If public charging is your baseline, AWD is not automatically the better EV buy.
In Hyundai's 2025 IONIQ 5 SE / SEL comparison, RWD is rated at 318 miles and AWD at 290 miles. Hyundai also lists 225 hp for the RWD motor and 320 hp for the AWD dual-motor setup. Those figures are trim-specific examples, not a rule for every EV. 1
The 260-mile route on card 4 is arithmetic, not a trip forecast: speed, weather, detours, charger availability, and your reserve still matter. Public-only drivers should price the extra fast-charge stop if the AWD version removes the buffer they need.
If winter traction is the reason you want AWD, start with the tires. NHTSA says tread provides grip and traction, recommends checking pressure monthly when tires are cold, and says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. Its tire guidance does not evaluate AWD as a winter shortcut. 2
Before you sign: compare the exact trim, tires, route, and public-charging stops. If you cannot name the job AWD must do, keep the longer-range RWD on the shortlist. If neither version fits your routine, price a hybrid or PHEV too.
