Global English Word Watch #4: SYBAU, clock it, mog, slop and tradwife

The Urban Dictionary date for each term is the oldest dated entry I found on the checked page during this week's research. Urban Dictionary is user-submitted, so an early entry records one contributor's usage; it does not prove who coined the term. Where an older entry uses a different sense, that distinction is stated.

These five terms move through teen texting, Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ ballroom culture, manosphere forums, AI criticism, and social-media influencer culture. Their routes into wider English are different, but none of the dates below should be mistaken for a birth certificate.

Meaning. SYBAU (or sybau) abbreviates "shut your bitch ass up" and is an angry online way to tell someone to stop talking. Merriam-Webster describes it as usually vituperative, though it can also be used tongue-in-cheek. 1

Urban Dictionary. The oldest dated entry found on the exact Shut Your Bitch Ass Up (SYBAU) page is 26 May 2010, by KiDWest. It is a user-submitted record, not evidence that the acronym was coined that day. 2

Background. The record is older than its current teen-text visibility: Merriam-Webster says evidence of SYBAU goes back more than 20 years and shows examples from X and Bluesky in 2025. The Guardian included it in a 13 April 2026 explainer of abbreviations used in teenage text conversations. In practice, expect it in online arguments or deliberately exaggerated replies, not in neutral conversation. 13

Meaning. Clock it means to notice something, figure it out, or call it out. In ballroom usage, clocking can carry the more specific sense of recognising someone's private business, so using the phrase around queer or trans people without knowing the context can be intrusive. 4

Urban Dictionary. The oldest visible entry on the exact clock it page is 28 April 2006, by JadedMaple, but it records a different meaning: getting somewhere quickly. The oldest matching use I found in the checked clock it pages is 28 November 2017, by rich lux, on the variant clock it the house. The exact page also has a 6 May 2019 entry by Coustoy using clock it as an expression of frustration. All are user-submitted records. 56

Background. The phrase is not a new Gen Z invention. Them traces its ballroom use to a Black and Latinx queer and trans scene that formed in New York in the 1960s, where it could mean noticing or knowing someone's business. The internet and popular culture carried a broader version into wider use, often without the ballroom history attached. The small thumb-and-middle-finger clap that sometimes accompanies the phrase is related ballroom language, but it is a gesture of approval, not the literal meaning of clock it. 4

Meaning. To mog someone is to outclass or outshine them, especially in physical appearance; mogging can now describe winning at a sport, looking better in a photo, or simply standing out. Merriam-Webster calls it humorous internet slang, while Dictionary.com notes that onlookers can use it for any obvious comparison. 78

Urban Dictionary. The oldest matching entry found on the checked mogging page is 7 January 2024, by Firecheeksmogger. It describes sharp facial features and a sharp jawline. This is a user-submitted usage record, not proof of coinage. 9

Background. Both dictionaries trace mog to AMOG, or "Alpha Male of the Group," a term from online manosphere communities. Merriam-Webster places mog in male internet forums by 2016; Dictionary.com describes its later use in manosphere and incel forums and in looksmaxxing communities, where users rate and compare appearance. By June 2026, the Guardian described mogging as mainstream among many Gen Z and Gen Alpha users, often used ironically for anything from a photograph to overtaking someone on the street. The older status-ranking baggage has not disappeared, especially when the comparison concerns looks or sexual desirability. 7810

Meaning. In current internet use, slop means low-quality digital content produced, usually in quantity, by artificial intelligence. It can refer to AI-generated images, videos, posts, or books made to attract clicks, engagement, or revenue. Merriam-Webster now gives this AI-content sense in its dictionary; Dictionary.com distinguishes deliberately fake material from merely sloppy output. 1112

Urban Dictionary. The oldest dated entry found on the checked AI slop page is 4 May 2024, by JJJJaKKKoooooo. It describes low-quality, randomly generated AI content flooding social media. Urban Dictionary is user-submitted, so this date records visible usage rather than coinage. 13

Background. Dictionary.com places the slang sense around 2022, with early use on online forums such as 4chan and in YouTube comments, and names British developer Simon Willison as an early proponent. In 2025 Merriam-Webster chose slop as its Word of the Year after the term became a compact label for mass-produced AI images, videos, fake news, and AI-written books. Dictionary.com's 2026 examples include an AI-generated TikTok series that viewers called slop. The term is now used by journalists, digital creators, and internet users who want to criticise the output rather than merely identify it as machine-made. 121415

Meaning. Tradwife is short for traditional wife. In current social-media use, it labels a married woman or an online persona built around homemaking, child care, and traditional gender roles. It is a label for a visible cultural niche, not a synonym for every stay-at-home parent. 16

Urban Dictionary. The oldest dated entry found on the checked tradwife page is 2 February 2017, by Marek Möhling. The page also shows later entries with different political framings; those are user-submitted descriptions, not an authority on what the word must mean. 17

Background. The term reached a broad audience through influencers who post domestic routines and traditional-role content on Instagram and TikTok. ABC News reports that Hannah Neeleman, known online as @ballerinafarm, helped popularize the label, and that Cambridge Dictionary added it among 6,212 new words, phrases, and meanings in August 2025. That route explains why tradwife appears in both cultural arguments about gender roles and ordinary discussions of influencer branding. 16

The oldest visible Urban Dictionary record and the moment a term becomes broadly recognisable are often years apart. SYBAU has a 2010 acronym entry but is now explained as teen text slang; clock it has an older unrelated page sense while its ballroom meaning travelled through mainstream internet culture. Mog and slop show a different route: both began in specialised online environments and then became useful shorthand outside them. Tradwife spread as a social-media identity label before dictionary editors treated it as a term with staying power.

Context still does the work that a definition cannot. The same phrase can be playful, hostile, culturally specific, or politically loaded depending on who says it and where.
