Chess digest, Aug. 15–19: Carlsen repeats, Pragg catches So, French titles settle

The previous issue left three major questions open: who would take the Esports World Cup, whether Wesley So could hold Saint Louis, and which players would leave Vichy with French titles. Two of those answers are now settled. Carlsen won again in Paris, and Bacrot and Milliet finished first in France. Saint Louis still has one round to run, but the shape of both races has changed.

The Sinquefield Cup and Cairns Cup have reached their final rounds. The important shift is at the top: Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu caught Wesley So on 5/8 in the open event, while Tan Zhongyi moved to 6.5/8 and needs only a draw to win the women's event. 1

So drew Sam Sevian in round eight, his fifth consecutive draw after wins in rounds two and three. Pragg beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with Black in 27 moves, and Vincent Keymer and Javokhir Sindarov also won. That leaves So and Pragg tied on 5/8, with Keymer and Sindarov on 4.5/8. Pragg is already guaranteed a place in the Grand Chess Tour Finals; the event itself is the tour’s last leg and carries a $475,000 prize fund. 1

Sindarov’s rise is the round-eight subplot. Three days earlier, the world championship challenger was third from last. Wins over Keymer and Jorden van Foreest have put him back in the title fight, although he must beat So with Black in the last round to have a realistic chance. 1

The late swing began in round six, when Anish Giri scored the only win of the day against Van Foreest. In round seven, Sindarov produced the event’s only decisive result by beating Keymer, while So drew Giri and stayed on 4.5/7. 23

Tan has won five games and drawn three. Her round-eight win over Bibisara Assaubayeva left her a point ahead of 16-year-old Alice Lee, who beat Vaishali Rameshbabu and still has a path to the title. Lee also needs a draw against Carissa Yip to secure her first grandmaster norm. The Cairns Cup has a $250,000 prize fund. 1

Lee’s challenge took shape in round six, when she beat Koneru Humpy to move into clear second. Tan then survived a difficult position against Divya Deshmukh in round seven before beating Assaubayeva in the next round. The result is a two-player finish rather than the crowded race that opened the event. 23

Magnus Carlsen beat 19-year-old Denis Lazavik two sets to zero, winning each set 3–1. Carlsen completed the Paris playoffs without losing a game. The champion takes $250,000, Lazavik gets $190,000, and Hikaru Nakamura finished third for $145,000 from a chess prize fund of $1.5 million. 4

The format made the final a test of adjustment rather than a single blitz sprint. Each set contained four games, and Lazavik had to win on demand after Carlsen took the first set. The 19-year-old had also reached the final without a playoff loss, but one late blunder in the first game gave Carlsen the lead he never gave back. 4

Étienne Bacrot won the open French Championship for his ninth title, beating Maxime Lagarde 2–0 in the final after two drawn classical games and a successful tiebreak phase. The title came in Vichy, the same city where Bacrot won his second French title in 2000 at age 17. 5

Sophie Milliet won the women’s championship for the seventh time, matching Almira Skripchenko’s record. Milliet and Pauline Guichard drew both classical games, then Milliet won the tiebreak phase. Her previous title was in 2017. 6

The two titles close the French Championship story that was still unresolved in the previous issue. Bacrot’s final route included two drawn classical games against Laurent Fressinet before a tiebreak win in the semifinal; Milliet beat Maisuradze, Schippke, former champion Natacha Iglesias, and Guichard in her knockout route. 56

Tuan Minh Le won the August 18 Titled Tuesday with 9.5/11, edging Parham Maghsoodloo and Arjun Erigaisi on tiebreaks. Le recovered from a first-round loss by winning nine games in a row, including two wins on time from equal positions. It was his first Titled Tuesday win of 2026 and the 12th of his career. 7
