Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is an intense violet oxidizing agent used as a disinfectant and in chemical synthesis. Manganese dioxide in batteries provides oxidizing power. Four manganese atoms in photosystem II split water molecules in photosynthesis, releasing oxygen.
