Your phone is not a sponge: 7 free fixes for cleaner tech
Seven free, device-safe fixes for cleaning phones, cases, keyboards, ports, and screens without spraying liquid into your tech.
A clean device routine starts with one rule: keep liquid under control. Power down first, remove dry dust before wiping, and put any moisture on the cloth rather than on the phone, keyboard, or screen. Good Housekeeping's guidance for phones, laptops, headphones, televisions, and controllers follows that order. 1
The seven fixes below use things you may already own: a clean microfiber cloth, water, mild soap, and a soft brush. A disinfecting wipe or electronics wipe is optional for a device whose care instructions allow it.
1. Start with a powerless, case-free device
Cleaning is easier when the device is off and its openings are visible. Good Housekeeping starts its phone, laptop, headphone, television, and controller guidance by powering down or unplugging, while its phone routine also removes the case first. 12
Steps
- Save your work, shut down the device, and unplug its charger and accessories.
- Remove a phone case, headphone ear tips, or remote batteries when the part is designed to come off.
- Put the device on a dry, stable surface.
- Keep the case and removable parts beside the device until they can be cleaned and dried separately.
Why it works: Powering down makes dust and streaks easier to see and keeps cleaning liquid away from an active device. Removing the case exposes grime that a wipe cannot reach while the case is attached.
Avoid this mistake: Do not clean a plugged-in device or open a sealed device to reach hidden dust. If the maker's care instructions set a different boundary, follow those instructions first.
2. Dry-wipe the phone before adding moisture
A clean microfiber cloth can lift fingerprints, grease, and surface soil from a phone. Good Housekeeping explains that the cloth's fibers trap dirt and that friction physically removes material from the glass; this cleaning step reduces grime without claiming to disinfect the phone. 2
Steps
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
- Wipe the screen, back, sides, and case-free edges with light pressure.
- Fold the cloth to expose a clean section as it picks up grease.
- Check the screen under a bright light before deciding whether a damp wipe is needed.
Why it works: Dry friction lifts the film that causes most fingerprints and smudges. The first pass also removes loose soil before any moisture can turn it into a smear.
Avoid this mistake: Do not use a rough cloth, paper towel, or a cloth that already holds grit. A dry wipe removes surface soil; it is not a substitute for a device-approved disinfecting step.
3. Put moisture on the cloth, never on the device
Phone and laptop guidance from Good Housekeeping calls for a cloth that is lightly dampened with water or an appropriate electronics-cleaning solution. Its television guidance is more conservative: modern screens should start with dry cleaning, and a pre-moistened electronics wipe can handle a stubborn spot. Across both cases, direct spraying is the mistake to avoid. 14
Steps
- Check the device maker's cleaning instructions before choosing a liquid.
- For a phone or laptop, lightly dampen the cloth or use a suitable pre-moistened electronics wipe.
- Wring out an excessively wet wipe, then wipe the exterior while staying away from ports, speakers, and seams.
- For a modern TV or monitor, try a dry microfiber cloth first; use a suitable electronics wipe only for a stubborn mark.
- Leave the device open and untouched until the surface is fully dry.
Why it works: A cloth carries a small, controlled amount of moisture. Direct spray and an oversaturated wipe can move liquid toward openings, inner components, and screen coatings.
Avoid this mistake: Keep vinegar, bleach, bathroom cleaner, metal cleaner, abrasive scrubbers, and household glass cleaner away from electronic screens. Good Housekeeping warns that vinegar's acidity can damage anti-glare coatings and make touchscreens less responsive. Its television guidance also says to avoid ammonia, alcohol, and acetone on modern TV screens. 245
4. Wash the phone case on its own
A case travels through the same pockets, bags, tables, and hands as the phone. Good Housekeeping recommends washing cases in warm, soapy water and drying them fully before reattaching them; fabric and leather accessories need their own care instructions. 12
Steps
- Remove the case and identify whether it is hard plastic, rubber-like, fabric, or leather.
- For a water-safe hard case, wash the case separately with warm water and mild soap.
- Rinse away soap and shake off trapped water around buttons and cutouts.
- Dry the case inside and out, then leave it out until no moisture remains.
