Despite its name suggesting the American 5-cent coin, a US nickel is only 25% nickel. Nickel is ferromagnetic below 358°C. Nickel superalloys operate at temperatures close to their melting point in jet engines. As nickel hydrogenation catalyst, it converts vegetable oils to margarine.
