Global English Word Watch #2: bomboclat, crash out, chopped, glazing and unc status

The Urban Dictionary date below is the oldest dated entry found on the checked term page. Urban Dictionary is user-submitted, so an early submission records usage by one contributor; it does not prove who coined a term. When an older entry records a different sense, that distinction is stated.

The five terms below show two common routes into wider English: regional speech carried through music and community use, and platform language carried through Twitch, TikTok, memes, and youth conversation. Their meanings do not always travel intact.

Definition: In Jamaican English, bomboclat is a strong vulgarism comparable in force to the f-word. In Internet slang, it can be a nonsense caption for something strange, funny, or jarring, and it can also mean attractive or impressive. The spelling bumboclaat is also common. 1

Oldest dated Urban Dictionary entry found: 25 March 2006, by Furious79. It describes bomboclat as a Jamaican expression of shock or surprise. This is a user-submitted usage record, not proof of the word's origin. 2

Background: The word comes from Jamaican English and is recorded there from the 1950s, with likely earlier use. Merriam-Webster connects it to bumbo, a coarse Patois term for female genitalia, and claat, a Jamaican word for cloth. Its Internet meaning widened after a 2019 meme-caption trend, while the Jamaican use remains vulgar. Using the word as a generic meme reaction without regard for that origin can be culturally insensitive. 1

Example: "The dog opened the cupboard and somehow pulled out a whole loaf. Bomboclat."

Definition: To crash out is to become suddenly, uncontrollably angry or distressed. The phrase can also be a noun for a specific loss of control. 3

Oldest dated Urban Dictionary entry found: 8 April 2006, by Dr4T7. That entry uses crash out to mean going to sleep, an older sense that is separate from the current anger-related use. The earliest matching entry for the modern rage sense visible in the check was 30 October 2019, by Brebandz, who labeled it Baton Rouge slang; another relevant entry followed on 2 December 2019. 4

Background: Earlier evidence exists, but Merriam-Webster notes that several online sources credit a 2017 song by Baton Rouge rapper NBA YoungBoy, with the lyric "crash out if I'm nervous," with helping popularize the anger-related sense. It now appears in online talk about reacting recklessly or losing control. The phrase still has older meanings connected with sleeping and accidents, so context matters. 3

Example: "I nearly crashed out when the train doors closed in front of me."

Definition: In current slang, chopped means unattractive, uncool, or undesirable. It can describe a person, an outfit, a haircut, or another object. 56

Oldest dated Urban Dictionary entry found: 4 March 2004, by Netty. The entry uses chopped as an insult for an unattractive person. As with all Urban Dictionary dates here, it is a community submission rather than evidence of coinage. 7

Background: Merriam-Webster describes the slang as rooted in African American English, with some online commentators placing it more specifically in the New York and New Jersey area. Dictionary.com says the term gained fresh attention among younger users after the late-2024 "Chopped Chin" meme spread on TikTok, and that Gen Z and Gen Alpha now use it both online and in conversation. The word is blunt and appearance-focused, so it can function as an insult even when used casually. 56

Example: "That haircut looked fine yesterday, but the new fringe is chopped."

Definition: Glazing means giving a person or thing excessive praise, often in a way that sounds insincere, biased, or irritating. The related verb is to glaze. 89

Oldest dated Urban Dictionary entry found: 20 August 2003, by Dirty Webster. That page entry records an unrelated explicit sexual sense. The earliest praise-related entry visible in the same check was 11 November 2022, by Rezgang, who described glazing as New York slang for excessive praise. The dates are user-submitted records, not proof that either sense began on that date. 10

Background: Merriam-Webster places the praise sense on social media in the early 2020s. Dictionary.com traces its circulation around 2021 through posts on X and the livestream communities of Kai Cenat and Duke Dennis, whose clips moved into YouTube and TikTok. It is common in sports, film, anime, and gaming fandoms, where viewers use it to accuse someone of overhyping a favourite player, creator, or character. 89

Example: "Stop glazing the referee; that call was not even close."

Definition: Unc is short for uncle. Online, unc status humorously labels someone as old, out of touch, or acting older than their age. In African American English, unc can also be an affectionate or respectful term for an uncle or older man. 11

Oldest dated Urban Dictionary entry found: 30 April 2024, by it's true I promise. The entry describes the moment someone realizes that a once-recent memory happened years ago and that they now feel old. This is a user-submitted record of the phrase unc status. 12

Background: Merriam-Webster places unc in African American communities and African American English, with rap and hip-hop helping carry it into wider use. It cites a 2003 rap example from Defari and later associations with Gucci Mane and J. Cole. The current Internet joke gained traction around 2021, when a TikTok video captioned a younger person's greeting of "Wassup unc" as the moment of reaching "unc status." The phrase can therefore be teasing, affectionate, or respectful depending on who is speaking and about whom. 11

Example: "You still print directions for a ten-minute drive? Unc status."

The dictionary sources describe current meanings and usage histories. Urban Dictionary entries are included as dated, user-submitted records; their dates should not be read as authoritative evidence of a term's coinage.
