No. 189 Lou Brock broke Ty Cobb's stolen-base record—and lost 4–3

On August 29, 1977, Lou Brock stole two bases against the San Diego Padres and passed Ty Cobb's career stolen-base record. Brock reached 893 career steals that afternoon. The Cardinals lost the game, 4–3. 1

Brock was 38 and playing left field for St. Louis. His first steal tied Cobb's total of 892 in the first inning. His second steal came in the seventh, giving Brock the record by himself. After the game, the second-base bag was presented to Brock, even though San Diego had just beaten his team. 1

The order of events gives the afternoon its strange shape. Brock did not wait for a victory, a pennant celebration, or even a Cardinals lead to make history. The record arrived as a pair of ordinary baseball actions inside a one-run loss: first a tie, then a theft that made 893 the new number. The date-specific account from USA TODAY also records the two steals and the 4–3 result. 2

Ty Cobb's 892 steals had been the benchmark Brock was chasing. The National Baseball Hall of Fame says Brock surpassed Cobb's all-time stolen-base mark during the 1977 season. Brock later finished his career with 938 steals, a total that stood until 1991. 3

Brock's path to that number had already made him baseball's most conspicuous baserunner. The Hall of Fame records 118 steals for Brock in 1974, when he was 35, and says he led the National League in steals every year but one from 1966 through 1974. Those seasons explain why Cobb's record was within reach for Brock: speed was not a side feature of his game. It was the pressure he applied every time he reached first base. 3

Baseball usually gives a record a clean setting. A pitcher finishes a no-hitter, a hitter circles the bases after a milestone home run, and the scoreboard supplies a celebratory backdrop. Brock's record had a messier ending. The Cardinals' 4–3 loss stayed attached to the day, while the stolen-base total moved into baseball's record book. 1

That split is the shareable fact. San Diego won the game. Lou Brock won the race against a number that had belonged to Ty Cobb. The record-breaking base was handed to Brock after the loss, turning a defeat into one of baseball's most peculiar milestone celebrations.
