Caregiving can make the search for help feel like another full-time job. A first doorway, not a perfect plan

AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving's 2025 report estimates that about 63 million Americans are family caregivers. In its analysis of 32 states, the share who said it was difficult to care for their own health ranged from 12 percent in New York to 31 percent in Florida. 1 The gap is a reminder that access is shaped by place and systems, not just by how hard one caregiver tries.

AARP explains that social workers can assess a family's medical, psychological, social and practical needs, coordinate care, explain complex systems, connect services, and support caregivers dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, guilt and grief. 2 AARP also says that employee assistance programs typically provide confidential short-term counseling and professional support for issues such as caregiving-related stress and anxiety, although each employer's program is different. 3

Family Caregiver Alliance's HelpHub gathers routes to support groups, counseling, respite and self-care resources. Its CareNav tool offers a free online dashboard with personalized information after a short intake, and FCA lists a Family Caregiver Helpline at 1-800-445-8106 on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time. 4 5

One call you can make tomorrow

If the care maze is the barrier, ask a hospital, clinic or rehabilitation team for a social worker or caregiver navigator. You can also contact the Eldercare Locator, a public service of the Administration for Community Living, by calling or texting 1-800-677-1116, using online chat, or emailing trained staff for local service connections. 6 If work is the most reachable doorway, check your EAP and ask what confidentiality, counseling and caregiver support it actually includes.
