July 14 scorecard: Costco's beef-stick edge, BJ's gas, Sam's gap

July 14 scorecard: Costco's beef-stick edge, BJ's gas, Sam's gap

This week's strict-sale warehouse scorecard finds Costco narrowly cheaper on Country Archer beef sticks, BJ's strongest at the pump, and Sam's best for targeted July markdowns and a $55 Plus membership promo.

Sam's has the louder July snack sheet, but the cleanest same-brand unit-price win this week is still Costco: Country Archer beef-stick minis come out about 2 cents cheaper per ounce at Costco, and the deal dies July 19. That is the one strict, same-brand grocery match I would buy on deadline. Everything else is a more cautious scorecard: BJ's owns the gas lane, Sam's owns the new-member price, and Costco's current book is in its final week.
A note before the grab list: this is a strict-sale week, not a full-catalog price dump. I only treat an item as a head-to-head pick when it is currently marked down and has a defensible comparable at another club. That filter leaves fewer product rows than usual, because Sam's is between Instant Savings Books and BJ's public product-coupon feed did not surface a full current coupon book. The practical answer is still useful: make one Costco stop for the expiring beef-stick and frozen-chicken deals, use Sam's only for targeted July sale items or the membership promo, and use BJ's for gas if you have a club on your route.

Headline picks

PickWinnerWhy it wins this weekHousehold-size note
Same-brand beef sticksCostco by a noseCostco's Country Archer 28-count bag is $12.59 after $5.40 off, or about $0.90/oz; Sam's Archer 24-count pack is $10.98 after $4.44 off, or about $0.92/oz. Costco's deal expires July 19, while Sam's runs longer. 1 2Fine for 1-2 people if you actually pack snacks; shelf-stable, not a freezer hog.
Prepared chickenSam's for price per pound; Costco for plain frozen stripsCostco's Tyson rotisserie chicken strips are $11.99 after $5 off for 48 oz, about $4.00/lb. Sam's chipotle seasoned diced chicken thighs are $6.87 off a $13.74 regular price for a 32 oz pack, which pencils to about $3.44/lb if the full discount is applied. 1 2Both are manageable. Costco is a 3 lb freezer item; Sam's is a 2 lb prepared-protein pack.
FuelBJ's, if location worksBJ's chainwide regular gas averaged $3.603 on July 14, versus AAA's national regular average of $3.859 the same day. That is a 25.6 cent gap before any BJ's Club+, card, or Fuel Saver stacking. 3 4Good for any household with a nearby pump. Do not detour so far that the savings vanish.
New member dealSam's for the cleanest upgrade price; BJ's for gas-heavy newcomersSam's is advertising $25 Club and $55 Plus first-year memberships through Aug. 1. BJ's has a $15 new-member path plus $1/gal off BJ's Gas for 30 days. 5 6Singles and couples should treat the membership as a gas-and-staples play, not an excuse to buy giant perishables.

Category-by-category scorecard

Food and snacks

The cleanest Costco-vs-Sam's match is Country Archer. Costco has the larger 28-count bag for $12.59 after $5.40 off through July 19; Sam's has a 24-count Archer Original Mini Beef Sticks pack at $4.44 off a $15.42 regular price through Aug. 31. Same brand, same 0.5 oz stick format, close enough to compare without pretending they are identical SKUs. Costco wins the unit price by a hair; Sam's wins the longer runway. 1 2
For prepared protein, Sam's has the better math on its chipotle seasoned diced chicken thighs if the full $6.87 discount is available at your club. Costco's Tyson rotisserie chicken breast strips are plainer and frozen, but the price is still reasonable at $11.99 for 48 oz after a $5 discount. My split: Sam's if you want dinner shortcuts this week; Costco if you want a freezer bag that does not lock you into one seasoning. 1 2
Sam's also has real July markdowns on Propel Zero ($3 off a $15.48 regular price through July 20), Hershey's 36-count bars ($6 off a $41.72 regular price through Sept. 6), Samyang Buldak ramen bowls ($3.50 off a $12.48 regular price through July 21), and Korean-style beef sirloin tips ($9.79 off $32.96 through Aug. 3). Those are sale items, but I would not force them into a Costco/BJ's match without a same-week, same-pack competitor. 2

Household consumables

Costco's Weekly Warehouse Insider has Dixie 12 oz paper bowls, 175-count, at $2.50 off through July 26, plus Clorox Bathroom Bleach Foamer, 30 oz three-count, at $2.50 off through Aug. 2. 8 These are useful summer-household buys, but they are not automatic buys for a one- or two-person household.
The bowls are the safer small-household purchase: 175 bowls will last, they do not spoil, and they are easy to split with family. The Clorox three-pack is also fine if you have storage. I would not buy it just because it is on sale if you already have two open cleaners under the sink.

