24,302 postings at a $24 hour, and three skills that pay $33 to $35

This week's Upwork posting count held at double its September level while the average advertised hour stayed at $24, and the issue vets the three skills whose medians clear it — management consulting, database administration and data analysis — each with an honest 90-day path, three-tier pricing, client-screening red flags and adaptable gig copy.

The skill market this week

Two weekly numbers about this market disagree, and the gap between them is where the signal sits.
SnipeWork scans public Upwork job posts through Upwork's own API and archives every week permanently. For the week of 5–11 October 2026 it counted 24,302 posts, up 1.3% on the week before 1.
The week before, 28 September–4 October, it counted 23,983 — up 65.5% on the 14,495 logged for 21–27 September 2. Last issue read that jump as a change in what the scanner covers, because all twelve categories rose by roughly the same factor. That reading has a second week behind it: 28 September–4 October is archived and frozen at 23,983, and the week after came in at 24,302 3.
Rates stayed flat through all of it. Across those 24,302 posts the average advertised hour is $24, unchanged for a third week 1. Three of twelve categories average above $30 — Legal $57, IT & Networking $34, Data Science & Analytics $32 — and Admin Support and Customer Service both average $14.
Fiverr's last filed quarter shows the same split from the other side: marketplace revenue down 15.5% year on year and active buyers down 21.9%, while annual spend per buyer rose 15.6% to $368 and projects above $1,000 grew 13%. Fewer buyers, bigger jobs, more specialisation 4.
Freelancers posting this week describe something else. On r/Upwork a seller claiming close to $1M earned and the Expert-Vetted badge wrote that he is moving his business off the platform 5. A reply from another freelancer reporting half a million earned, 100% job success and the same badge reads: "For months, it's been crickets."
A post count measures listings, and a client hires a freelancer; the two drift apart. What both sides agree on is narrower: the work paying the market average is crowded, and the work clearing $30 is specific.
Two things the filter needs are published nowhere. No gig platform releases skill-level demand growth over a 30-day window, so no growth percentage can be verified here, and Fiverr publishes no skill-level hourly median 6. Each pick therefore carries measured 30-day posting volume, and every rate is an Upwork-side median from live job posts.
The three are ranked by median advertised hourly rate, because that is what the filter turns on.

1. Management Consulting & Analysis

Demand. 515 posts in the 30 days to 12 October asked for this work, 78% of them from clients whose payment method Upwork had verified 7. That is a steady stream rather than a surge. The nearest growth figure is a dated study by the same publisher, over the 90 days to mid-June 2026, which measured corporate-finance postings up 67.6% inside its own window 10. An older window, not this month.
Rate reality. The median is $35 an hour, the floor $13, the top decile $88 — the widest spread of the three 7. A fifth of hourly posts sit between $40 and $60, and about one in twelve clears $100. Featured and enterprise clients pay an average $73 an hour here against $48 from ordinary postings, a 52% gap.
Learning path. The one pick you cannot start from zero. It repackages expertise you already have, so 90 days buy packaging, not knowledge.
  • 3 days. Pick the one decision your day job taught you to make well. Write a two-page brief on a real company in that space, with one recommendation and the numbers behind it. Learn the names buyers search for: market entry analysis, pricing teardown, operations diagnostic, go-to-market plan.
  • 4 weeks. Build three more briefs you can show publicly, and write a one-page scoping questionnaire so a first call ends with a price.
  • 12 weeks. Win two paid engagements, one at $35 an hour or above. Turn your best brief into a fixed-price diagnostic you can repeat in two weeks. Move one client onto a retainer.
Pricing template. Starter fixed gig at $250: one decision, five working days, a written brief plus a 45-minute walkthrough. Mid-tier package at $1,500–$1,800: the same question carried through to a model or a 90-day plan over three to four weeks. Monthly retainer at $1,800–$2,500: two working sessions a month and async review, about ten hours.
Top 3 client-screening red flags. A buyer who wants a call before putting the problem in writing; a freelancer on r/freelance walked away from a well-paid lead for exactly that 11. A free "sample strategy", or a proposal detailed enough to execute without you — an agency owner watched a client take a two-day proposal to a cheaper freelancer 12. And success-fee pricing with no floor, where payment depends on a raise closing.
I will write you a clear decision brief on one business question
Most owners already know their problem. They need someone outside the business to size it, price it, and put the options on one page.
Here is what I do. You give me one decision — a price change, a new market, a supplier switch, a process that keeps breaking — and I give you a written brief in five working days. The brief covers what the numbers say, the realistic options, what each one costs you, and which one I would take if it were my business. You get a PDF and a 45-minute call to walk through it.
What I need from you to start: the question in one paragraph, whatever data you already have (a spreadsheet, an export, last year's invoices — messy is fine), and 30 minutes on a call.
What I will not do: promise a number I cannot support, or tell you what you want to hear. If your data will not answer the question, the brief says so and says what would.
Who this suits: businesses between roughly $200k and $10m in revenue, and founders deciding something expensive who want a second read before they commit.
Typical turnaround is five working days, with 48-hour rush available for a fee. Two rounds of comments are included; further rounds are billed hourly.
I have run this work inside operating businesses, so the brief is written in the language your team already uses.
Message me with your question before ordering, so I can tell you honestly whether it is the kind of problem I can help with.
Adjacent specialization. Financial Planning is the next rung inside Accounting & Consulting, at a $43 median on the same tracker — about $8 an hour above this pick 13.

