Match Report: Argentina 3-0 Algeria — Messi turns the opener into a record night
Lionel Messi scored all three goals as Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 in Kansas City. The hat trick tied Miroslav Klose's men's World Cup scoring record and killed any early-tournament doubt about Messi's fitness.
The short version
Messi did not ease into 2026. He took Algeria apart 3-0 at Arrowhead Stadium, scoring all three Argentina goals and matching Miroslav Klose's men's World Cup record of 16. It was Messi's first World Cup hat trick, his 11th for Argentina, his 200th cap, and the first match of his record sixth World Cup. 1
At 38, he also became the oldest player to score three in a World Cup match. 1 That is not a warmup act. That is Argentina telling the field the old script still works.
Timeline
- Opening minutes: Messi made it 1-0 from Rodrigo De Paul's feed, then wiped away tears with his jersey. 2
- Early second half: he punished a rebound for 2-0, killing the part of the night where Algeria could pretend the match was still live. 2
- Late second half: he struck again, completed the hat trick, and left to a standing ovation from a crowd of 69,045. 2
Stats that matter
Messi has now scored in five straight World Cup matches, and in five editions of the tournament. 2 ESPN also has him passing Pele for the most World Cup goal contributions, with 24: 16 goals and 8 assists. 3
One-line verdict: Algeria lost to a team, yes, but mainly to a man who still makes a 104-match tournament feel like it has a main character.
