The Mark Kelly Jersey Fight

Mark Kelly's Mexico jersey became a loyalty test on X after he posted photos from a Tucson World Cup watch party while Mexico played England. His post, published on July 6 at 02:02 UTC, said: "Lots of people out in Tucson to watch Mexico take on England. Tucson and La Rosa sure know how to do the World Cup!" 1

The backlash took off when conservative sports and political accounts framed the jersey as a public choice against Team USA. Clay Travis asked why U.S. politicians would wear "jerseys from another country" while the U.S. was still in the tournament, and Nick Kayal called it "a total violation." 23

The basic dispute was narrow: a senator wore a Mexico shirt at a local watch party after England beat Mexico 3-2, and X turned it into an argument over patriotism, immigration, and partisan signaling. The National Desk, Daily Caller, Fox/OutKick, and New York Post all published July 6 writeups of the backlash. 4567

Defenders pushed back on the traitor framing, arguing that wearing a Mexico jersey to watch a soccer match did not erase Kelly's military service or mean he rejected the United States. 8
