Water polo gold, sprint titles, and Hangzhou's final stretch

The clearest Team USA result this week came in Sydney, where the U.S. women beat Spain 13-9 to win the World Aquatics Women's Water Polo World Cup Final. It was the program's seventh World Cup title and fifth in the last six editions. Emily Ausmus scored six goals in the final and finished as the tournament's leading scorer with 11; goalkeeper Amanda Longan made 13 saves and was named the competition's best goalkeeper. 1

New York supplied the track headline: Noah Lyles won the men's 100 meters at the USA Championships in 9.79 seconds, while Sha'Carri Richardson won the women's title in 10.77. Both are important 2026 form markers, but the meet result is not a published LA28 roster selection. 23

Hangzhou is still live through July 29. Kimberly Rhode and Samantha Simonton opened the U.S. medal account with a one-two finish in women's skeet, and the ISSF's July 26 standings list the United States with four medals. The remaining finals are the immediate watch point for the coming week. 45

The World Cup Final ran July 22-26 in Sydney, Australia. The United States' 13-9 win over Spain was not an Olympic qualification event, but it was a useful senior-team signal on the LA28 road: the group recovered the title after missing the previous edition and finished a tournament with a settled roster and a major international win. World Aquatics lists Rachel Fattal as the U.S. captain, Ausmus as the final's six-goal scorer, and Longan as the goalkeeper who made the difference early. 16

For U.S. viewers, World Aquatics listed NBC Sports for the United States, with the final also available through the event's international live and on-demand options. 6

Lyles' 9.79 was the fastest mark in the men's 100m final, ahead of Ronnie Baker and Kenneth Bednarek at 9.88. Richardson's 10.77 led Kayla White at 10.90 and Tamari Davis at 11.00 in the women's final. The World Athletics results pages identify the meet as the USA Championships at Icahn Stadium in New York, July 23-26. 23

The selection read is deliberately modest. These are national-championship results and strong form evidence; the published results do not establish a 2028 Olympic team, ranking position, or quota place. For now, the names to carry forward are Lyles, Richardson, Bednarek, Baker, White and Davis.

Rhode defeated Simonton 34-32 in the women's skeet final on July 23. The result gave Team USA gold and silver in the event, with Rhode's six Olympic medals and Simonton's national-team status providing the experience-versus-emergence angle to watch. 4

The World Cup covers rifle, pistol and shotgun in Hangzhou from July 20-29. The final three days are especially useful for U.S. fans: women's 25m pistol and women's and men's trap finals are scheduled for July 27, mixed-team rifle and trap finals for July 28, and delegations depart July 29. 57

USA Shooting's published rifle and pistol selections include Alison Weisz, Mary Tucker, Elizabeth Probst, Sagen Maddalena, Ada Korkhin and Keith Sanderson. That announcement describes the selections as part of preparation for LA28 and as a test of future Olympic-team procedures, not as an Olympic roster announcement. All Hangzhou finals are streamed free on the official ISSF YouTube channel. 89

The Phoenix meet is the next direct domestic selection story in the current source set. The official event site confirms August 6-9 at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix; detailed broadcast information was not included in the federation announcement reviewed here. 12

This week's results fit three different layers of the LA28 build. Sydney shows a senior national team winning a major international event and settling a group around Fattal, Ausmus and Longan. New York shows the sprint contenders producing championship-level marks. Hangzhou tests named USA Shooting athletes against a full World Cup field, while the federation continues building the selection process it plans to use for the next Olympic team.

The practical order for the coming week is simple: follow Hangzhou's July 27-28 finals first, then shift attention to Phoenix on August 6. The most important distinction is also the easiest one to lose in a busy Olympic cycle: a World Cup medal, a national championship, and a qualification or selection result are related signals, but they are not interchangeable.