- Reattach it only after the phone and case are both dry.
Why it works: Separate cleaning lets you wash the part that surrounds the phone without sending water toward the phone's ports and speakers.
Avoid this mistake: Do not soak or bleach a fabric or leather case unless its care instructions explicitly allow it. Do not put a damp case back on a dry phone; the trapped moisture defeats the rest of the routine.
5. Brush crumbs and lint out of crevices while everything is dry
Small openings collect lint and crumbs. Good Housekeeping recommends a dry cotton bud for phone crevices and a soft brush for laptop keys, speaker grilles, vents, ports, and seams. The same guidance warns against using a vacuum on fragile speaker cones. 1
Steps
- Confirm that the device is powered down and unplugged.
- Use a dry, soft brush to sweep dust away from speaker grilles, vents, seams, and the outside lip of ports.
- Use a dry cotton bud around shallow crevices where lint is visible.
- Tilt the device so loosened debris falls away from the openings.
- Finish with the dry microfiber cloth from fix 2.
Why it works: Dry brushing lifts loose debris without adding liquid to a port or speaker grille. Clearing dry crumbs before wiping also keeps the cloth from dragging them across the surface.
Avoid this mistake: Do not poke a port with a pin, knife, or other sharp object. Do not force debris deeper, use uncontrolled air pressure, or vacuum a speaker cone. Stop when debris is lodged below the visible opening and use the maker's service guidance.
6. Give a keyboard a dry pass and a light wipe
Keyboard cleaning works best in two stages. Good Housekeeping recommends shutting down and unplugging first, turning a laptop upside down for a gentle shake, using a soft brush for stubborn debris, and then wiping keys and the touchpad with a lightly damp cloth. 1
Steps
- Shut down the laptop or computer and unplug it.
- Turn a laptop upside down and give it a gentle shake over a clear surface.
- Sweep remaining crumbs from between the keys with a soft, dry brush.
- Wipe the keys and touchpad with a microfiber cloth that is only lightly damp.
- Leave the keyboard open until the surface is dry before reconnecting power.
Why it works: The dry pass removes loose crumbs before the damp pass reaches fingerprints and sticky spots. Separating those jobs reduces the chance of turning crumbs into wet grit between the keys.
Avoid this mistake: Never spray liquid directly onto the keyboard or soak the cloth. Do not use enough pressure to bend keys or drive debris farther inside.
7. Clean a large screen in two passes
A large screen shows every streak when it is on, so turn it off before cleaning. Good Housekeeping recommends a soft, dry microfiber cloth for modern TV screens, a suitable pre-moistened electronics wipe for stubborn spots, and two passes in different directions. It also warns against direct spray, rough cloths, paper towels, and oily pre-treated dusting cloths. 4
Steps
- Turn off the TV or monitor and let the screen cool if it was running.
- Wipe the entire screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth in one direction.
- Spot-clean remaining marks with a suitable pre-moistened electronics wipe, if the maker allows it.
- Wipe the screen a second time in the opposite direction.
- Fold or flip the cloth often so you are not moving collected dust back across the panel.
Why it works: A dark screen makes streaks easier to see. Two light passes cover the panel in both directions while a folded cloth keeps collected dust from spreading.
Avoid this mistake: Never spray cleaner directly on the screen. Avoid paper towels, rough fabric, pre-treated furniture dusters, ammonia, alcohol, and acetone on modern screens. Check the TV or monitor manual when the display type or coating is unclear. 4
The routine to keep
- When the phone looks greasy: start with a dry microfiber pass; add a device-approved wipe only when the dry pass leaves a mark. 2
- Once a week: dust the keyboard and large screen, then clean the phone case separately. Good Housekeeping recommends weekly laptop wipe-downs and weekly TV-screen cleaning. 14
- Every time: power down first, brush dry debris away, put moisture on the cloth, avoid openings, and let every part dry before reconnecting it.
The cheapest device-cleaning upgrade is a repeatable order: off, dry, lightly damp, dry again. That sequence keeps a phone, keyboard, case, and screen easier to use without turning a cleaning session into a liquid-damage risk.
