NBA Daily Digest: Walsh extension, Crawford returns, LeBron waits
Boston extended Jordan Walsh, Houston brought back Isaiah Crawford, and LeBron James remained unsigned as the NBA calendar moved into its quiet offseason stretch.
No games, no series movement
The NBA schedule stayed empty across the checked window. ESPN listed no games on either July 22 or July 23, so there are no new finals, playoff-series changes or game-day availability decisions to add. 12
The quiet is expected after the Las Vegas Summer League ended July 19. The next confirmed NBA game dates on the league calendar are the Oct. 9 and 11 preseason games in Macao. 3
Boston extends Walsh as transactions stay small
The largest new reported contract was Boston Celtics forward Jordan Walsh's three-year, $15 million extension. ESPN reported the agreement as the Celtics continued filling out a roster that lost Jaylen Brown this offseason. 4
Houston also re-signed Rockets forward Isaiah Crawford after his productive Summer League run. The financial terms were not disclosed; a team source told Rockets Wire that the deal is not guaranteed, while Crawford still has remaining two-way eligibility. 5
ESPN's transaction feed listed these additional July 22 moves:
| Team | Player and move | Status reported |
|---|---|---|
| San Antonio Spurs | Guard David Jones Garcia re-signed | Two-way contract 6 |
| Indiana Pacers | Forward Jalen Slawson re-signed | Two-way contract 6 |
| Dallas Mavericks | Center Moussa Cisse signed | Contract type not listed 6 |
| Atlanta Hawks | Forward Jalen Wilson signed | Two-way contract 6 |
This is roster maintenance rather than another headline trade, but it gives several teams a little more certainty before training camp.
The availability watch is about returns
With no game-day injury report, the most useful health updates are longer-range return questions rather than new scratch lists. A July 23 review of all 30 teams points to three situations that could shape the next season:
- Houston is counting on guard Fred VanVleet's return from a torn right ACL. No return date was given in the report.
- Golden State still does not have a clear timetable for guard Jimmy Butler III, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in February.
- Dallas expects guard Kyrie Irving back after a season-long absence caused by a torn left ACL, though the report also cautions that a full return to his pre-injury form is not automatic.
These are availability contexts, not new medical clearances. 7
LeBron's decision remains the unresolved headline
LeBron James, the former Los Angeles Lakers forward and current unrestricted free agent, still had not announced his next team in the latest July 23 update. USA TODAY described the process as being on Day 24 and reported that James was no longer courting teams because he had the information needed to choose. The same update identified the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers as the main possibilities, while offering no public timetable for a decision. 9
That keeps the market in a holding pattern. The Heat's accidental introductory-press-conference link was already clarified as a mistake in the previous digest; the newer information is that the decision itself remains open, even after the teams made their pitches.
Next dates to put on the calendar
| Date | Event | Venue or coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Aug. 14-15 | Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026 Enshrinement Weekend | Broadcast not listed on the NBA key-dates page 3 |
| Oct. 9 and 11 | NBA China Games: Dallas Mavericks vs. Houston Rockets | The Venetian Arena, Macao; specific broadcaster not listed 10 |
| Oct. 30 | Emirates NBA Cup group play begins | Prime Video 3 |
The immediate watch is therefore off the court: whether the reported Walsh and Crawford deals become part of the final official transaction record, whether the three long-term injury returns gain clearer timetables, and when James finally closes the league's last major free-agent question.