2. Database Management & Administration

Demand. The thinnest sample of the three: 51 posts in 30 days, 78% of them from payment-verified clients 8. Treat the rate below as indicative rather than settled. Database work is often bought inside a larger infrastructure engagement, which helps explain the quiet tag.
Rate reality. Median $34 an hour, floor $15, top decile $77, and the rate slipped 2.9% against the prior 30 days 8. Just over half of hourly posts land between $25 and $60. A dated study by the same publisher, over the 90 days to 13 June 2026, priced database and SQL engineering at $40 for Microsoft SQL Server and $36.25 for SQL across 192 postings, and found the real money on the fixed-price side, where database design carried a $550 median project budget 14.
Learning path. A day job plus evenings is enough, because the work is small and checkable.
  • 3 days. Install PostgreSQL locally and restore a sample database. Run EXPLAIN ANALYZE on two slow queries, add one index, and watch the plan change. That single loop is most of the job.
  • 4 weeks. Learn backups and restores by doing them: dump a database, restore it to a fresh instance, and time it. Add roles and permissions, connection pooling, and one migration rehearsed on a copy.
  • 12 weeks. Tune a table with production-sized data, document a backup and restore procedure another person could follow at 3am, and deliver one paid health check.
Pricing template. Starter fixed gig at $300: a written health check covering backups, indexes, slow queries and configuration, with the fixes ranked. Mid-tier package at $1,500–$3,000: the changes made on a copy, tested, then applied in an agreed window. Monthly retainer at $600–$1,200: backup verification, capacity monitoring, and a guaranteed response on restore requests.
Top 3 client-screening red flags. A client who wants you working live on production with no tested backup and no maintenance window. "Fix our database" with no schema, no volume and no error text, which cannot be scoped and will not end. And a request to hand over credentials before anything is agreed in writing.
I will audit your PostgreSQL or MySQL database and fix the slow parts
Your app got slow, or your backups never got tested, and nobody on the team owns the database. I do.
Three packages, all fixed price, all delivered with a written report.
Health check — $300. I look at your schema, indexes, slowest queries, backup setup and connection configuration. You get a five-page report: what is fine, what is a risk, and the changes I would make, in priority order. Nothing is changed in your database in this package.
Tuning and fixes — from $1,500. Everything in the health check, plus I make the changes on a copy, test them, and apply them in an agreed maintenance window. That usually means adding missing indexes, rewriting the worst queries, fixing the connection pool, and documenting the backup and restore procedure so the next person can follow it.
Monthly care — from $600 a month. Backup verification, index and disk-growth monitoring, and a guaranteed response on restore requests. For teams that want someone accountable rather than a ticket queue.
What I need to start: read access to a copy of the database, the schema, and one slow query.
What I will not do: work directly on a production database with no tested backup, or take credentials before we have agreed a scope in writing.
I work with PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQL Server, on Linux and on managed cloud instances. The report is in plain English. Message me with your engine, your size and your symptom before ordering.
Adjacent specialization. Inside this skill the next step is a billing model rather than an hourly rung: hourly medians in the neighbourhood top out near $40, while database design projects carried a $550 median budget in the June study's window 14. Selling the design outcome pays more than selling the repair.