Electronics and appliances

Sam's has the clearest active appliance markdown: the Ninja Crispi 5-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer Cooking System is $30 off a $159.98 regular price through July 20. 2 Costco's current Weekly Warehouse Insider includes an Oura Ring 5 Silver Smart Ring Bundle at $399.99, but the page presents it as a featured warehouse item, not a markdown. 8
That means Sam's wins the appliance lane only if you were already shopping for that exact portable air fryer format. Otherwise, skip the category. A $129.98 appliance you do not need is still $129.98 out the door.

Tires and auto

No clean tire row this week. Costco's Weekly Warehouse Insider points shoppers back to Costco Tires and lists the usual installation/service advantages, but the public page did not show a specific current tire-dollar-off event in the readable text. 8 BJ's live tire page was accessible as a shopping page, but the current offer details were not visible in the readable page body. I would quote tires locally before buying, but I would not call a national winner from the public data available this week.

Travel

Costco is the only verified travel lane. Costco Travel lists an Oahu Sheraton Waikiki package with included extras valued at $460, book by July 31, and a Princess Cruises Big 2027 Savings Event with a July 14 book-by date. 7 Costco's Weekly Warehouse Insider also promotes a Norwegian Cruise Line offer with prepaid gratuities and a Digital Costco Shop Card, book by July 20. 8
That is a deadline, not a recommendation. Compare the final cruise fare, taxes, cabin class, and cancellation terms against booking direct before treating the Shop Card as savings.

Gas

BJ's is the only chain with a current national member-price tracker I could use for this scorecard. Its July 14 regular average was $3.603 across 202 BJ's gas stations. AAA's national regular average was $3.859 on the same date. 3 4
The stack matters. BJ's Club+ adds 5 cents off per gallon, the BJ's One cards add 10-15 cents per gallon, and Fuel Saver items can add 10 cents per gallon per marked item. 9 That is why BJ's can beat a pure product-coupon week even when the grocery table is thin. The math only works if BJ's is already on your route; a 20-minute detour burns the win.

Cherry-picker's route

If you hold all three cards, I would shop this week in this order:
  1. Costco first, before July 19. Buy Country Archer beef-stick minis if you use lunchbox snacks, Tyson frozen chicken strips if you want plain freezer protein, and Oikos 30g protein shakes if that is already in your rotation. The Oikos pack is $23.99 after $6 off through July 19. 1 8
  2. Sam's only for targeted July deals. The useful list is Propel, Archer beef sticks if Costco is inconvenient, Samyang ramen, the prepared chicken items, and the Ninja Crispi if you already wanted it. Do not turn the Sam's gap week into a cart full of permanent-price Member's Mark filler. 2
  3. BJ's for gas, then leave. With the July 14 BJ's average running 25.6 cents below AAA's national average, fuel is the cleanest BJ's play. Add the $15 new-member/$1-per-gallon promo only if you are new and can use the 30-day window. 3 4 6
For a one- or two-person household, the actual grab list is short: beef sticks, one freezer protein, one nonperishable household item if you need it, and gas. Skip 36-count candy bars unless you are hosting or splitting the box.
Membership playCurrent mathBreak-even read
Costco ExecutiveCostco Executive is $130 at renewal and earns 2% back on qualified purchases, with a $1,250 annual cap. The upgrade is $65 over Gold Star. <MarkdownCitation index="10" title="Executive RewardsCostco" url="https://www.costco.com/f/-/executive-rewards/" />
Sam's PlusSam's is offering first-year Club for $25 and Plus for $55 through Aug. 1; Plus includes 2% back on qualifying purchases, capped at $750, plus shipping and pickup benefits. 5At the promo spread, Plus costs only $30 more than Club in year one. If you use the benefits, this is the easiest upgrade call of the three.
BJ's Club+ / gas stackBJ's standard new-member offer is $15 in the current promo, with $1/gal off BJ's Gas for 30 days after enrollment. Club+ normally adds 5 cents per gallon and 2% back on most in-club purchases. 6 9New gas-heavy shoppers should test BJ's with the $15/$1-per-gallon path first. Upgrade only if your normal BJ's grocery spend and fill-ups are frequent enough to use Club+ without changing habits.

Next-week preview

Costco's June 15-July 19 coupon book is the cliff. That makes July 20 the reset point: if Costco posts a stronger July 20 book, next week's table should get more normal product matches. Sam's next Instant Savings Book is predicted for July 22-Aug. 16, after the current gap between books. 11
Until then, don't shop like every club is equally hot. This is a deadline week for Costco, a targeted sale week for Sam's, and a gas week for BJ's.
