Starship Scrubbed, Nicki at the Launch Pad, Trump's IRS Deal, and Congress Chickens Out — May 22 Briefing
5 viral angles for your Friday morning: SpaceX scrubs Starship V3 30 seconds from launch (retry today at 5:30 CT) while Nicki Minaj watches live at Starbase; House Republicans cancel their own Iran war vote because they'd lose; Trump's DOJ quietly grants him permanent IRS audit immunity on a $100M bill, drawing McConnell's public fury; xAI ships Grok 4.3 at $1.25/million tokens the same week OpenAI disproves an 80-year-old geometry conjecture; and the DNC's 192-page 2024 autopsy doesn't mention Gaza once.
SpaceX Scrubbed, Nicki at Starbase, Trump's IRS Deal, and Congress Can't Find Its Spine — May 22 Briefing
Good morning. It's Friday. Here are the 5 stories you need to hit your audience before they clock in.
🚀 Topic 1 — Starship V3 scrubbed 30 seconds from liftoff (and Nicki Minaj watched it happen)
SpaceX's Starship Flight 12 — debut of Version 3 with a payload tripled to 100 metric tons — was aborted last night, May 21, with about 30 seconds left on the clock. The culprit: a hydraulic pin holding the launch tower arm failed to retract. Musk posted on X that if the pin can be fixed, the next attempt is scheduled for today, Friday May 22, at 5:30 p.m. CT 1.
Meanwhile, the IPO filings value SpaceX at up to $2 trillion — the largest in history — with analysts noting the S-1 embeds xAI and reveals SpaceX described itself as "the most advanced launch system ever developed." 2
The kicker: Nicki Minaj was physically at Starbase wearing a Starship t-shirt when the scrub happened. She appeared live on the SpaceX webcast and gave Musk a public shoutout: "Major shoutout to Elon. Thank you for everything." 3
Musk's own post got 19M views within hours 4.

Virality angle: The scrub + Nicki cameo is a perfect meme collision. The angle that prints: "Nicki Minaj flew to Texas to watch a rocket NOT launch — and still did a better PR job for SpaceX than a $50M marketing budget." Hot take version: "SpaceX scrubbing Flight 12 with Nicki Minaj in the crowd is the most 2026 thing that has ever happened."
Hook: "SpaceX scrubbed Starship V3 30 seconds from launch last night because of a hydraulic pin. Nicki Minaj watched it happen live and still said 'thank you for everything' to Elon. The rocket was less ready than she was."
Format: Meme/commentary combo. Screenshot Musk's tweet + Nicki on the livestream side by side. Quote-tweet city.
🏛️ Topic 2 — House Republicans couldn't vote on their own Iran war and fled the building
House GOP leadership canceled a scheduled War Powers vote Thursday after it became clear they didn't have the votes to kill the resolution — which would have forced Trump to either get Congressional authorization for the Iran conflict or end it within 60 days 5. NPR confirmed Republicans then left Capitol Hill early to avoid going on record 6.
The constitutional framing: under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, the president must wind down military hostilities within 60 days without Congressional approval. Trump has been running the Iran war for months. The bipartisan resolution had enough support to pass — which is exactly why leadership pulled it.
Democrats called it "cowardly." Rep. Jim McGovern went viral posting: "They don't have the guts to end a war that's costing us billions."
Virality angle: The Republican base is fracturing on Iran. The question that sparks a debate flood: "If Congress refuses to even VOTE on whether to end a war, who's actually running the country?"
Hook: "House Republicans canceled a vote to limit Trump's Iran war last night — not because they were against it, but because they were afraid they'd WIN. Hiding from your own bill is a new political strategy I guess."
Format: Hot take/poll. Post: "Should Congress be required to vote on every military conflict?" Watch the replies.
💰 Topic 3 — Trump's DOJ secretly gave the president permanent IRS audit immunity
The DOJ's anti-weaponization fund — already controversial for funneling $1.77B+ to MAGA-adjacent figures — now contains a provision giving Trump and his family permanent immunity from IRS audits, covering all tax returns filed before and after he took office 7. The New York Times reported that Trump sat on a potential $100 million IRS bill that this deal quietly eliminates 8.
McConnell called the broader DOJ fund "utterly stupid, morally wrong" after a Blanche meeting Thursday 9. The Senate GOP defection is now confirmed — the fund's passage is in serious doubt.
Meanwhile, Trump's personal wealth is up 165% in 18 months, per a Times investigation. That number keeps circulating on X.

Virality angle: This is the rare story where right and left are both furious — McConnell vs. Trump is catnip for engagement. The most quotable framing: "The man who said he'd drain the swamp just made himself permanently immune from the IRS. Lock in."
Hook: "Trump's DOJ quietly gave Trump permanent IRS audit immunity as part of a $1.8B fund. McConnell called it 'utterly stupid and morally wrong.' That's the most useful thing McConnell has said in a decade."
Format: Commentary thread. Lead with the immunity fact, pivot to McConnell quote, close with the 165% wealth stat. Three tweets, massive reach.
🤖 Topic 4 — xAI ships Grok 4.3 aggressively cheaper as the AI price war hits enterprise
xAI released Grok 4.3 this week via the API, pricing at $1.25 per million tokens — cheaper than several competing frontier models — with a 1 million token context window, native video input, and the ability to generate slides and spreadsheets 10. Musk posted "Grok progress" Thursday morning, racking up 1M views in hours 11.
OpenAI also surfaced this week: the company's models apparently disproved an 80-year-old geometry conjecture by Paul Erdős using mathematical reasoning — a story generating significant AI-watcher engagement 12.
The market positioning context: GPT-5 launched earlier in May, Grok 4.3 shipped the same week. The enterprise AI price war is now visibly compressing token costs below $2/million across the tier-1 players.

Virality angle: The Erdős conjecture story is the breakout education hook this week. "An 80-year-old math problem just got disproved by an AI. Your kids are going to grow up in a world where AI does most of math research. What do you think about that?" — pure debate starter.
Hook: "xAI just dropped Grok 4.3 at $1.25 per million tokens with 1M context window, the same week OpenAI's model disproved an 80-year-old geometry conjecture. The AI price war is compressing to basically free and the models are breaking century-old math. Normal week."
Format: Hot take or explainer thread. The Erdős angle especially plays to the quote-tweet crowd — it sounds outrageous but it's real.
📋 Topic 5 — Democrats published their 2024 autopsy and it doesn't mention Gaza once
The DNC released its long-delayed, 192-page "autopsy" of Kamala Harris's 2024 loss on Thursday — after DNC chair Ken Martin initially tried to bury it 13. The report says Biden's team "failed Kamala Harris" and that Harris didn't sufficiently separate from Biden 14.
The absence of any mention of Gaza or Israel in 192 pages is already a viral talking point, with The Intercept confirming the omission 15. Martin is facing calls to resign from within the party.
Virality angle: The Gaza omission is the single most combustible hook in this story — it's binary, visceral, and will explode comment sections on both sides. Contrarian angle: "A 192-page Democratic Party post-mortem doesn't mention Gaza. Either they think it didn't matter or they think mentioning it is worse than not mentioning it. Both options are bad."
Hook: "Democrats released their 2024 post-mortem today. 192 pages. Zero mentions of Gaza. The DNC chair tried to suppress the report, then apologized, then published it anyway. The Party of accountability strikes again."
Format: Commentary + poll. "Did the DNC autopsy leaving out Gaza show: A) They learned nothing, or B) They think the base moved on?" Every Democrat you know will reply.