3. Data Analysis & Testing

Demand. 740 posts in 30 days, 72% payment-verified, and the rate up 1.5% on the prior 30 days — the healthiest sample of the three 9. It is also the most crowded: Python alone is attached to 153 of the 612 Data Science & Analytics posts logged in the seven days to 12 October 15. What sells is the question you can answer.
Rate reality. Median $33 an hour, floor $10, top decile $55 9. Half of hourly posts land between $25 and $60, and the ceiling is the lowest of the three. Featured and enterprise clients pay an average $41 an hour against $32 from ordinary postings, a 28% gap.
Learning path. This is the pick that genuinely starts from zero, and the fastest of the three to a first invoice.
  • 3 days. Write SQL joins, filters and aggregates without looking them up. Clean one messy public dataset end to end and write five sentences on what it shows. Those two things cover most first jobs.
  • 4 weeks. Build a ten-line briefing habit: question, data, method, finding, caveat. Rebuild one report as a dashboard a non-analyst can refresh.
  • 12 weeks. Deliver two paid analyses, one on a dataset you have never seen. Turn your best one into a repeatable template. Move a recurring question onto a monthly arrangement.
Pricing template. Starter fixed gig at $250: one question, one dataset, a written answer with the working file, five working days. Mid-tier package at $900–$1,500: the recurring question turned into a dashboard you can refresh, with a walkthrough and documentation. Monthly retainer at $800–$1,500: one analysis a month plus a standing review call.
Top 3 client-screening red flags. A client who wants "insights" with no question and no decision attached, which guarantees revision rounds that never converge. A full analysis requested as a free trial; r/Upwork hosted that exact offer this week, a client asking for five free hours in exchange for a review 16. And a brief that asks you to scrape personal data or customer records without a lawful basis for holding them.
I will answer one business question from your own data, in a written analysis
You have data and a decision to make. I turn the first into a one-page answer for the second.
Bring me a question — is this price working, which customers actually renew, did the campaign do anything — and the data you already have: exports, spreadsheets, a database, a folder of CSVs. I clean it, check what it can and cannot support, run the analysis, and write it up. You get the working file, a short written answer with the numbers behind it, and a call to go through it.
Single question — $250. One question, one dataset, five working days. Written answer, charts and the working notebook.
Dashboard — from $900. A recurring question turned into a report you can refresh yourself, built in Power BI, Looker Studio, or a spreadsheet if that is what your team will actually open. Includes a walkthrough session and written documentation.
Monthly analysis — from $800 a month. One analysis a month, plus a standing call to review what the numbers are doing.
What I need from you to start: your question in writing, and the data or access to it.
What I will not do: hand you a chart with no answer, or pretend a sample of forty rows can support a claim about your whole market.
I work in SQL, Python and spreadsheets, and I write for people who do not read statistics. If your data cannot answer the question, the write-up says so.
Message me with your question before ordering.
Adjacent specialization. AI & Machine Learning is the neighbouring lane on the same tracker: a $30 median and a $58 top decile across 1,409 posts 9. The middle sits three dollars below this pick and the ceiling three dollars above it, across nearly twice the postings — a bigger market with a higher top.

How to choose

Three questions separate these picks faster than any rate table.
What do you already know that someone would pay to have explained? Management Consulting & Analysis is the only pick that needs an answer on day one, because it sells judgement you already have.
Can you show a piece of work three weeks from now? Data Analysis & Testing gets you to a first deliverable fastest, and its 740 monthly posts mean more shots at a first client.
Do you want to sell hours or an outcome? Database Management & Administration has the thinnest stream of posted work and the best fixed-price economics, so it rewards a packaged offer over an open hourly listing.
Each pick's adjacent rung is the next real one, and the step is single digits an hour: $8 up in consulting, $6 up in databases, a higher ceiling across twice the market in analysis. If none of the three fits what you already do, keep the 90 days and spend them on the first question.
