's genuine contractions are smaller and specific: Sky Lending (-0.86% in ether), EigenCloud (-0.90%), USDT0 (-0.88%) and Portal (-1.31%). Portal pairs an Ethereum leg with an Algorand leg that fell 11.5%. Starknet Bridge's -38.34% is a price move inside its escrow, covered below.

Steps that look like deposits

Grove and Steakhouse are the two largest gainers on the feed, and their dollars arrived on the same chain on the same day. Grove's Base leg ran from $63.4M to $378.4M on 13 October, and Steakhouse's from $937.4M to $1,165.4M. 57
Base's own chain total fell that day, from $6.242B to $6.108B, a 2.1% decline against ether's 3.5%. 18 In ether terms Base gained about 1.4%, roughly $90M, against the $543M the two curator books added.
Grove's methodology counts the assets its ALM Proxy holds, including RWA tokens, Aave aTokens, ERC-4626 shares and Curve and Uniswap positions. 5 A single vault entering that count produces a one-day step while the chain's total holds flat.
Steakhouse published its own market update on 13 October. The note covers Base and Ethereum credit spreads and a new USDG Pro vault on Arbitrum that drew $5.7M in its first week; it gives no Base deposit figure. 55
The same shape repeats on Arc. Galaxy Curation ran from $35.1M to $124.6M and Keyrock from $7.6M to $83.3M, both on 15 October, with their Ethereum legs flat. 3637 Arc's chain total stayed near $534M that day and added $261M two days later.
PancakeSwap V3's BSC step comes with chain-level confirmation. Its BSC leg added $154.1M on 17 October while BSC's chain total rose $319M that day, from $5.336B to $5.655B, and BNB fell 1.1%. 2156 The cause stays unresolved.
Starknet Bridge's 41.6% fall is a price move inside the escrow. The escrow held 3.95B STRK on 12 October and 4.07B on 18 October, so the token balance grew while STRK fell 47.63%, from $0.1230 to $0.0644. 4957
The same pattern explains last week's $201M step on this bridge: it too arrived while STRK was rising, and the token balance behind it moved much less than the dollars. 58

Security: one exploit, three price tags

Two incidents carry in-window dates on the DeFiLlama feed, and the larger one has three different totals depending on who is counting. 8
ProtocolChain(s)Loss on the feedBest-dated lossAttack vectorRemediation
UNCX Network V2Ethereum, Base, BSC, Robinhood Chain$86,000 8~$807,000 extracted, ~$58,000 returned 9Share accounting in Vesting V2 9Vesting contracts immutable and closed to new positions; LP lockers unaffected 9
Pirate ChainPirate Chainamount temporarily unavailable 8first-party figure unavailableUnbacked mint 8Not disclosed
Blockaid's figure, reported on 15 October, is about $1.49M across four chains: $969,000 on BNB Smart Chain, $242,000 on Ethereum, $169,000 on Robinhood Chain and $114,000 on Base. 59 That count includes 11 drain transactions, with copycat wallets and MEV bots joining after the first.
UNCX's own update on 17 October puts the confirmed figure at about $807,000 in assets extracted and liquidated, plus about $58,000 in ETH returned by whitehat c0ffeebabe.eth and MEV operator Yoink. 9 Ten tokens were affected across the four chains, and about $3.25M remained in the affected Ethereum contract when Blockaid flagged the attack. 59
The mechanism matters for anyone holding locked tokens. The release() function cut the global share total without removing released shares from a position's record, so a later cancellation deducted the same shares twice, and a tiny leftover position could withdraw tokens backing other users' deposits. 59 The attacker relied on the contract's own bookkeeping.
One off-protocol event belongs in the same week's risk picture. rekt.news reported on 16 October that sealed Ledger boxes sold through CryptoBilis carried hidden LTE modems that radioed recovery words out, with about $102 million drained from buyers and implants found in devices from MediaMarkt as well. 60
The feed also added a 10 October entry after last week's edition went out: Papertrade, $1.28M on Hyperliquid L1, oracle manipulation. 8 That loss belongs to the previous window, and last week's total of $577,873 did not include it.

