Ever notice your fingertips turning into little ridges after a long bath? Water immersion triggers an automatic response: the autonomic nervous system tells blood vessels in the fingertip to constrict, and the fingertip's soft pulp loses volume. The skin then folds into wrinkles. 1
The pattern may also help in a wet setting. In a 2013 experiment with 20 participants, wrinkled fingers transferred submerged objects 12% faster than unwrinkled fingers, while dry-object handling showed no difference. The result supports a wet-grip benefit, while the exact physical reason remains open: the ridges may help drain water, change friction, or do both. 2
The short version: water → nerve signal → narrower vessels → less fingertip volume → wrinkles.
