Rolex Shanghai Masters (ATP 1000): a 25th seed wins the title

Shanghai ran from 7 to 18 October on outdoor hard courts, with $9,415,725 in prize money 3.
The four third-round matches still unplayed at the last cutoff were decided on Monday 12 October. They took out the second and eighth seeds 3.
Zizou Bergs, ranked No. 39, beat second seed Carlos Alcaraz 7-5, 7-6(4) in two hours and three minutes. Bergs broke Alcaraz three times and won 37 of the 47 points behind his first serve 5.
He had served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and been broken. He then took the tie-break from 4-4 with three straight points 5.
Alcaraz's defeat settled the year-end ranking. Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 as ATP Year-End No. 1, the first German to do so 5.
Tommy Paul ended the title defence of Valentin Vacherot, the 2025 champion, 6-4, 6-2 in 85 minutes. Vacherot drops 18 places to No. 32 5.
Eighth seed Arthur Fils lost to Botic van de Zandschulp 7-5, 6-4, and Medvedev beat Svrčina 6-2, 6-3 to complete the round 3.
Two matches ended early. Fourth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime retired in the round of 16 with Casper Ruud leading 5-2, and Arthur Gea retired in his quarterfinal against Davidovich Fokina at 4-1 3.
Gea had knocked out third seed Ben Shelton in the previous round, then beat 13th seed Jakub Menšík 7-6(4), 6-4 in the round of 16 3.
Zverev, the top seed, needed three sets for 19th seed Alexander Bublik in the round of 16, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1). He then beat Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals 3.
Jodar came from a set down in the round of 16 against van de Zandschulp and again in the quarterfinal against Ruud. He beat Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal 3.
Davidovich Fokina's route was the harder one. He saved a match point against Frances Tiafoe in the third round, then came from a set down to beat Hubert Hurkacz 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) in the round of 16 1.
Against Zverev in the semifinal he made 82 per cent of his first serves, broke at the start of the third set, let two match points go at 5-2 and still closed it out 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 4.
The final turned in the second set. Jodar broke in the second game, then again for 5-1, and took the opening set without facing a break point 1.
Davidovich Fokina saved one break point at 4-3, two more at 5-4 and two more at 6-5. He took the tie-break 7-5, broke for 3-2 in the third set and held from there 1.
Davidovich Fokina had lost his first five tour-level finals, including the 2022 Monte-Carlo final to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He has now won his last three, in Mallorca, Chengdu and Shanghai, and is on a 10-match winning run in China 1.
Jodar leaves China ninth in the ATP Live Race to Turin, which ATP describes as just inside the qualification cut for the Nitto ATP Finals 1.

Wuhan Open (WTA 1000): the top two seeds go out in the second round

Wuhan ran from 12 to 18 October on outdoor hard courts, with $4,088,211 in prize money, and it was the last WTA 1000 of the season 68.
The field lost its world No. 1 and its defending champion before the draw was made. Elena Rybakina withdrew with a foot injury, and Coco Gauff pulled out of the title defence 89.
Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, went out in her opening match to Ann Li, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in two hours and 27 minutes 7.
Li led 5-2 in the third set. Sabalenka saved five match points to hold for 5-3 and two more to level at 5-5, and Li converted her tenth with a forehand winner 7.
It was Li's third win over a top-10 opponent and her first over Sabalenka in four meetings. It was also the first time Sabalenka has failed to reach the last four in Wuhan, a tournament she has won three times 7.
Jessica Pegula, the second seed, lost her opening match to Jelena Ostapenko 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 6.
Ostapenko went on to the semifinal, beating 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6(6), 6-1 in the quarterfinals and losing there to Kartal 7-6(9), 7-6(5) 6.
Iga Świątek, seeded seventh, was the highest seed left by the semifinals. She beat Magdalena Frech, Ashlyn Krueger and Li for the loss of 13 games across the three matches 6.
Kartal beat ninth seed Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5, then 15th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-0 and fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 6.
Chwalinska had to come from a set down against Marie Bouzková in the second round. She then beat 10th seed Iva Jović 6-4, 6-1 and Maria Sakkari 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 26.
Her semifinal against Świątek was the first all-Polish semifinal at a WTA event in the Open Era. She had trailed 5-3 in the first set, saved two set points and won its last four games on the way to 7-5, 6-1 2.
The final lasted two hours and 43 minutes. Kartal took the first set and broke for 2-0 in the second; Chwalinska converted her fifth break point of that game to get back on serve, took the set 6-4 and broke for 3-2 in the third 2.
She served out the third set at 5-2, saving three break points in the final game. The win was her first tour-level title 2.
She is the fourth player since 2009 to win her first title at WTA 1000 level, after Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu and Victoria Mboko 2.
She is also the fourth first-time WTA 1000 champion this season, after Karolína Muchová in Doha, Marta Kostyuk in Madrid and Zheng Qinwen in Beijing 2.
She is the first left-hander to win a WTA 1000 since Petra Kvitová in Miami in 2023, and the third Polish player to win one, after Agnieszka Radwańska and Świątek 2.
She began the season around No. 140 with a goal of reaching the top 100, and she reached the Roland Garros final in the spring 2.