Spark's vote carries a rate consequence. The Arbitrum PSM3 sells sUSDS to users for USDC and USDS, and its inventory fell from 57,993,876 sUSDS on 16 September to 32,608,532.69 on 8 October as users bought about 1.15M a day. 11 The 100M top-up takes the balance to about 132.6M, roughly 115 days of sales at that pace.
The same spell carries two SparkLend changes. WETH's slope 2 falls from 75% to 30% above the 90% kink, and the PYUSD, RLUSD and USDG rate models move to 80% optimal utilisation with a base rate of the Sky Savings Rate plus 0.20%. 11 The poll covered the bridge; the spell goes to the Sky executive vote on 22 October and executes on or after about 26 October.
Balancer's fork vote settles what survives the shut-down. BIP-932 gives MAXYZ a blessing to fork the code without a grant, with access to the internal security repository and the Immunefi account; the fork takes no trademarks, branding or BAL. 63 BIP-929, which asked for a funded reincarnation, failed last week.
The wind-down timetable is now public. rekt.news reported on 14 October that holders voted 99.2% to shut down 11 months after a $128M exploit, with pools going withdrawals-only on 30 October and redemptions opening in May 2027 at an estimated $0.158 per BAL. 71
Abracadabra's vote is the week's clearest governance oddity. The space's quorum field is hardcoded at 3,000,000,000, while the vote supply is 1,030,156,193.663. The proposal states that the admin keys belong to unreachable former team members and sets its own pass mark at 30% of supply, or 309,046,858.1 votes. 65 Two voters cast 396,163,281 For, clearing the proposal's own bar and falling short of the recorded quorum.
The substance is stark: about $22M of MIM outstanding against roughly $900,000 of actionable backing, or about $0.04 per MIM, with about $21M of bad debt. 65 The plan swaps cauldron collateral to WETH and airdrops it through Merkl, with unclaimed balances after six months going to the MIM holders who claimed.
Aave's USAT listing adds a regulated dollar asset on borrow-only terms. USAT is Tether America USD, issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A. under OCC supervision, and redeemable 1:1 under the GENIUS Act. 67 The listing carries a 20M supply cap, an 18M borrow cap, 0% LTV and flashloans disabled, with a 5M add cap and a 4M draw cap on the V4 Core Hub.
One vote is still open. Starknet's Foundation opened a seven-day, non-binding poll on 15 October asking whether Starknet should research becoming an independent post-quantum L1. 72 The poll closes on 22 October; 387,891,979 STRK had voted, 99.96% for research, from 2,681 voters. 61 A yes starts research; any move to layer 1 would need a separate proposal.

Yield: the volatility premium reached the fee-led pools

Seventeen pools cleared $500,000 of TVL and 1,000% APY this week, against sixteen last week, and thirteen of the seventeen sit on Base. 12 Most of the Base list is the same Aerodrome Slipstream set, with emission-heavy rates that move with token prices.
The top of the screen is Aerodrome Slipstream CTR-USDC at 234,163.83% on $0.6M, of which rewards supply 234,158.61 points and base fees 5.23. 12 USDC-VELVET follows at 79,867.62%, USDC-PROS at 41,181.35%, and USDC-SNDKC at 8,460.39% with the highest fee share in the screen at 174.49 points of base yield.
Two base-only prints are new. Concrete's CTQIROUSD1 on Ethereum shows 1,522.42% on $3.0M with base yield alone, against a 30-day mean of 2.3%. 12 Uniswap V4's CLAUS-USDC on Ethereum shows 1,241.31%, also base-only, on $0.5M, with a 30-day mean of 2,383.8%.
CLAUS-USDC's 30-day mean supports a persistent fee regime; CTQIROUSD1's 2.3% mean points to a one-off fee event. 12
The deeper books are where the week's volatility shows up, and their rates rose:

These four pools pay from swap fees alone, and each carries more than $200M of weekly volume against books of $150M or less. 12 The two selling days raised turnover, and turnover is what these pools sell.

What changed for positions this week

  • sUSDS on Arbitrum: 100,000,000 sUSDS moves to the Arbitrum ALM Proxy for PSM3, which sells sUSDS for USDC and USDS. 11 The spell goes to the Sky executive vote on 22 October and settles on Arbitrum once the retryable ticket redeems.
  • SparkLend WETH: slope 2 falls from 75% to 30% above the 90% utilisation kink, which changes the cost of looping staked ETH past that point. 11
  • SparkLend stablecoin markets: PYUSD, RLUSD and USDG move to a common model with 80% optimal utilisation and a base rate of the Sky Savings Rate plus 0.20%. 11
  • Aave USAT: borrowable at a 20M supply cap and an 18M borrow cap, with 0% LTV, so USAT enters as a borrowing venue and stays outside collateral use. 67
  • MIM: the wind-down values MIM at about $0.04 against roughly $22M outstanding, with borrowers repaid in WETH at collateral minus debt. 65
  • Curator TVL: Grove, Steakhouse, Galaxy Curation and Keyrock each stepped up on a single day, so their feed numbers measure coverage and reallocation alongside deposits. 4
