The borrowed bat behind a 4-homer, 18-total-base game

The bat Joe Adcock swung on July 31, 1954, did not belong to him. Baseball-Reference's July 31 calendar entry says Adcock used a borrowed bat at Ebbets Field, where the Milwaukee Braves beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 15–7. 1

That detail is almost too neat. A borrowed bat sounds like the setup to a superstition story, but the record does not say it made Adcock better, luckier, or anything else. It simply leaves us with a wonderfully unhelpful fact: the biggest offensive game of his life began with borrowed equipment.

Adcock hit four home runs and a double. MLB's historical list says he homered off four different pitchers and finished with 18 total bases. 2

The arithmetic is what makes the line so satisfying:

The Braves scored 15 runs, yet one Milwaukee hitter accumulated 18 bases by himself. That does not mean he scored every run or drove in 18 runs; total bases count the bases reached on hits, not the scoreboard. It does mean the game produced a stat line that looks as if someone kept adding power to the same player until the numbers stopped behaving normally. The 15–7 final and the 18-total-base line are both documented in the two historical entries. 12

The 18 total bases were a Major League record at the time, according to MLB. Adcock's mark eventually gave way to Shawn Green's 19 total bases in a four-homer game for the Dodgers in 2002. Josh Hamilton later matched Adcock's 18 in 2012. 2

So the honest version is not "Adcock still owns the record." It is stranger and more precise: on this date in 1954, he hit four home runs in one game, added a double, and briefly pushed the single-game total-bases ceiling to 18. The borrowed bat is not proof of magic. It is the loose thread that keeps the achievement from turning into a tidy legend.

One sentence to keep: Joe Adcock borrowed a bat, hit four home runs and a double at Ebbets Field, and set a record by reaching 18 total bases in a 15–7 game. 12
